An update on that previous service notice. The SoBC's out for the whole day now, and the New West is bumping up her sailings to make-up for it.

Pity BCFS can't bring the CR down from Nanaimo to fill in for SOBC.

Pity BCFS can't bring the CR down from Nanaimo to fill in for SOBC. If SOBC has to be out for an extended period of time, would they bring CR down then? SOVI could replace SOBC as the #1 boat out of Tsawwassen, CC would then take SOVI's place as the #1 boat out of Swartz Bay, and CR could be the #2 boat out of Swartz Bay, leaving QNW in her current role, the #2 boat out of Tsawwassen. Speaking of QNW, when is she scheduled to replace Alberni on Route 30? I know it must be soon because RBI shows her on Route 30 the weekend of October 22, 23, and 24th. Oh, never-mind, I looked it up. It appears QNW is replacing Alberni on Tuesday, Oct 12, the day after Thanksgiving. What's also interesting is CC switching places with SOVI, having SOVI as the #2 vessel out of Swartz Bay. SOBC's current affliction may throw a wrench into those plans. We shall see, won't we?

She's pretty much there now, looking like she's heading into berth 1 or 2.

SOBC was scheduled to resume operations at 3pm today but is still out of service and all of today's sailings have been canceled. The ship is currently parked in either berth #1 or #2 at TSA.

Note: This Service Notice applies to the following route(s): - Vancouver (Tsawwassen) - Victoria (Swartz Bay) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update as of 4:25 pm: Please be advised that the MV Spirit of British Columbia is currently operating 81 minutes behind schedule. For traffic updates or more information please call us toll free at 1-888-BCFERRY (223-3779), check our website at www.bcferries.com or go to mobile.bcferries.com on your mobile device. We apologize for any inconvenience experienced as a result of this sailing delay. Copyright ©2008, British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- So right now, as the Coastal Celebration is transiting Active Pass, the SOBC is just arriving at Swartz Bay on her 3:00pm sailing (which actually departed Tsawwassen 4:21pm) According to Actual Departures, it was due to "Mechanical Difficulties with Vessel" resulting in the 1:00pm departure from Swartz Bay departing at 2:21pm. The SOBC will sit at Swartz Bay until her 9:00pm sailing, and the Queen of New Westminster will sail the 7pm out of Tsawwassen (which will actually leave at 8, since she has yet to finish the 5:45pm from Duke Point). Finally, there will be an extra 10pm sailing out of Swartz Bay for the Queen of New West. Does anyone know what actually happened to the SOBC, causing her to fall way behind schedule? EDIT: There is no more 10pm sailing, the New West will do the last round trip to and from Swartz Bay. The SOBC is currently off Ruckle Point enroute to Tsawwassen

The Spirit of BC arrived at Tsawwassen about 8pm. I was at Tsawwassen waiting for the 9pm Coastal Celebration. I could of taken the late 7pm sailing but I dident want to even though it was the New West and she left about 8:10pm. It was kinda crazy at Tsawwassen. All the foot passengers were confused the people who arrived after the SOBC docked at Tsawwassen in berth 5. They had the New West come into berth 3 and offload from Duke Point then they loaded everyone for Swartz Bay at berth 3. Berth 3 has no overhead walkway so I think it was stupid they dident have the SOBC dock in berth 3 temporarily and have the New West offload and load in berth 5 if she was going to Swartz Bay anyways. Same with the Celebration docked in berth 3 and everone was confused. Everyone automaticly thinks cause Victoria is always berth 5 and the SOBC was docked there that's the berth they are using even though people are waiting at berth 3. They dident even use the walkway for the Burnaby tonight as they were loading via the car deck at Tsawwassen!

Considering that this does not seem to affect traffic among the Gulf Islands, I suspect it is a berth issue at Tsawwassen. That is a best-guess though... maybe somebody else has a better idea.

Apparently the issue is the stern car deck doors on the Burnaby. They are not currently operable and thus the vessel is docking 'bow-in' at all ports including Long Harbour.

Update regarding Burnaby stern doors:
They're usable again, but are still being adjusted to ensure that they don't have the same problem again.
The Skeena Queen also made an unannounced sailing to Pender Island tonight, since the Bowen Queen was overloaded. So the Skeenas regularily scheduled 9:00pm sailing to Fulford just had a side stop at Otter Bay. They arrived right at the same time as the Queen of Burnaby, which I was on board at the time.
Sorry, no photos to share since I was steering the 'Burnaby at the time.

Why is the Spirit of British Columbia the only Tsawwassen vessel affected by these winds?

The vessel has to back out from the terminal. It is difficult for her to during high winds.

Furthermore, SOBC is still running on 3 of 4 turbochargers and cannot reach full speed to be able to counter waves and wind.

Yes, to FerryNut's question and also to Viking's original question. - it likely has many names, but it's obviously the trailer that's on the end of the car-deck and used as a shelter for those who can't do the stairs.

It's too bad BCF isn't showing much effort to add lifts on many of the smaller ferries having proper passenger decks, like the PRQ et al. I had the opportunity in trying out the CHETZEMOKA's lift and it works quite well. It serves all four decks (no lift for the Bike Deck, though, as the bikers don't need them). I also used the STEILACOOM II's elevator as well. BCF needs to update many of the smaller ferries to meet the US standards of the ADA.

Fresh off the press: The Queen of Burnaby will not be sailing this afternoon due to the weather. As it is right now, she's only just approaching Active Pass from Tsawwassen, and is skipping the stop at Sturdies Bay. She should have been back in Long Harbour by now, or at least just arriving. www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=336393
