Sorry, but where and what is Martha's Vineyard? Just a vineyard? A community? Something of the same existence as the 'Queen of Richmond'? I heard about it here an there, and know i'm curious. Let me Google that for you... lmgtfy.com/?q=Martha%27s+Vineyard

Martha's Vineyard is a large island in the US State of Massachusetts. (To the S.E. of Boston) It is accessible by vehicle ferry from Wood's Hole, Massachusetts. It is well known as a destination for various members of the Kennedy family. Martha's Vineyard is also home of two Seattle-designed ferries. One is the 242-foot MV GOVERNOR. This began her career in 1954 as San Diego's MV CROWN CITY. After the San Diego Bay Bridge pink-slipped the ferries there, she came to Puget Sound as MV KULSHAN. After subbing for the MV HIYU at Point Defiance in late 1982, she was towed via the Panama Canal to the east coast and ran between lower Manhattan and Governors Island for the US Coast Guard as the GOVERNOR. After being surplussed after the Coast Guard's departure from that island, this vessel became part of the SSA and runs freight trips between Woods Hole and Martha's Vineyard. The other is the MV ISLAND HOME. She is considered as the jumbo ferry of the SSA. Measuring 255 feet in length, she can carry 1200 passengers and 60 cars (76 with stowable upper car decks deployed). She is the pattern for our new ferries being built for the Keystone-Port Townsend run here on Puget Sound. Other major ferries there are the MV MARTHA'S VINEYARD, MV NANTUCKET, and MV EAGLE.

Martha's Vineyard is really pretty. The communities are really old, and I loved the "Cape" and colonial architecture when I went there last year. Here are a few pics I took: M/V Island Home departing Vineyard Haven Edgartown Chappaquiddick Ferry Edgartown Light

Obama has been vacationing there, as did the Clintons when they were in office. Housing is obscenely expensive and there are quite a few very large estates. One of those estates has become a democratic Presidential retreat of sorts because the property is large enough and easy for the Secret Service to secure. I am not sure if they "rent it" or if it is in part or in whole provided to them, I just know it has been mostly offered to the donkey orientated not the elephantine leaning people.

Chappaquiddick Ferry Now there's a name that was in the news again, last week. Maybe now, we can just remember it for the ferry that your picture shows...

Yeah, it's unfortunate that the name Chappaquiddick is indelibly linked to Senator Kennedy's accident, and the death of that girl oh-so-long ago. He never really lived that one down, I'm afraid.

Yup, it was the Chappaquiddick ferry that he drove off of....
And RFK was shot in the galley of the MV Ambassador cruise-ship......
just some friendly kidding around.
==============
The ferry is on the Chappaquiddick river, and Edward Kennedy crashed his car into that same river (not from the ferry) in 1969? and his passenger died (and he didn't report the accident).
Therefore that unique name of a river became forever associated with the mistake that likely prevented Mr. Kennedy from being a party-candidate for president.
or so I've read....

That's weird, because the footage I've seen showed that he had driven, or tried to drive across a long decrepit bridge that looked like it collapsed under the weight of the car. There was nothing to indicate it was at the ferry between the two islands.

How and when are BC Ferries going to replace the B and C class?

well when you look at the new Salish ones, i think they look ugly. i really like the look of the Coastal Class, so if they do anything make a cross between the Coastal and the Queen Of New West

well when you look at the new Salish ones, i think they look ugly. i really like the look of the Coastal Class, so if they do anything make a cross between the Coastal and the Queen Of New West Now that I've seen construction photos of the Salish class vessels, they do not look so bad to me. No, they do not have the graceful, flowing lines of the original Spauldings, but no ferry does, anymore. The new vessels are what they are: utilitarian ships. As for new major vessels to replace the C-Class, I think a hybrid between the Coastal Class and the C-Class would be a good way to go. Use the Coastal Class design as the template, but make the passenger decks more like the C-Class. What I mean by that is: make Deck 5 the primary passenger deck (full width) with forward seating lounges on both ends (like the C-Class), make Deck 6 the Sun Deck with solariums at each end, and bridges on top of that (Deck 7), kind of like what the Olympic Class vessels have, and like the solariums on Deck 7 of the Coastals (only with a bridge above it). So, like I said, it would be a cross between the C-Class and the current Coastals. Car deck layouts and stairwell configurations would be like the Coastals. With only 1 main passenger cabin level, passenger yield would be less than the current Coastals, but that might be a better fit for Route 30 and Route 2, as a direct replacement for the current C's. Build a few of these and then shift C-Ins or C-Ren over to Route 1 to replace New West, where the extra passenger capacity is most needed.

late to the discussion again. sorry.
i hate the german boats (for many reasons). i think the spirit boats are the best the corporation has ever built. i think i saw somewhere online that the corporation cannot build more of those b/c they dont own the design specs. i cant find where i saw that anymore. was it on this forum or did i dream it up? i cant find this using the search thread. there are many threads for each of the spirits, but i dont think there is a spirit class thread.
to this day, the fastcats still look really cool btw...

I like the idea of the Spirit class being used as a guide. With platform decks that could be used during heavy traffic times like long weekends or whenever needed, and folded up the rest of the time. I always thought they should have built four of the Spirit class for the southern Vancouver Island route. At this point though a double ended ferry like the Coastal class would be more efficient and also could be moved to other routes as demands required.

I don’t see BC Ferries using platform decks due the delays they caused in major routes. I could see them getting gallery decks because they don’t cause many delays.
