Fairplay daily news:
eBay auction for Washington ferries
SEATTLE 19 November – Washington State Ferries has selected online auction site eBay to sell two of its unused ferries, the Snohomish and the Chinook. Tim McGuigan, Legal Services and Contracts Director for the ferry operator, told Fairplay that the two vessels are high-speed passenger ferries that went into service in 1997/1999. Each has a speed of 30kt and is capable of carrying 350 passengers. The ferries are powered by four engines and McGuigan said four additional engines are available for purchase if the buyer is interested, together with a wide variety of other components. He also said the two ferries may not meet existing emission regulations in the US. According to a survey, the both ferries are in good shape, McGuigan said, however some exterior work, such as painting, may have to be done. The ferry operator is planning to set a minimum, hidden, bid for the auction and the “quick buy” option will not be operable. Both ferries were built in the US and so meet the requirements of the Jones Act. The ferries are expected to be listed on eBay by the middle of next week. Washington State Ferries has previously sold a ferry; the Tyee; on eBay. McGuigan was unsure whether buyers would be able to place a bid for both ferries or if they would be sold individually. He said this decision would be made by eBay. If the internet auction is not successful, Washington State Ferries will probably use a broker to find a buyer.
