I think the Taku ran aground in Prince Rupert in the 1970's? And the Q.P.R helped out.

Yes, that was a very long tiring, exacting day as we bailed out the good old Taku. The big fir tree branches sticking through the broken windows in the bar/lounge were very impressive.

This from yesterday:
"MV Taku has canceled the sailing to Prince Rupert today, Friday January 13th and has returned to Ketchikan due to a mechanical issue. AMHS engineers will be addressing a repair plan this evening and updates will be released as more information is available. Alaska Marine Highway Staff members are contacting affected passengers. For more information, please contact your local ferry terminal by dialing 1-800-642-0066."
There's been no word as to what the problem is and the online sailing calendar has not been updated to reflect the schedule changes, probably because most of the reservation staff are off for the weekend. This means that the terminals will have to handle the passenger reshuffle.

Looks like the mechanical problem will keep the Taku out of service till Tuesday.
From the Schedule Changes page on the AMHS website:
"MV Taku has canceled all sailings for Sunday, January 15th and Monday, January 16th due to a mechanical issue. Alaska Marine Highway System staff will contact and rebook affected passengers. Taku is expected to return to regularly scheduled service on Tuesday, January 17th with a 2:45am departure from Ketchikan bound for Prince Rupert. For more information, please contact your local ferry terminal by dialing 1-800-642-0066."

Nice shots Mileagephoto.
Anyone know the reason why Taku wasn't stretched like her sisters? Taku's renovation sees rather cursory compared to Matanuska and Malaspina.

My best guess is the same reason that the Nanny and Burnaby weren't lifted. They just didn't have any need to renovate the Taku to that extent.

Adding to what The Canadian Viking suggested is that the Mat and Mal can not get into as many places as the unstreched Taku. Increasing her size would reduce her flexibility for the fleet as a whole, and reduce the number of ports that AMHS could serve, as the smaller LeConte and Aurora had not yet been built.
We had the Chilkat, of course, but she was more of a shuttle than ferry.

While scanning miscellaneous negatives belonging to my brother, Mr. DOT, I came across one showing an unusual ship in Vancouver Harbour. So I scanned it so as to have a better look. Then I realized that what I was seeing was one of Alaska's 'Blue Canoes' far from home. I studied this photo hard & concluded that this must be the missing forth sister that was to be named the Kuskulana.
This is , of course, the Taku. Why was it was in Vancouver? Some maintenance, I guess. The 1990 date shown is a guesstimate. Any info that anyone may have that can give me a more firm date & reason why she was in Vancouver would be welcome. Mods, did my pictures get intentionally removed for a policy violation, in which case I apologize and would love to know what I did wrong, or was there a technical glitch in which case I'll re post? Thanks. Your photos were not documented as being removed. Must have been a technical error. Please re-post. Sorry about that!

Mods, did my pictures get intentionally removed for a policy violation, in which case I apologize and would love to know what I did wrong, or was there a technical glitch in which case I'll re post? Thanks. When I saw your post yesterday, all the photo links were already broken. I just assumed that your upload or link didn't work, and you'd eventually see it and fix it... Thanks for noticing them. ps: no moderator has edited your post, and so the way that it appears really is the way that you originally posted it. - I'm assuming that you check your post, after posting, to make sure that it turned out how you hoped it would (that's what I do with all of my posts, and I usually find a typo and sometimes find a photo link that I messed up on)

They weren't showing up for me earlier (when I chose "Open image in new tab", I got a message indicating that hot linking wasn't allowed by the site the images came from), but they do now.

It's actually weirder than that. Everything worked last night, but not when I checked an hour or so ago. I made a new post, then found that the old post had started working, and deleted the new post. I've been trying to figure out if there is something wrong with my website, but not seeing anything there. I don't know what happened. And you original old post is still not working for me.

Ok, I must have some sort of hotlink protection imbedded into one of the plugins on my WordPress site. I'll sort it out, and try this later. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'll delete my posts previous to this to clean the thread.

Oh, for Pete's sake. I will need to set up a third party to upload some pictures to, as apparently my website is more protective than I had intended. This will take a little while. In the meantime, Pop has some pictures of the bridge and engine room of the M/V Taku on his page from the 50th anniversary celebration of the AMHS. Please feel free to check it out while I sort this out. Cheers!

I saw the Taku many, many times on my recent Alaska trip. Let's start with the ship getting ready for the summer season at ASD, doing a lifeboat drill as HAL's Volendam passes her.
