Two new positions have just opened up, if anyone wants to join up on this crew... or wants to exchange their position for a new one. The positions are: Ship's carpenter (Chippy) - and Donkeyman... essentially the head of the ordinary engine room crew who are not officers. A holdover from the days of steam: a steam crane was called a donkey and the donkeyman would operate the steam winches to load and unload cargo from the ship's holds. We are also starting up an ordinance crew to operate the deck guns: first we need a Chief Ordnance Officer Hmmm...do we need to provide references and submit samples of our work to qualify for the ship's carpenter? ;D

It's all right here in "The Book of Armaments" (Chapter 2, verses 9-21): One, Two, FIVE!!! ================================================ Of course, since my answer to "What do you want to be when you grow up?" when I was 6-years-old was "the guy who tells the cars where to go on the ferry", perhaps I would stick with that for what I would want to be on board....

And you thought I was joking didn't you... Latest update to the crew roster... added D'Elete BC in NJ aboard as ship's carpenter. Still looking for a Donkeyman and an ordinance crew to operate the deck guns. Despite what Donella may tell you, the donkeyman ain't me... it's an engineering bunk and I try not to step on their toes down there... I stick with the deck crew. In addition to that, we are also looking to start up positions for the other watches... there should be at least 4 full watches. I'm just having trouble deciding whether or not we should have completely separate crews for each watch, like the southern routes, or have some sort of overlap as the northern runs would use, where most of the officers and chiefs stay the same and rotate through the watches, and the rest of the crew is filled out with enough deckhands, quartermasters, etc. to fill out each watch. Finally, I managed to find an actual photo of our grand ship just in case you were curious: Do any of you have similar high quality pics of the QoR (my favourite fictional ship)? Funny you had mentioned it, but I was ACTUALLY able to find a good picture of the former Queen of Richmond, before she was run up along the beach at Alang, India. This was probably on her last day of spontanious service, and was in a slightly adjusted Expo scheme. What I like is how the coat of arms was right up at the bow, which reminds me of the Queens of Sidney and Tsawwassen. The major difference between the Queen of Richmond and her half sisters, was the fact that she had no car deck windows, a near proper bow (the rubbing strake was there so that it could dock 'bow-to' at Deas, in order for the refit crews to be able to paint the bow), and no Dogwood logo on the funnel. She had no Dogwood Logo on the funnel because she was never considered an actual BC Ferry, because she never served full time on any route due to her bow, and ended up spending most of her days tucked away at Deas. Not bad for using the regular "paint" program, eh? As you can see from the photo, there are no decks providing cabin accommodations, so guess where the crew all get to sleep... unless someone wants to come up with a different design .

BCinNJ as carpenter! Oh my, everything will be overbuilt but will look great. If you get him to build something on one side of the ship you have to have him build something on the other side or the ship will list badly. And be prepared for him to yell at the naval architects - he loves doing that. ;D I will still hold out to be the one and only passenger. Just give me lots of notice for sailings so I can top up my life insurance beforehand and make sure my will is in order.

The Carpenter doesn't actually build the ship... maybe small modifications to it: say a cofferdam of we ever spring a leak. Although he would need to be a master craftsman and preferably a shipwright, too. It's good if he has some clout with the naval architects, too, as in some cases, I've been questioning there sense about certain design aspects of the ship anyway lately. Unfortunately, there will be no one and only passenger, because we are all passengers on the Queen of Richmond, so I hope you don't mind having some company and aren't worried about some of the duty stations being unmanned since the crew are also the only passengers.

If we, the members of this forum were a real crew.... Jeff Foxworthey would have a field day with us, as we would provide near infinite material for his "You Might Be A Redneck If...."

O.k.... I've been working on this again. This time trying to organize the existing crew list into watch rotations.
A Watch.
Officer of the watch: Captain: Chris Bridge Rotation: 3 rd officer: Airchime and various quartermasters, etc.
Chief Engineer: Nick and various engineroom assistants
Chief Steward: Flugel Horn.
B Watch.
Officer of the watch Chief officer: Scott Bridge Rotation: 4 th officer: Neil and various quartermasters, etc.
2nd Engineer: Alex and various engineroom assistants
2nd Steward: Cruise Director: Ian
C Watch
Officer of the watch 1st officer: Evergreenfleet Bridge Rotation: Various quartermasters, etc.
3rd Engineer: BCRailcndr and various engineroom assistants
D Watch
Officer of the watch. 2nd officer: Karl Bridge Rotation: 5th officer and Various quartermasters, etc.
1st engineer Cadmunkey and various engineroom assistants
As with original crew list, we'll always need more deckhands/quartermasters etc, to fill out these watches, as well as: it apparently seems we now need more various levels of stewards in the purser's square, as well as all the various assistant engineers.

Huh, I guess the 1st Engineer gets passed over. I also thought the Richmond had a live aboard crew as well.
Cheers,

Live aboard crew just means that they don't all get off at the next terminal and do a complete crew change... they just rotate through the watches instead. Some go to sleep, some go off duty, (some probably secretly sneak down to the engine room and imbibe whatever is down there) but the rotation ensures that the ship is always manned -- more or less.

Man I think we are all screwed up here. We barely have enough bodies to make up one 24h live aboard watch. My understanding is that the Queen of Richmond has one watch that never leaves the ship. You know "part of the crew, part of the ship."
So we would have a 0600-1800 shift, and a 1800-0600 shift. just like up north.
At least that's what I've been thinking all along.
Cheers,

Well, I'm bored and the boss is not around to give me something to do, so I have made up a ships anthem. Of course I cant write a damn song, but I can edit one that already exists. So I have changed some words around in the "Errogant Worms" - "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate" to create "Pirates on the Great Pacific Coast" as sung by the crew of the Queen of Richmond" Words in red are things that I have changed. I used to be a farmer, and I made a living fine, I had a little stretch of land along the CP line But times were hard and though I tried, the money wasn't there And the bankers came and took my land and told me "fair is fair" I looked for every kind of job, the answer always no "Hire you now?" they'd always laugh, "we just let twenty go!" The government, they promised me a measly little sum But I've got too much pride to end up just another bum. Then I thought, who gives a damn if all the jobs are gone? I'm gonna be a PIRATE on the great pacific coast!
And it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the straights Stealin' wheat and I-PODs and all the other freights It's a ho-hey, hi-hey sailors bar yer doors When ya see the Jolly Roger on Vancouver's mighty shores
Well, you'd think the local sailors would know that I'm at large But just the other day I found an unprotected barge I snuck up right behind them and they were none the wiser, I rammed their ship and sank it and I stole their fertilizer!
A Ferry outside of Vancouver spans the mighty straight Sailors cross in so much fear their stomachs are a'fright Cause they know that Captain Cornwell's hidin' in the sand bars I'll jump the bridge and knock them cold and sail off with their cars!
And it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the straights Stealin' wheat and I-PODs and all the other freights It's a ho-hey, hi-hey sailors bar yer doors When ya see the Jolly Roger on Vancouver's mighty shores
Well, Mountie Bob he chased me, he was always at my throat He followed on the shoreline cause he didn't own a boat But cutbacks were a'coming and the Mountie lost his job So now he's sailing with us, and we call him Salty Bob! A swingin' sword, a skull and bones and pleasant company I never pay my income tax and screw the GST (SCREW IT!!) Sailin down to Esquimalt, the terror of the seas If you wanna reach the ocean, boy, you gotta get by me!
And it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the straights Stealin' wheat and I-PODs and all the other freights It's a ho-hey, hi-hey sailors bar yer doors When ya see the Jolly Roger on Vancouver's mighty shores
(*spoken* Arrrr! Ya salty dog!) (*spoken* Arrrr! Ya salty gopher!) (*spoken* Arr.. ya.. salty bale of hay!) Well, Pirate life's appealing but you just don't find it here, I hear in South Alaska there's a band of buccaneers They roam the inside passage from Haines to Metlakatla And you're gonna lose your Stetson if you have to pass their way! Well, winter is a'comin' and a chill is in the breeze My Pirate days are over once the fraser starts to freeze I'll be back in springtime but now I have to go I hear there's lots of plunderin' down in New Mexico! And it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the straights Stealin' wheat and I-PODs and all the other freights It's a ho-hey, hi-hey sailors bar yer doors When ya see the Jolly Roger on Vancouver's mighty shores When ya see the Jolly Roger on Vancouver's mighty shores
Well, that's my creative jaunt for today. It doesn't follow the tune perfectly, but it works fairly well I think. The original song can be heard on Youtube: Cheers,

Hmmmm. Had another amusing thought. Guess we'll need more than one crew in the future, seeing as how so many other ghost ships have joined the fleet.
In addition to Queen of Richmond, it seems the fleet also includes the following ships:
Pompeii Queen
Queen of New Nanaimo
Renaissance Queen Queen of Renaissance
and
MV Coastal Vessels.
Also out there somewhere, I'm sure, is the Queen of Prince Rupert's long lost twin, although no one has ever heard of it by name to this date.

Queen of Kelsey Bay, I thought? I'll be her captain, seeing as that's my label on the forum now.
Plus, according to flug, there's a Queen of Squamish somewhere out there.

I'm in. ;D I'd probably end up as Terminal staff or something. Mind you, those semi trailers do need to be loaded. *points to Western Star 4900 EX* On the other hand, I'd probably be the dude sitting in a shipping container turned office that's SUPPOSED to see that the ship is properly provisioned.

I'll volunteer for the Queen of Squamish ( I've been there once ... or twice ) unless I'm needed somewhere on the QOR. I can tell the pointy end from the square end but I get all confused on those double enders. Maybe Ferryman could coach me .... I think I'd like to work on deck somewhere.

Ohh, that Queen of Squamish. Shes been needing some serious TLC lately. Shes been tied up at the Nexen Beach in Squamish for quite some time, and the rust shes accumulated with this wet winter we had is getting a little out of hand. There's no shore power at that dock either, so her engine rooms haven't been able to keep warm, so its going to be a pain to get her fired up again. I know you have good references so I think it's safe to say that the Masters position is open for you on the Queen of Squamish as well. The pay won't be as good, but at least you get to wear the Captains hat. I'll be happy to come out there and get you familiarized with the ship.

Thanks, Ferryman. I hear there are lots of spare parts available just across the 'duck pond' at that Woodfibre place. Now, if it ever stops raining ......

The Queen of Kelsey Bay is moored up in the head of Bute Inlet right now taking a break from serving route 48 to all the little logging camps along the BC Coast. I've been doing all my posting from her for the past few weeks. The crew change finally occured yesterday, so I was flown back to Pitt Meadows Airport early this morning. On the 'Kelsey Bay, we have two weeks on, two weeks off. I forget the name of my First mate...? On our next trip we'll be sailing out of the inlet, then up into Toba Inlet.

Hmmm. A captain without a crew, that`s a frightening thought. Guess they must have mutinied. Say, now... that`s a fun word. I could say that all day, ha-ha. Mutiny, mutiny, mutiny! That shall be our rallying cry.
