I know there are more pressing issues right now. Especially with the impending strike vote & all, but I've had this question in the back of my head for years now & while I can remember it, I figure I'd better ask it. At what point did they move/relocate the Provincial Coat of arms shield from many of the older ships? & more importantly. Why? I.E: If you look above the bow doors on the Queen of Tsawwassen & Sidney(This was done while she was still in svc) the coat of arms has been completely removed. While once located in the same spot on The Burnaby, Nanaimo & New West -until HER conversion in '91 - the shield was relocated to just above the front windows in the forward lounge. The Nanaimo currently is like this. I guess I'm still against them tampering with history, but I best remember these vessels with the shield above the bow doors -in the pastel blue & while era. I'm assuming they were moved/removed due to safety concerns, like it falling on someone as they were loading/disembarking. Knowing the provincial governments paranoid liability fears, I wouldn't at all be surprised if this was EXACTLY the case, but if any of you could tell me the official reason, I would be greatful.

Even though I do not have the answere you are asking for I have been wondering since my trip on the Queen of Esquimalt why they are still on any ship since the ferries are now privatley owned. The Queen of Esquimalt currently has one in between the Wheelhouse windows and the Passenger deck lounge. Same with the Queen of Vancouver up untill at least she was serving the Nanaimo-Horseshoe Bay run this past June. You can probably put your money on this: On the lifted V class ships the very front end of the passenger deck was cut off in order to have more room for the Upper cardeck ramp. If you look at the bow of the Esquimalt for example you will noticed that now it is very straight as apposed to the rounded bow it had before its lifting. When the V Class ships first returned from been lifted they had the rounded bow which provided difficulties for the upper level ramp. Thus is why the shield was removed.

I am a bit lost here, what is this Coat of Arms your refering to??? Something about the front of the ships. Like the bows on the Burnaby and Nanaimo are more rounder but the lifted V class are more straighter.

The Coat of Arms is the official shield of the BC Ferry fleet, and has been in place from the beginning. A few years ago, the Queen of Sidney's actually fell off during a very rough crossing between Comox and Powell River. It was replaced. Latest rumour is that since the Ferries are no longer "Government owned", the shields will be removed. End of an era.

The emblem on the bow of the vessels is a rounded version of the province's coat of arms. The most obvious tip-off are the words "Splendor Sine Occasu" (splendor without diminishment), our province's motto. I believe BCFS is still allowed to carry the coat of arms because they have been appointed by the Government to provide sea transportation services. If the Government severs its ties completely with BCFS, however, by law they would have to remove the emblems. A link to more than you ever needed to know about our coat of arms: www.protocol.gov.bc.ca/protocol/prgs/symbols/coat_of_arms.htm

I am confident that the BC coat of arms, the BC flag, and the Canadian flag flown by our boats are quite safe and will be displayed proudly for years to come.
BC Ferries is a company whose sole client is the Province of BC. We British Columbians have the right to require our coat of arms, provincial flag and, yes, the picture of HM Queen Elizabeth to be displayed on every boat.
Until we allow our ships to registered in the Maldives or Cyprus, a maple leaf flag will fly on them, too.
PS to summer ferry riders: Here's what I see on every sunny trip .. tourists from every continent bunching up for a photo on the sun deck, wind whipping their hair, while the picture-taker makes sure our big Canadian flag is in the photo.

"The country you are in and registered to.."
Did I get that right? I hope so, because you are correct.
I grew up on Vancouver's waterfront. A leaking, listing Greek tub might haul her weary hull to our Terminal Dock. Above her stern ("Admiral Kalopsis -- Piraeus") there is their gallant blue-white flag.
BUT -- at the mast head, somewhere above the funnel and at least as high as the house flag: there snaps the Maple Leaf.
