I've heard quite a bit of critisism about David Hahn and how things are run at BC Ferries head office over the past year or so. So let's put you in the shoes of David Hahn.
Let's pretend that YOU are at the helm of one of the most comlex ferry systems on the planet. How would you improve BC Ferries? How would you change things? How would you replace the aging V class? How would you react to: -Queen of the North sinking -Quinsam incident -Queen of Oak Bay accident -Queen of Capilano mechanical difficulties -Labour-Day break-down disaster of 2005 -Graham and his nosy little camera
But in all seriousness here folks, we need to think about who we're critisizing and what he really did wrong.

Sorry to come in so soon but I am laying a challenge flag down.
1. Is it really Hahn that is making that decision or is the media clouding up the truth? 2. Could it possibly be the "SoCreds" are making the decisions and Hahn is being paid to do it?
Now what was interesting that a point was brought up on CBC that Glen Clark or was it this forum? He dealt with the New Westminter incident within a matter of months. BCFS I am going to call a delay of game on.
I'd be all up front and admit so that people do not get suspicious and look for ways to not repeat history. This is for all the incidents. Graham and his nosy camera, you can start saying the same thing about me. WSF does not make a big deal about it whatsoever where as BCFS has.
I cannot say that there is no foul play yet but I can admit displeasure for waiting for results which used to come within a few months and now takes years. I believe that there is something fishy at the bottom of the stack and someone on the inside is making things worse. We may want to step back and look at not what to do but who is making these problems worse than they are?
Let's back it up and go to who before we go into what would you do. My simple approach would be up front with the media and not go into the "no comment" or say you do not have results at the time. After these incidents, make sure it does not happen again.
With the quinsam incident, I got a question and I want an answer and it is a rather simple one.
1. Was the greenlight on at the loading ramp for the truck and the crossing guard up still?

How would you replace the aging V class? I would order and commission 3 Super C Class vessels.... wait, they're doing that.

Alright all.
There appears to be a large audience out there interested and concerned about the Quinsam accident. It has happened before and why hasn't BC Ferries come out of the box? Strike one against Hahn.
However, again, say you're at the head of the company, and you make a quick thinking decision on how to fix the problem. Later, the public comes out with all the things he should have done.
Take all the factors into consideration, and he actually did a pretty good job. He is deffinatley suitable for the job.
Dan: In the press release sent out to customers regarding the Quinsam accident, it says "The vessel pulled away unexpectedly while loading vehicles." Therefore, we can assume that normal loading procedures were underway and vehicles were loading as per usual.
Cascade: You make an interesting point about lack of experience in BCFS. And it's a good one. And, this is one of the most newsworthy years for BC Ferries. Could this be a contributing factor?

"Therefore, we can assume" Assumptions are not a very good way of looking at things. It narrows it down but you need to look for a broader way of looking at things and not just "assume" something is that way, it may point the blame in the wrong direction.

I realise that you can't always rely on assumptions. If we did that, everyone would assume everything, nothing would get done, and the world would be chaos.
However, it does help you get on the right track. If you "assume" certain things, you can sometimes lead to a conclusion about something.
Let's take for example: BC Ferries says that the two people on board when the Queen of the North went down are "Presumed" dead, thus leading them to a conclusion: 'We lost two people's lives out there. We need to make the boats a safer place.' Like in this case, sometimes we can learn from our assumptions.
However, you're right, we can't always depend on Presumptions and Assumptions to come to our conclusions. The TSB doesn't just "assume" things, it produces proof.
And that is all you'll get out of me for the next little while.

intresting thread... Overall with the new purchases the company is on the right track.. I would like to see expanded northren service. And i would have loved to see a more independent rethink of the fast cats and possible a engine removal/repower to run them at a economical speed. More planning and involvment with BC shipyards, and a plan to revitalize the bc ship building industry.
