This is highly problematic for AMHS. The Tusty is getting very old consideration the conditions in which she operates. It sounds like many of those Aleutian communities are really in a bind because there is no other way to get heavy equipment in or out. What, exactly, is the issue with getting the Kennicott into some of the Aleutian chain ports? Doesn't fit in the berth? Elevator not compatible? Too much draft at low tide?

Too bad I can't post the actual image here, but someone posted an incredible picture of MV Tustumena in Dutch Harbor a couple years ago. I thought it might be a nice diversion away from hearing about her ill health at the moment. MV Tustumena in Dutch HarborI also just realized from the builders plaque that she was a Spaulding design. Since she lacks stern doors and windows, she is probably the only one that is missing the signature bullet windows at the stern that all the other Spauldings seems to have.

I can't find exactly HOW she's too big for many of the ports, if it's length or depth. Per the AMHS website, the Kennicott draws 3 feet more, and is some 86 feet longer. She is also fairly fully booked, which prevents her from doing more on the part of the run she CAN do. I will let someone else decide if this means they are opting to do less essental service with her or not.

I thought it might be a nice diversion away from hearing about her ill health at the moment. Nice find. As for her ill health at the moment, the good news is that after this mess is done, she should be good to go for awhile. I don't remember which article it was, but something I have read in the last few days suggests that this major overhaul should see her through 5-10 more years, and we should be able to get a replacement built before that happens. Because of Alaska’s rather unique need for a long hull without a full superstructure, it may be one of the last chances this generation of naval architects has to build a really classy new ship. Although I really like what they are planning for the ACF, 300 passengers for an almost 300 foot long vessel on 2 passenger decks with no cabins give a lot of room fore and aft of the structure. I suspect our new mainliners, when they are built, will look a lot more like a “modern” ferryliner.

Once I got past the fire-breathing rage at the headline, I noticed the last line of the article.
"The state has made replacing the Tustumena as its No. 1 construction priority, and is expected to hire a naval architect by the end of October."
What do you suppose they mean by No. 1 priority? Did I miss something with regards to the Alaska Class Ferry?

The link is not working. They must have re-did their website and changed all the links. So, the Rusty Tusty is STILL not fixed?

She's back in service. She missed the sailing season for the chain, but at least the areas closer to the mainland have a boat again. The good news is *knocking on wood* that she should be in good shape for the next 5-10 years at this point.

TL/DR version; The Tusty is showing her age. The AMHS is operating her under voluntary restrictions as to the type of weather she goes out in, the USCG still has confidence in the vessel, but replacement remains a priority.
As an aside, I rode on her for the first time this summer. She was sailing through dead-calm water, so I can't comment as to her weather qualities, but watching her load and unload, she is an amazing vessel with well laid out passenger accommodations.
EDIT: Apparently Proboards ate the actual link to the article. juneauempire.com/state/2016-07-30/after-architects-disturbing-find-southwest-alaskas-lifeline-faces-deadline-born-age

There is a tsunami warning in Alaska this morning, following the massive earthquake near Anchorage this morning.
I checked the AMHS vessel-finder, and the only ferry in the area is Tustumena which is underway at Kodiak Island, which is part of the tsunami warning zone.
Stay tuned...and here's hoping the best for Anchorage and south-central coastal Alaska.
