Regatta ( Oceania Cruises) @ Canada Place, Vancouver. I gather that Oceania Cruises is a 'boutique' small ship cruise line ... Sounds like maybe a better but more expensive option when compared to the big players in the cruise business.

Good sized cruise ship that enjoys a pretty good reputation. I have NO interest in cruising with 6000 other souls, or partaking in go cart races, water slides, etc. "Go small, then go home

Oceania Cruise Line is owned by Norwegian Cruise Lines and is their “mid market” product. Regency is their very top end line. There were 7 identical vessels constructed, known as R1-R7. Perhaps it was the naming that put them quickly into bankruptcy! Oceania and Azamara now have them all. Not a successful series of vessels.

NCL has a history of buying a very successful cruise line and in short order destroying them. Royal Viking was the worst, ruining a very successful operation in a few short years. From recent reports their changes at Oceania are causing upset with the Line’s large past passenger base. Meanwhile Regent still seem the ultimate top luxury line.

Sapphire Princess taking the scenic route around Bowen Island, while on a repositioning cruise, as seen from the much smaller Queen of Surrey. October 8, 2023

My favourite class of the Princess fleet and perhaps the best of the 7 remaining vessels. She has a covered climate controlled pool area for hot/cool/ wet days and 800 less passengers than 4 of her fleet mates owing to one less accommodation decks than the newest 4.

Holland America's Eurodam (IMO 9378448) at Canada Place, Vancouver. Holland America is another one of the 'brands' owned by Carnival Corp. Carnival has a major chunk of the Alaska cruise market.

A small digression: Re Holland-America line - in the mid 1980s, I was asked to join the new Nieuw Amsterdam (1984-2018) as a musician, but I politely declined the kind offer for personal reasons. However, it would have been fun! Photo credits - Simplon Postcards

Radiance of the Seas had major mechanical/technical issues. A northbound cruise was cancelled after all passengers had boarded. Repairs took several days. No word as to what the issues were, but that class of vessel along with Celebrity fleet mates have had several major issues with the podded propulsion systems. Another issue with those two classes has been with gas turbines. On the port aft quarter you can see "GTV" lettering, indicating Gas Turbine Vessel. Over time the price of suitable fuel as skyrocketed and potential savings never materialized. On the Celebrity (sharing the same systems) diesel generator plants have been added into void spaces, often with exhaust stacks added to the forward mast structure. Princess undertook the same action with their Coral and Island Princesses. Not all new technologies work out in the end!
