Here's the type of notice that would frustrate me, if I were a regular user of this particular ferry-run:
Let's pretend that I need to get to use this ferry-run today or maybe tomorrow or maybe the next day. The above notice gives me no indication of whether this is a few-hours matter, a 1-day matter, or a 2-day matter, or a 1-week matter.
The work of BCFS' communications department would improve if they would actually give the answer (or say that they don't know) to the questions that ferry-users would most likely ask re this service-notice.
As it is, they are leaving everyone hanging, waiting for the next notice, which could come (or not come) at any moment. I guess they get thrilled by keeping users in suspense....... ;D

According to my information there was an accident which damaged the dock. No injuries to crew or passengers. They are working on repairs now.

Now that's the kind of information that should be included in the service notice. Just saying that service has been suspended is not enough. How simple is it to say something like:
"Service on the Crofton-Vesuvius run has been suspended due to damage to the dock. Repairs are underway, and we will inform our customers as soon as we know when service will resume. We apologize for any inconvenience this will cause. The Skeena Queen will be doing extra runs on the Swartz Bay - Fulford route to minimize the effect on travelers."
I agree with you wholeheartedly, Flugel. They need to put more information into their Service Notices. I have heard complaints from people about that before, and not just from Ferry Nerds.

Based on member KerrySSI's location, I'd narrow that down to a choice between Crofton dock and Vesuvius dock. Check the weekly newspaper www.gulfislandsdriftwood.com on Wednesday for a possible news story.

Vesuvius. Little River? Westview? Is something going on up there? Yeah, the Burnaby has been tied up for a round trip today due to high winds. At least that's what was mentioned on the service notice that DENelson posted...

Well, they have now posted the Spirit of VI's refit period: Service Notice - Spirit of Vancouver Island Annual RefitPosted Tuesday, December 23, 2008 Note: This Service Notice applies to the following route(s): - Vancouver (Tsawwassen) - Victoria (Swartz Bay) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Spirit of Vancouver Island, which is one of the largest ships in BC Ferries fleet, will be out of service on the Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay route for its annual refit from Monday, January 5 through Sunday, February 1 inclusive. During this refit period, the Coastal Celebration will be the replacement vessel. To avoid possible overloads at peak sailing times, customers are encouraged to plan ahead by making a reservation or by arriving early at the terminal for their desired sailing. In particular, the first sailing of the day from Swartz Bay is expected to be busy. BC Ferries looks forward to returning the Spirit of Vancouver Island to service on Monday, February 2. Interesting, they are almost apologizing for providing the C-Cell in place of the SoVI. Apparently they are also 'looking forward' to the return of the SoVI to service in February. Surely providing a Coast Boat in place of a Spirit would be providing the traveling public with a whole new level of service? ;D

FERRIES CANCELLED
A mechanical problem forced cancellations early Friday on the Tsawwassen-Duke Point ferry route.
Cancelled were:
• the 5:15 a.m. sailing departing Duke Point on Vancouver Island;
• the 7:45 a.m. sailing departing Tsawwassen on the mainland.
It was expected a ferry would be available to replace the out-of-service Coastal Inspiration beginning with the 10:15 a.m. sailing out of Duke Point.

according to the Current Conditions page The Queen of Cowichan is doing the 8:l5 dep from Duke Point, so it looks like The Cow will be on Route #30 the rest of the day.
I wonder how serious the CI's problem is?

Until ALL the bugs are worked out of the Coastals and the Spirits are all in good shape, and we're sure that the New West is running at $50 mil. efficiencey, it might even be an idea to keep the 'Vancouver' stached somewhere, ...bless the venerable old V's

it might even be an idea to keep the 'Vancouver' stached somewhere I live near Scott Rd and Nordel Wy in Surrey, and I would be willing to DONATE my underground parking stall -- I currently have it rented out at $30/mo, but I'd be willing to park the QoV there for free ....
