Far East and Orient Lines used to advertise in the National Geographic with their freighter cruises. Lots of the freighters had two to four staterooms that could be booked. My understanding was that they were for the company owners and executives and were booked out because they weren't in use the majority of the time. Some were very basic and others were much nicer. I had thought no one did that anymore with the explosion of cruising. The there was something on TV not too long ago with a profile of a couple who always travel that way. I don't recall who they were sailing with though. The ship had a comfortable sitting room and stateroom for the guests use. The freighter had tiny swimming pool that was for the crews use but no one apparently used it so the couple had almost exclusive use of it. They ate in the officers mess but had the option of eating in their suite if they prefered. They always sailed one way and flew the other. There was no site seeing on the way they just sailed from one port to another. I think it took two weeks.

I've considered the merits of travelling that way, perhaps to Alaska.
