From September, 1972... A Super-8mm reel of film, almost 400 feet worth. A lot of 'wasted' footage of Butchart Gardens, a little of Montana, some Trees of Mystery... ...and someone's footage of a ferry ride on the Queen of Prince Rupert. ...and footage of Swartz Bay terminal. ...and a shot of the bow of the Mayne Queen. ...and a shot of the auto deck of a BC boat, most likely an 'S' class. ...and a nice shot of a stretched 'V' that will have to be converted to video to see if we can pick off a few options (the Nanaimo wasn't stretched until after 1974, so that's out ). ...and a nice shot of the Pender Queen underway. I'll have it converted to DVD (hopefully soon) and between Evergreenfleet and myself we'll get some dramatic stills up. And that's just the tip of the iceberg for what I have in the film vault. ;D (I am such a tease!)

This is great news - Thank you in-advance for the effort it sounds like you fellas intend to put into this project. From September, 1972... A Super-8mm reel of film, ... ...and a shot of the auto deck of a BC boat, most likely an 'S' class. About 20 years too early to be a 'Spirit' Class - I'm trying to think of what 'S' you're referring to... Sechelt, Sunchine Coast, Salt Spring --- none of these have their own class though... Now you've got me thinking - and salivating for more. Thanks again, Graham

Very nice, very nice. It sounds like some truly excellent, worthwhile footage. If your making or selling extra copies, let me know

D'oh!
'S' class... (smacks forehead)
From the model put together by bcssbcfccollector and confirming against photos in Queens of BC, I'd guess it's the Sidney or Tsawwassen.
(Most of my other footage is of WSF boats, but there's some CP and Black Ball in there too. ;D)

"S" class would be for Sidney / Tsawwassen

Maybe I'm starting to show my age? Thanks for clarifying.

Seeing as how he's the biggest tease on the boards, I vote to change Barnacle's screen-name to 'Bettie Page'.

Um. *blush*
At this point I'm still clearing out all the reels of irrelevant footage (the Christmas films that came in the batch lot) to give myself room to edit. But I'll slip on over to the film desk this evening in hopes of possibly doing some relevant cuts.

Romeo Tango?
Cutting's underway. I was stripping footage off a reel that looked like a scrapper when I found something looking suspiciously like an approach to Sidney, shot from the boat. I'm putting it on the reel just in case... so I'm up to 1950. (I'm assembling it in as close to chronological order as possible.)
The shot of a steam train underway is going on a separate reel, but I'll have it all converted at once (and put up the shots of the train to see if anyone here can recognize it... I'd be shocked to find out it's the Royal Hudson, but there we are).

Ah, I get it. In fact I have a reel here that I've completely forgotten what is on it (if anything). I have a couple I'll have to bung through the projector tonight... fortunately there's a fresh jar of Jelly Belly jellybeans in the house. Moral fortification, y'know...

Status update: Two formats out of three complete! Standard-8mm reel has been compiled into Master Reel #1; I'm sending in all my 16mm stuff, so after some repairs to one reel (with the Chinook and a Princess on it, dated 1950), that is complete. All that remains now is the Super-8mm footage, and I have to learn how to use the press-tape splices on the fly. Wish me luck.

Today's report: no progress on film editing, but I did receive a new drive belt for my Super-8 projector. Installation of the belt and tightening of a specific screw made the rewind function a lot better, and the forward motion is working again. Yay! Now to take some of these old films that cropped up on eBay that I bought in lots and do some practice splices... ;D

You'll note that the thread started several weeks ago. Anyway, today's status report: still reviewing stacks of super-8 reels to make sure there is nothing worth keeping, then stripping film off them to use the reels in sorting. Or possible sale on eBay. Woo.

Status update: final cut-down of the Super-8 footage is now complete. All that remains is to actually pay someone to do it. The local Walgreen's is an agent for a company that cleans, splices, and frame-by-frame scans the film.
So, about $125 later, I ought to have something to show off. ;D

Maybe. I might do the conversion in two batches (the Super-8 and standard-8mm can be done on one DVD but the 16mm must be done separately) because, well, $125 (and that's a low estimate) is a big piece of discretionary funding with property taxes coming due. But because I like you guys so much, I'll do the stuff with the BC Ferries in it first. (Even though I suspect relatively few of you are interested in the footage of the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle. ;D)

Two to three weeks' wait... the 8mm and super-8mm stuff has been sent for conversion. Once I get it back, I'll get some screen shots to post.

I couldn't be thankful enough, and wouldn't even mind compensating financially if such footage made its way onto DVD sometime in the future. In any case I look forward to seeing some of the results. (Even though I suspect relatively few of you are interested in the footage of the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle. ;D) Oddly enough I'd be interested in getting ahold of some of that World's Fair footage; my mom as a youngster on a family vacation, travelled to the US Pacific Northwest and Canadian West Coast for the '62 World's Fair in Seattle, and even took the Coho and stayed in Victoria decades before my folks met, my dad being from Nova Scotia and my mom from L.A. County in So.Cal., let alone before they eventually moved to Vancouver's Kits neighbourhood and to Canada.
