Thanks for that schedule, M. LeConte. This is the year that Seattle takes a huge lead over Vancouver in terms of departures. Last summer, Vancouver usually had three ships leaving both Saturday and Sunday, and now we're down to two. Seattle has three daily departures Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Vancouver usually has one on Friday. Hopefully this is the 'low water' mark for Vancouver, since I don't believe Seattle can handle more than three ships at a time, and most of the lines want weekend departures. Disney arrives next year, and we can only hope the overalll Alaskan market doesn't soften further. I wonder how many jobs we'll be losing, both on the waterfront and among suppliers, with the exodus of ships to Seattle.

With the decrease in sailings, there will no longer be any cruise ship activity at Ballantyne Pier, at least according to the preliminary schedule. I see that the pier was completed in 1923 to handle freight. Anyone know how long it had been handling passengers?

It looks like Canada Place is the only treminal being used this year. we lose about 260,000 passengers this year
Seattle has already lost 2 ships for the 2011 season The Ms Rotterdam( Holland America) and The Royal Princess (Princess Cruises) Seattle has 3 berths and are at capactiry on weekends
This trend may continue until the tax situation in Alaska changes
In 2011 we pick up Disney (100,000 passengers) and an enroute stop with Crystal Cruises

Can the larger cruise ships (1800 passengers& larger) navigate the Inside passage from Calvert Island North or do they have to start in Milbanke Sound & travel North?
Including any part of the Inside Passage would a big plus for cruises homeporting in Vancouver -most of the Seattle based ships travel up the West Coast of the island on the way up to Alaska- because the scenery would be a good selling point for us.

On the Norwegian Sun we came down through Milbank Sound from the strait on the last day of our cruise and we sailed past Bella Bella too! Northbound we sailed up the strait and then inland past Gil Island and up Grenville Channel.

The first of the 4 cruise ships heading up for charters during the Olympics is on the way Holland America's Statendam sailed north today from San Diego, and will pick up the pilot just after midnight on Tuesday, 12 January.

Holland America's Oosterdam is one, and there is also another Carnival Corp vessel, one of the Fantasy Class I think. These 3 will be at Ballentyne and housing security. The odd ball is the one headed to Squamish for workers accomodation. She is now called Mona Lisa, but was here on the coast for a few seasons as Princess's Sea Princess-not to be confused with the current vessel of the same name. She started out as Kungsholm and after her Prncess cruise stint was transfer to the P & O and was known as Victoria.

I see the Statedam is just off Neah Bay right now 11:20pm Monday night on her way to Vancouver!
A news article
Passengers who booked a Mexican cruise on a Carnival luxury liner may not be ecstatic.
The 2,052-passenger Carnival Elation normally operates three-to-five-day voyages from San Diego to Baja, Mexico, but will sail empty when it cruises to and from Vancouver in early 2010.
It is one of three ships chartered for $76 million by the RCMP Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit to house more than 5,000 cops and troops before and during the Winter Olympics. The deal was announced Tuesday.
"The ship was scheduled to be in service and we are contacting guests sailing on those voyages," said Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen.
"They will be offered alternate ship or sail dates or can opt for a full refund of their cruise fare."
The RCMP also chartered two ships from Carnival's Seattle sister company Holland America Line. The 1,916-passenger MS Oosterdam and 1,258-passenger MS Statendam will join the Elation at Ballantyne Pier.
Meanwhile, lawyers for the RCMP are waiting for a Washington, D.C. judge to decide their March 31 application to dismiss the breach of contract lawsuit by Cruise Connections Charter Management.
The company sued last November after the RCMP sank the original $57 million contract because of a dispute over payment, taxation and currency exchange. The RCMP claims it is protected from lawsuits by the U.S. Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act.

It looks like the Norwegian Star wont be up here for the Olympics as she is still in Los Angeles right now Tuesday Feb 9th. And I am pretty sure she was scheduled to be in Victoria today so yeah I guess that plan is sunk. Kind of annoys me, some two bit company from Alberta they would let charter the ship for the Olympics then find out there wasent enough bookings for them to go ahead. She could be doing cruises to Mexico now that I assume they would of had to cancel for the Olympics.

There already are cruise ship that go to Ice Strait Point Alaska at least I think there are. I would think Klemtu would be to small for a cruise ship to sail into unless they were tendered out side the bay.

The cruise that I was on in 2007 stopped in Icy Strait Point . All ships tender there because there are no docking facilities. It is just a small Indian fishing village..

When I was on the Norwegian Sun we sailed up the Inside Passage out into Southern Hecate Strait went inland again by Gil Island for Grenville Channel and out into Hecate Strait again off Prince Rupert. Southbound we came down Hecate Strait and right down till about Millbank Sound and by Bella Bella southbound all the way from there the way the ferry goes to Port Hardy.

The Volendam goes southbound through Hecate Strait then Into Milbanke Sound passing North of Bella Bella to Fisher Channel then finishing off ton the Ip Ferry route.

Actually when we were on the Norwegian Sun in Grenville Channel I could see a Holland America Ship way in the distance behind us following us and behind her was the Northern Expedition! It was a smaller Holland America ship.

It may have been the Volendam. I think the 2 ships that do Round trips from Vancouver may take that route necause live ships had the Zuiderdam as far up asthe west side of Price Island.
