Well.....Initially I was going to go and meet up with Graham at Horseshoe Bay, and head over to Departure Bay to meet up with Scott and Karl, so we could wander the Queen of Alberni. That's gotten cancelled though, as she's leaving at 4:00am tomorrow morning.
So I was thinking....seeming I went out of my way to get tomorrow off, I may as well do a Ferry trip. I've been thinking of catching the 3:00pm out of Horseshoe Bay, and returning on the 5:00pm out of Departure Bay. It's supposed to be nice and windy tomorrow, so it might be neat to get out there in the wind on a Ferry. Seeming it's on a Wednesday, which is awkward for probably everyone on this forum, because of either work or school. But I thought I'd ask anyway, would anyone else be interested in doing this?

Ooooh boy.....
It's pretty hectic out there. Right now, I can't even get near Horseshoe Bay, as the Sea to Sky Highway is closed in about 3 spots between here and Horseshoe Bay. My only concern is when it does open, and the 3pm sailing is definitely a go, I worry about not being able to get back to the Mainland if BC Ferries decided to cancel the 5pm sailings, as they've realized just how rough it was.
Anyways, I'll decide if I'm going or not by 1:00pm.

Graham, are you still planning to come..?
Sailings are to resume at 3:00 from both sides (weather permitting), so if any of you guys are still up to it - I will be there...

I'm sorry, I would go if I could, but now I definitely can't. The Sea to Sky highway is an absolute mess, debris and trees blocking the road, and one of the rivers is flowing over one of the bridges right now. So much for that.

Yeah I have been listening to News 1130 all day and it's crazy over there. Not so bad here though. It's 3:30pm now so I wont be able to do the trip.

Forgive me as a newcomer, but do some of you people ride the ferries just to ride the ferries? Do you get special deals? Do you take your cars?

Here's the deal: I like to call them "ferry journeys." It is exactly that. We ride them for the sake of it. And, if at all possible, we try and get a tour of the boat as well.
We do not take our cars. This is because of the outragious rates we would have to pay if we did. And if we do, it is because we are continuing on to another terminal/ferry.
We do not get special deals, unfortunatley. We pay the full rate like everyone else. We are regulars; however we do get strange looks from others.

Forgive me as a newcomer, but do some of you people ride the ferries just to ride the ferries? Do you get special deals? Do you take your cars? Good Evening, sgrant. We, as Ferry geeks are always planning to ride on Ferries, just for the sake of getting out on a Ferry. Do we get special deals? Ah, people always ask me that when I tell people about our little trips. We wish we did get special deals, but of course we don't. We pay the same Fares as everyone else does, but we still look for ways to get more bang for our buck. For example, in August 2006, 5 other members, plus myself took advantage of the Circlepac package, which is a 15% discount while travelling Between the Lower Mainland and the Island. So we went from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay, Comox to Powell River, then just for fun, we went from Powell River to Texada, by that time, the day was over, and we booked all booked a Motel Room in Powell River. The next morning we went for Saltery Bay to go to Earls Cove, and finally on to the Langdale to Horseshoe Bay route. Most of us brought our own vehicles. We also met up with about 4 other members, at different parts of our journey as well. On the smaller day trips, to say, the Gulf Islands, we'll leave our vehicles behind. In the Spring, a group of us are planning on doing a few more "big" trips for fun. One of them would be to take the Queen of Prince Rupet to Prince Rupert, and then over to the Queen Charlotte Islands, and then back to Port Hardy. Yikes, that will be an expensive one.....Another trip we're planning on, is a Sailpass trip, which includes making our way to Hornby, Cortes, and Malcome Islands, to ride the various little ferries that serve the routes that lead up to those Islands. Yep, we have alot on our agenda, but that's what keeps it interesting. What the point of being a Ferry geek, and not riding any Ferries?

Huh, interesting. Next time I ride on a ferry I'll be wondering who the ferry fans are. I do agree that people get jaded about what really is a neat experience - ferry rides. The sort of thing they'll travel around the world to experience elsewhere.
I have heard of people riding for free as guests of a BCF employee.
Did any of you ride the CPR ferry that used to go from downtown to Nanaimo? I mean the fancy one that predated the barge-like thing. I used to use it to go on bicycle trips on the island. My favourite run was the one that got into Nanaimo at 6:00am. You could drag a chair outside the fantail and watch the sun come up in the east. Or sleep on the floor of what had formerly been the bar. You'd have it all to yourself.

I hope to catch the incoming storm tomorrow morning and figured I'd put the call out there for anyone interested in joining me, even though it's quite late notice. I'm open to taking just about any route of the South Coast, it's the storm that I'm there for after all, so it also might be easier for someone to get to on such short notice.

Hope you don't get stuck on the other side... Why I only considered mainland-based vessels. It looks like I'll be on the 10:15 sailing of the 'New West out of Tsawwassen tomorrow, giving me the best chance of both not having the sailing cancelled as well as hitting the first wave of the storm as it arrives in the afternoon on the way back (or possibly wait for the 'Coquitlam if the 'New West goes out of service or to experience a 'C' in a storm). My seeming eagerness is probably due to the fact that I've yet to be on a ferry in a storm, have been wanting to for a while, and thoroughly enjoyed rough seas growing up when my family owned a 38' sailboat.

It looks like the winds should be diminishing later in the day tommorrow so I am planning to take the 12:45pm New West sailing tommorrow then the 5:45pm Coquitlam sailing back to Duke Point.
