The Malaspina is replacing the Columbia this week. In the first week of May the Summer schedual begins, with 2 weekly sailings on the Bellingham run.

I am looking forward to my next trip south in early June on MV Malaspina. She has spent most of the fall and winter at Todds in Seattle having a major overhaul and upgrade. It will be interesting to see how it turned out. MV Malaspina continues to serve as "the First Lady of the Alaska Marine Highway System!"

I came down to Bellingham this week on the "First Lady of the Alaska Marine Highway System. " She looked sharp and sparkled after her recent maintenance and overhaul period at Todds, Seattle. One item of interest was posted on a large wall display honoring her long history of service.
MV Malaspina took about 9 months to construct at the old PSS&D yard in Seattle in 1962. My oh my!!! How times have changed.
To be fair, I did not research how much time was taken to plan for the construction of the three Blue Canoes, but the actual construction of the vessel was completed quickly and with few problems.

The AMHS ferry MV Malaspina has reported a problem with a steering rod cylinder in BC waters and is stopped while temporary repairs are being made. She is currently the only vessel assigned to the Bellingham-SE Alaska route as the MV Columbia has been taken off the run with electrical/generator problems. MV Malaspina's arrival in Ketchikan will be delayed because of this problem.

Quick bit of Trivia!
What was the Malaspina's original name?
Answer: Taku. The Malaspina and the Taku were being built side by side (so to speak). When the Malaspina was nearing completion a fire broke out that caused a delay in completion. Since the first ship to be completed was to be named Malaspina, the vessel that was going to be named Taku, was re-named Malaspina, and visa-versa!

According to the proposed AMHS 2008 Summer Schedule, MV Malaspina will be removed from the Bellingham run and return to Juneau-Haines-Skagway for day boat service. There were many vocal complaints made at yesterday's public hearing on the schedule. Several called for the AMHS directors to resign over this issue and the very late release of the schedule. The official schedule will apparently not be available until mid to late February.
There should be more heated debate as the State Legislature goes into session next week.

To reduce fuel consumption and shift cost savings to additional fall-winter-spring sailings on several routes, AMHS announced that MV Malaspina will replace MV Columbia on the Bellingham route from mid September through the end of March 2009. The MV Malaspina had originally been scheduled for lay-up during this period. She is slightly smaller than MV Columbia, but is more economical to operate, especially during the slower winter months.
In May of this year, MV Malaspina was removed as the 2nd vessel for summer runs to Bellingham. She was reassigned as a day boat serving Juneau, Haines, and Skagway. Do to Coast Guard regulations, she cannot make international sailings.

The MV Malaspina sailed from Ketchikan to Bellingham Wednesday night. She is replacing MV Columbia on the Bellingham/SE Alaska run for the Fall/Winter/Spring schedule for AMHS. MV Malaspina was taken off this run during the summer season to serve as a "dayboat" between Juneau, Haines, and Skagway.

I'm trying to locate some drawings of the Malaspina that show the crew areas, engine room, bridge, etc. I've taken three trips on her and it always amazes me how the crew manages to "hide" from the general public and appear out of no where. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, well, I would expect that as "restricted areas" by definition of the Homeland Security Agency, those drawings are going to be hard to come by. As someone who works in the industry, I can tell you that you can pretty much forget about obtaining this information, and asking about it is going to attract attention from said agency that I can GUARANTEE you don't want.
Am I paranoid? Yes, a little. But the theoretical threat is something that I live with every day.

The current AMHS schedule list a voyage on 2 June from Ketchikan to Prince Rupert, B.C. via the MV Malaspina. She then departs on 3 June for SE Alaska ports. If correct, this will be the first landing of that vessel in the B.C. port in several years. MV Malaspina and MV Columbia are both non compliant with SOLAS. MV Malaspina will be heading from Prince Rupert to Skagway to begin her summer day-boat service between Skagway, Haines, and Juneau. During the winter months she operates between Bellingham and SE Alaska with no stops in Prince Rupert.

In July we had some great weather. Actually it was a pretty good Summer! One day, I decided to follow the Malaspina on her trip up Lynn Canal, heading from Auke Bay (Juneau) to Haines. Here (finally) are some of those shots. Hope you like! Here are some scans of the Malaspina's brochure. Sorry, the scanner was cutting off about 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch. Also, a couple of major changes that were made during their last overhaul are not reflected on here. On the Boat Deck the Multipurpose Room / Play Area are now the Movie Theater and Gift Shop. Also a portion of the Cocktail Lounge was portioned off as a Computer Workstation. Enjoy! ~LeC
