Could see that happening with the Tenaka maybe:) Not sure whether it would be cheaper to keep it afloat or "ground" it somewhere.

Thanks for posting that; a neat story. I was daydreaming the other day about owning a retired ferry (the Q-Tsawwassen) and was wondering what the optimal size would be for an ex-ferry to use to live on and to use as a yacht. I concluded that Q-Tsawwassen was too big. That little ferry in that story looked to be a good size. Among current, older BC ferries, I think the Nimpkish would be a good candidate for a personal houseboat/yacht. You could fill in the car-lanes under the superstructure, much like was done on the Garibaldi II. Obviously the love of historical ships would be the major reason for doing such a purchase and renovation.......

We talked a few weeks (months?) ago about saving the QofT and I posted about that very avant garde older couple who live in a ferry on the New Jersey shore. They use it as an art studio and open for "shows" now and then. It is shorter than the Tswwassen and is quite narrow in comparison. But still plenty of room and art space. I don't believe the ferry can operate under its own power and they have to check all 5 bilge compartments everyday for leaks. The Tswwassen could become a unique floating condo and subdivided. However, I can imagine what the condo fees would be just to keep up with maintenance. I still think a gallery or meeting/banquet space would be unique - moored near the Lonsdale Quay or in Steveston.

If i was going to do this with one of our ships, i would pick the Tenaka, because I found her to be, in many respects, a smaller version of the Queen of Tsawwassen just in terms of how she feels and how she operates.

Well I just had a text news story and now can't seem to find it. However here is a different one. hoboken411.com/archives/3573There was also a TV program called Weird Houses or something like that where the couple was actually interviewed and they did a tour of the ferry. Maybe someone knows what I am talking about. Probably on HGTV and maybe actually on YouTube. The ferry is called Yankee. Courtesy of BCinNJ here is another pic of the ferry in this guy's blog. www.tempcity.com/bitchless/index.php?showtopic=1916 It refers to the series Overboard Boats where the ferry was shown if that helps for finding the episode on YouTube or somewhere.

Obviously the love of historical ships would be the major reason for doing such a purchase and renovation....... The QoT would be a little too large for a single family to consider (unless it was that family with 17 kids or whatever!!), but to do it, as Northern Exploration suggested like a condo-type operation does have some merit to it. Operating costs would vary wildly depending on whether she was sailing full time or part time, or simply docked some place.

I was thinking docked to get around Transport Canada regs. I think once it is permanently moored the rules soften quite a bit. Just as long as we are dreaming. ;D
