Just to divert the conversation from the New Members thread, here's a seperate thread to talk about the Horns. I have a feeling Airchime and I will be the only ones posting on this thread , but oh well. Here's a question for the somewhat frequent Northern vessel travellers. Does anyone know how many chimes the Queen of Prince Rupert has? Maybe my eyes are fooling me, but I think I see 5 chimes on her mast. Also, by any chance, does anyone just happen to have a recording of the 'Ruperts horn? Queen of Rupert, pic by Graham. Also, if anyone just might happen to know how many chimes the 'North had, and if anyone has any recordings of it as well. I think the 'North had two, but it's hard to say if those are the horns I'm looking at. Queen of the North, pic by Graham.

The QUEEN OF PRINCE RUPERT has three whistles. The last time and only time I heard her whistles was when she stood in for the PRINCESS MARGUERITE in 1980. The whistles at that time were tuned in the same major chord as the seven VICTORIA class ferries had.
The BCSSC fitted the VANCOUVER ISLAND PRINCESS with the same D-MINOR chord triple trumpets you hear on the QUEEN OF OAK BAY, QUEEN OF SURREY II, QUEEN OF COQUITLAM, QUEEN OF COWICHAN, and QUEEN OF ALBERNI.
I was totally disgusted with the people who operated the QUEEN OF BURNABY (in disguised names) on the Seattle run. I was expecting major chords to fill Seattle's streets. They only gave us an abstract as the base note was turned off. I hated that!

Interesting that the Prince Rupert has a three chime. Thanks for confirming that, ferrynut.
Believe it or not, the Burnaby still has its bass note "turned off", and it annoys me as well. Oh well, it's better than the Electric one tone cough(junk)cough horns used on the Spirits.

So what chord-type would we get with a 5-tone system?
1 (root) - 3 - 5 - 7 - 1 (octave above)
And would the 7th be a minor or major? I prefer a Maj-7th chord.
Or how about adding a 9th as the top-note?

And, by the way, the people who operated the VIP on the Seattle run lacked professionalism when sounding her whistles in fog on Puget Sound. You normally hear a long blast from ships. They only let out one second from the VIP's stack.
I know this as I have a get-away place on Whidbey Island's Admiralty Inlet side.
I guess that the captain was a JS Bach hater (and his magnificent Toccata and Fugue in D Minor). I love this sound! Each time I hear the ending of that piece, I say to myself "Here comes the QUEEN OF OAK BAY!".

I have some videos that I shot on ferries in the early 90's. One has V's going through Active Pass, and both blowing their whistles. The V class 3-tone horn can be heard echoing around the islands. I also, I believe, have one of the QotN leaving Port Hardy and blowing its whistle as it backs out of the terminal. The North had a somewhat monotone whistle like those on the Spirit class. I will attempt to digitize these and put them on my photo site. I do not have a QPR whistle but I will be traveling on her after Christmas. She does have, I believe, a 3-tone just like the V's.
BTW, how do guys go about getting your recordings of the ships' whistles?

That would be great if you could post those, Jim!
When I had a functional video camera, which was a regular videotape camera, I would just plug in an AV cord into my computer, on to an imput I had to install myself. Then I would just put the video on to Windows Movie Maker, and cut the parts of the video out that I didnt want, so it was just the horn sounding from start to finnish. Then just made it a sound file. That video has broken on me now, and I haven't bothered to get a new camera yet, but I hope to in the new year. All I have to use right now, is using my digital camera which can film videos with sound. When I upload the pics on to my computer, it will upload the video as a Quicktime file, and I'll have to edit the video, and convert it to a sound file on another video editing program I have.

Here's the only recording I could find over the 'Net, that has the Ruperts Horn. Though it wasn't sounded in the best circumstances, because it was from the ceremony for the Queen of the North. This is found from Pkeenlysides webpage, and the horn sounding is at the end of the clip. You also have to look for the picture of the crew member ringing the bell, and move your cursor over the picture to trigger the recording. modena.intergate.ca/personal/pl8s/IP/QoTN/IP_QTN_2.htm#For more info on his page.... modena.intergate.ca/personal/pl8s/IP/QoTN/IP_QTN.htm

Wha?? When did you sail?? I was on her yesterday too ;D I caught the 11:10 to Saltspring and the 15:30 back to Tsawwassen. One thing I noticed though, I overheard several crew members not too happy they had the Queen of Nanaimo back.

Coincidence or what, eh?

I have a small pocket tape recorder with me. It's about the size of a cell phone. It's digital, so I can save my recordings on the computer.

I got a really bad migrane when we were leaving Mayne Island and found a quiet corner to sleep in for the trip back to Tsawwassen. My first time on the Queen of Nanaimo too.
