The Westerdam was suppose to stop in Victoria tomorrow as the last cruise ship this season but that was cancelled cause of the weather. The Sapphire Princess is in dock right now in Victoria and it suppose to depart at 22:00 tonight. I am wondering if that will happen if the weather is crazy. That must suck for the people that are on the ships in Vancouver stuck in dock. I assume they would be onboard. They might have to cancel the Astoria stop tomorrow cause they wont be there in time! It also looks like the Oosterdam is still docked in Seattle cause of the wind.

Grand Princess arrives at the Esquimalt Graving dock on Thursday morning, for a major refit. Unusual for a cruise ship to be up this way in winter. I thing Queen of New West was in the drydock last week.

I thing Queen of New West was in the drydock last week. I know of a guy who works for Victoria Propeller, and he'll be working on that ship during the next while.

I saw the Grand Princess tonight at the Esquimalt Drydock. She was all lit up. Anyone know how long she will be here for. It's cool but weird seeing a cruise ship up here during the winter. It has been done before though.

Celebrity and Princess have tweeked an intinerary each, and now Nanaimo will see a cruise ship call in the spring and then in the fall. An interesting tidbit is that the Celebrity Solstice, the fall arrival, is too tall to fit under the power wires at Seymour Narrows. They have just hinged the top portion of her main mast so that she can pass under Lion's Gate Bridge for her one Vancouver call. Grand Princess the spring visitor was built with that "shopping cart handle" lounge high up on the stern. Owing to metal fatigue, she had that large structure cut off three years ago. Her sisters Golden and Star still have that disco lounge towering 18 floors above the sea and are seen in Victoria weekly!

Venice Italy passed new regulations which limit the size of the cruise ships which may sail up the Grand Canal. No vessel over 96,000 tons are permitted after January 2015. Cruise lines are scrambling to move some of their non compliant ships out of the Med and replace them with vessel that meet the new regulations. Today I noticed 3 significant changes for the summer of 2015 in our local waters. Royal Caribbean is not bringing Rhapsody of the Seas back from Australia which has been the rotation for several years now; she is heading via the Suez to the Med. A replacement has not been announced. Celebrity Century will not return in 2015 and she too is headed via the Suez to Italy. A replacement has not been announced, but we know the new Solstice class are too high for the power wires at Seymour, so that is not an option. Princess is taking the Island Princess over to the Med, and replacing her with another of their largest Grand Class vessels, Ruby Princess; and owing to the stopped work on the new Panama Canal, she will have to sail around South America. More deployment changes will occur!

The Solstice has a stack that cam be lowered to get under the Lions Gate Bridge would this be low enough to get under the wires @ Seymour?
Maybe we will see a second Millennium Class Vessel In Vancouver.
Is the Crown Princess now the same height as the Celebrity Solstice she has no problem with the wires @ Seymour Narrows .

Crown Princess has an "air draft" of 60.0 M. Celebrity Solstice was 64.0 M but they have recently hinged a piece of her structure in order for her to pass under Lions Gate. I was lead to believe it was the main mast or stern light atop the funnel. She is now listed at 61.0M
First Narrows at Lions Gate has 61.0 clearance, but you must remember this is for maximum high tide.
The power wires at Seymour Narrows have a clearance of 58.0M; but Crown Princess can schedule her passing to avoid the high water obstacle. Solsltice remains too high for this passage.

Celebrity Century I leaving Celebtiry's fleet next April. no replacement for her has been announced. That certainly leaves a hole in their fleet.

Her final two cruises are at a real bargain price! 14 days Singapore to Dubai, then 15 days onwards to Rome. I am not a Celebrity fan, but did take the plunge and booked!

That's like the CPR world cruises of yesteryear (ie. 1930s) Well, maybe not as extravegent. I just finished reading a book on Empress of Britain and the 4 month world cruises that she'd do in wintertime.

Jewel of the Seas will sail out of Seattle for the 2015 Alaska Season. It will be interesting to see how Celebrity fills the gap left by Century's retirement and Vancouver lose a ship.

So far Royal Caribbean have not changed any bookings from Rhapsody to Jewel, but I do see that earlier this week Celebrity altered their bookings from Century to Infinity; joining Millennium and Solstice on the Alaskan runs.

The Pacific Princess that is up here for the Alaska Season I just saw about a half hour ago heading for Esquimalt Drydock. Her next cruise is not till May 13th so I guess she is going in for some maintenance in Victoria.

...and for 2015, Nanaimo gets 3 cruise ships. Three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then Nanaimo's 2015 cruise ship season is complete. ------------- Celebrity Infinity June 5, 2015 Friday 0700 – 1700 hours from Ketchikan Silver Shadow July 15, 2015 Wednesday 1200 – 2300 hours from Sitka Celebrity Solstice September 21, 2015 Monday 0700 – 1700 hours from Seattle -------------- Silver Shadow is part of Silversea Luxury Cruises, with smaller ships and more service. Thankfully I followed Mike's 'epistle' right to the end, as for a moment I thought he was publishing the 2025 BC Ferries sailing schedule between Nanaimo and Vancouver. Hmm, come to think of it, by 2025 it might be cheaper to take a cruise to Alaska than travel on a BC Ferry.

I been on the Infinity to Panama! Beautiful ship! And FYI it's already cheaper to take a cruise to Alaska! BC Ferries northern fares are a joke! I would love to do another trip on the Nor Ex but it's too expensive!

I would love to do another trip on the Nor Ex but it's too expensive! Agreed, the prices on the Port Hardy -Prince Rupert run are totally out of line with the real world but that's endemic with the entire BC Ferries pricing policy. Province-wide, everyone who has an I.Q. above room temperature is telling our public policy makers the same resounding mantra! " If you lower the fares, and bite the $$ bullet for a wee while, the users of the Ferry system, province-wide, WILL COME BACK!"
I'm REALLY beginning to be jealous of the Christie Clark Liberals, Minister Stone, the BC Ferry Commission et al, having more brain matter stuffed inside their noggins than I do!! It's not fair! How come they get all the brains and we.......? oh well.
'Karl', perhaps you could lower your sights and do a trip through the Mid-Coast run on the Nimpkish, after all, she does at least have potable water!

I finally took a look at my copy of the cruise schedule from my friend at Princess Cruises and I must say, damn this upcoming season is going to be busy! I had to double check on the Port Metro Vancouver website to confirm that there was to average 2-3 ships almost everyday at Canada Place!I'm excited than ever! Hopefully I get back on board with a motor coach company again this summer so I can enjoy the cruise season like I usually do Also looking forward to everyone's shots!

I was looking ahead to the 2016 season, and see one of Royal Caribbean's very large vessels will be making her way to the west coast. Explorer of the Seas will cross the Pacific from Australia, and run weekly Alaska trips from Seattle. She is too high for the power wires at Seymour Narrows and there is debate about her clearance for First Narrows, thus her being based in Seattle rather than Vancouver. Rumour has it that Norwegian is also looking at one of their new big vessels for the west coast in 2016 or 2017. A comparison Explorer to Celebrity Silhouette: Explorer: 137,308 T, 1020ft, 127 ft beam, 3 pods-one fixed, 3114 passengers Silhouette: 121878 T, 1033ft, 121 ft beam, 2 pods, 2850 passengers.
