Please Help Haiti-they might give her a freshing up, but a coat of paint would not required as no one is paying to stay aboard. She is housing those non security personel that are working in Whistler. No spectators, no officials, no athletes; just those that are employed up there on a temporary basis.

It's easy to get to the beach to take pictures of Mona Lisa. Just drive the Olympic Expressway to Squamish, turn into town at the Olympic McDonalds, drive down the main street to the end. Turn left 1/2 block and right at the railway tracks. Proceed to the end of the road again and follow the really bumpy dirt / pavement to the waterfront. Walk beside the beach to the location of your choice for the picture, point and, voila, another Kodak moment. Enjoy!

hey, escapg2, Could send a url of a map of the location? The place I got on Google maps after following your driving directions looked nothing like a beach. There were some industrial buildings on the waterfront, but no beach...

LOL Squamish isn't known for its nice and sandy beaches. The Nexen Beach, which is where Excap took his photos from, is well known for the Chlorine plant that was once there that was run by Nexen Inc. Since then, the plant has been removed which left quite the polluted mess behind. But I'll admit it was a bit of a favourite spot to go to when I lived up there. Some of you might recognize it if you ever watched the TV show "The Guard". Nexen Beach used to hold the false Coast Guard Base year round for the show. The location of it is a little tricky. Excaps directions sum it up quite well. Using an internet service like google maps to find it doesn't work too well, because of the fact that you have to take a bumpy dirt road out there. If you take the time to go there, you should be able to find it no problem because I think that there's some signs that direct you along the way. I took my little Prelude out there a few times, preferably when it hadn't rained in a while so that the massive potholes weren't full of water. Follow the link to focus on the Nexen Beach on google maps. Nexen Beach top left (I don't know why I can't center the image right on the beach..). The docks you see are condemned, so don't bet on getting good views from the docks. maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=49.684658,-123.164184&spn=0.004248,0.01134&t=h&z=17

Hey all!
I was lucky enough to be hired to cook for the athletes in Whistler's Athletes Village, and after being told we would be staying on the Mona Lisa cruise ship I had to do my research! I'm glad I stumbled forum because there are some really great pics on here!
This is going to be my first time on a cruise ship of any kind and I am extremely excited. I can try and snap some interior shots for you guys if you are interested! I fly out there next week.
Cheers!

When new, her interiors were noted for having so much woodwork; I think 12 different types used inside. The original cabins, not those added mid-life, have beautiful woodwork as well. During the early days there were wood polishers as part of the crew!! The dining room retains many etched glass panels from her days as Kungsholm. She is getting old now, and after the last 10 years being operated by a "budget' cruise line, I'm not sure of her condition now.

Hello, had a nice cruise on Mona Lisa last summer in Norway. Some slideshows including pictures from the interior are posted on Youtube: www.youtube.com/TorTasKBMaybe you like it. At least you can get a first impression of her. I envy everyone who may live on her while being engaged at the Olympics. Best regards from Cologne, Germany

Youre welcome. Its a pleasure for me to know the pictures are noticed all over the world. And of course I am rather curious about the reports and pictures some forum members will give here who are guests of her in Squamish.

Well...I finally made it down to the beach to take my pics of the Mona Lisa. At first I thought is was going to be a challenge, but it was far from that...as you drive down the main strip you turn left on Vancouver street then right. Keep to the paved road until you get to a private gate, that's where you turn left onto a gravel road that will take you to a gate for beach access (opens to the public between 6am-10pm). Mine are very similar to the ones at the top and the weather was great...cloudy, bright enough....lotsa dogs there with there owners...Jeff

Any word as to when this Great Lady will depart Squamish? She is a real beauty!! She remains a beauty today even without her forward funnel... I am not sure about this but I recall hearing that the ML would be around for the Paralympic Games also. I have an aquaintance who has been living aboard her during the Olympics. He was a volunteer official at the nordic ski events in the Callaghan Valley.

The Oosterdam was off Victoria around 6:30pm this evening as I managed to see her as she sailed by! Wonderful, Karl! It's kind of neat to see cruise ships in this area at this time of the year, outside of drydockings. When I come for the Para-Olympics, I'll be seeing a different waterfront this time as these ships will be gone from Vancouver and doing what they are designed to do in warmer climates. Hopefully, the MONA LISA will remain in Squamish for the Whistler-based support personnel of the P-O.

The Norwegian Star also departed Esquimalt Tuesday morning bound for Los Angeles. I looked last night and the Elation was just off Neah Bay with the Russian Tall ship sailing behind her.

Any word as to when this Great Lady will depart Squamish? She is a real beauty!! AFAIK she will stay in Squamish while the Paralympics. She is planned to leave the port at 03-23-2010. From 04-20 until 05-01 her port will be Kiel, Germany, supposably for refurbishment. From 05-01 she will be chartered the summer long for cruises in North Sea and Baltic Sea. Her last itinerary for the charterer will include even Greenland and the Arctic Sea. www.lord-nelson-seereisen.de/After summer SOLAS 2010 will perhaps cause that she will be scrapped, if the plans to let her stay in Gothenburg will fail. www.salship.se/kung_hotel.asp
