Evergreenfleet, I've been holding my breath in anticipation of your book's release for some time now... should I exhale? I'm turning a rather queer shade of blue, here.

Hee, sorry...updated info from my publisher is "Sometime after March." However it is now listed on the Arcadia website (http://www.arcadiapublishing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=0738530875) which means it should be out sooner than later. I just wish they'd put the photo of the cover up.

Should be...they'll be at all the major booksellers, Barnes and Noble and the like, and you should be able to get it on line as well.

Hey Evergreen: Great Book! My copy arrived in the post yesterday. Yes, it turned out to be the "collectors edition" with the MV Kitsap-Chippewa error. There were lots of photos that were new to me and the quality of the print is very good. I do hope you consider bringing out a new updated edition from time to time. So many of the past publications on the subject were never updated with new information and photos.
Have you considered adding a written history of each vessel in addition to the photos? That would certainly be a interesting topic for future research. Do you know what type of archives are maintained by WSF on the history of each vessel? Thanks again for the wonderful publication!!!

That would certainly be a interesting topic for future research. Do you know what type of archives are maintained by WSF on the history of each vessel? Thanks again for the wonderful publication!!! First of all, I'm glad you enjoyed the book, and I appreciate all your kind words. As for the other questions...updates would be up to Arcadia. I personally would have loved to see more history in the book, but Arcadia is very structured in their Images of America series, so I was limited to thier format. I did try to pack as much into the photo captions as I could. As for WSF archives? There are none really to speak of. A friend of mine who did a project for the WSF recently said their photo archives consisted of "some slides in a box." At one time there was a librarian for WSF whom I assume kept track of some things, but I-695 cut that position. Not to "dis" WSF, but once they're done with a vessel, that is pretty much it. For example, one of the paintings of the Black Ball packet ship that used to hang above the forward stairwell on the Kalakala was fished out of a garbage bin after the ferry was retired.

Washington doesn't seem to be very good at keeping history. My brother owns a 72 Dodge Polara that was a Washington State Patrol car and we tried to do some research on what emergency equipment was on the car. Like I said, tried, we can't get a hold of anyone on the historical committee. I guess they have a photo archive, but I can't get near it.

Hey, reading the good review of the book, I am excited to get my copy. However, this is the message I got from Amazon where I did order it: "We wanted to let you know that there is a delay with some items in the order you placed on May 13 2006 08:53 PDT (Order# 104-9707593-8088726). Please visit the Order Update page in Your Account at the address below to approve the delay for the unavailable items:" More information was then that I´ll have it around end of August beginning of September. Well, I think this is according to a saying here - good things take time, great things take more time

Hey, in the worst case - and I know that nowadays simply anything is possible.... I will soon get a message that they won´t deliver stuff to Europe "due to security-matters" or such ! Well, I will wait and see, is though pretty odd that they sent me that note despite I placed my order on 13 th May.

I'm quite the Johnny Come Lately it seems, but I just wanted to pass on that I finally acquired a copy of your book, Mr. Pickens. Your comments were insightful, and the photos are spectacular. I just wanted to let you know that I thoroughly enjoyed your book, and to thank you for all of your hard work.

Whow, I have received the book earlier than Amazon has promised to me and it´s a great one ! The one who has written that book has done very good research and has very good photo-material in it, too - and the sort of photos I didn´t see anywhere else. I can simply just recommend it

I finally got around to getting a copy this afternoon (it was one with the Kitsap-Chippewa error). Awesome book.
I liked that picture of the damage to the Elwha after the storm in late 1990... never seen actual pictures of the damage (I did visit the shipyard in early 1991 and much of the damaged wall had been removed by that time).

And most of all, I'm glad everyone seems to have enjoyed the book! Yeah, the poor old Elwha took quite a beating...she's down in the drydock at Dakota Creek right now getting sand blasted in prep for painting. I'll get down their this weekend to get some photos of her and try to get them posted early next week.

Is Chapters (in Canada) carrying your book? The one near me didn't have any. What title should I be looking up?

You mean the Chapters in Strawberry Hills? Try the one Downtown, it might have it. If and when we do find a store around here that has it, I'll be in line to get my hands on a copy.
