I'm sure we've already discussed amphibious cars on this board before. Not physically possible to drive across to the Island. That's certainly true if you don't bother to drive your car onboard the ferry first.

I'm sure we've already discussed amphibious cars on this board before. That's certainly true if you don't bother to drive your car onboard the ferry first. Then afer that, you're not "driving to the Island". You're "sailing a ferry to the Island" or "took the ferry to the Island", or "cruised aboard a ferry to the Island". Well, not if you happen to catch the next-to-empty 5:30am sailing, and you decide to have some fun zooming around the car deck all sailing.... not sure if the crew would enjoy that, though... Back to topic? I think so.

Due to the service amendment because the Nanaimo is out of service, Swartz Bay is about to get really crowded. Currently, the Nanaimo, Cumberland, Mayne Queen and Bowen Queen are at the terminal. Approaching Swartz Bay are the Skeena Queen and the Spirit of VI. Simple math shows there are more ferries than berths. Looks like the Ickey Shuffle is about to happen!

Does anybody know what the "weather course" is, that is different from her regular route? A weather-course is when you keep the wind at the corner of the ship, not the side. For the 'Wack in the open Queen Charlotte Sound, she does this by doing a series of zig-zags, instead of going to her destination in a straight line. Here is video of this, showing the wake-evidence, from last September on the 'Wack in the sound: www.facebook.com/v/423215968646And here's a quote from a 2009 posting of mine, re my trip-report for a Route-40 adventure:

The Queen of Chilliwack is facing some tough weather up in the North Coast: There's a gale warning in effect in the sector where the 'Wack is currently sailing. Winds to 35 kts with 2-3m seas.

Or into appropriate paper bags provided by the crew.... Thanks for clearing that up. I already knew what a "weather course" was, I just wasn't sure of the exact weather course for the Queen of Chilliwack.
Another example is the Queen of Burnaby, going to Powell River during a storm, she would head for the coast of Texada Island, and make a 45 degree turn heading due north, and then turns back to her regular route to Westview. She would do the same thing going back to Comox in reverse, hugging the coast of Texada Island heading south, until making a big turn heading northwest to Little River.

regarding the wack being unsuitable for the gulf islands service, my brother, wettcoast, has a very evocative shot I took in active pass when she was a new addition to bc ferries fleet, way back then! mr.dot.

WCK & Mr. DOT were discussing the Q Wack's first assignment in BC Waters back in the early 1990's. It did indeed run in the southern Gulf Islands, but from Swartz Bay. It has never, to my knowledge, been the Long Harbour - Tsawwassen boat.
When the Q Cumber came into service they moved the Wack north to Jervis Inlet.
The Wack would not be suitable for the Long Harbour - Tsawwassen service due to its slow speed and much reduced capacity. Its double ended configuration, however, might be useful on a multi-port route like the SGI.

yes my brother, wettcoast, is rite, the wack only did the easy part of the gulf islands route, and it is dreadfully underpowered for the long hbr. run. I find it hard to believe this budget economy basto ferry has lasted as long as it has in these waters, that being said, it's still a lot better built than falcon's greek caddelac! and there was no hst!mr.dot.

I haven't been on the Chilliwack all that much, but when I have its just strictly been when its on the Jervis Inlet route. So I got to see the simple drive on, drive off style of loading cars. I haven't seen her on Route 40, so I'm curious to know how they determine where to put all the vehicles bound for the multiple destinations. Is it similar to Route 9 where cars are essentially turned around at the stern? I've just been looking through photos of the Chilliwack, and trying to guess how she would be loaded for Route 9 destinations. All I can say is, I'm sure glad we get the Burnaby and not the Chilliwack because her car deck doesn't leave you with much options.

The long known rumours are true. I think many local residents aren't going to like this, Especially truckers, sport teams, and seniors. I'm sure somebody is going to complain about why there is no other suitable replacement vessel for the Nanaimo at the next Northern Sunshine Coast FAC Meeting.
On the bright side, I enjoyed my crossing on the Chilli last time she was on Route 17. It was a sunny day though so my thoughts might change in grey weather.
