For anyone who has ridden the BC ferries for a number of years and has used their cafeterias, will know of a chocolate milk that was served in a tetra pack. As of lately BC Ferries has switched over to the Dairyland brand of chocolate milk in cartons. I'm trying to find out what brand BC ferries was using originally. It was in a dark brown tetra pack and the taste of it was so creamy and velvet like. Its not Island farms, nor Beatrice, or Nestle or Hersey's.

I believe it was Lucerne.

It was and has been Dairyland for many, many years.
I remember the old tetra packs (250mL), they were brown and a picture of a glass with the chocolate milk in it. Those were made prior to Dairyland being purchased by Saputo in 2001, so I assume the formulation changed when the amalgamation occured.

Lucerne chocolate milk from Safeway is still superior, in my opinion:) The only one I've found that is still 2% milk... so it's creamier and tastier.

On Sunday, I was aboard the Queen of New Westminster and as per usual with any ferry lunch, I wanted a Nanaimo bar. I did not find any in the refrigerators and then asked a cashier if there were any and he said they were out of stock. One person behind me said I should petition to Mr. Hahn. After that trip, I found out from NewFlyer there were no bars on the Queen of Alberni and Coastal Inspiration.
What the heck happened to them? Was there some sort of dispute on pricing? Is there any story behind the disappearance?
I will be sending off a complaint letter but would any of you like to be added to the letter as a full opinion of the group to have them reinstated?

Hmmm, I'm not sure if they have gotten rid of them. When I was commuting to the mainland they seemed to always have them on the Renaissance and Oak Bay. I can even remember purchasing one not too long ago as well.....
Maybe it's another one of those things that varies per ship....
But I certainly will look a little closer next time I'm on a ferry.

Seriously, they are pure sugar, and they simply make one's teeth hurt to eat them, and then if the ship rolls a little bit, we start re-dying the carpets.

Hate to rain on the parade here, but Nanaimo Bars are a pretty lousy desert. I hope they replace it with something good instead!

Seriously, they are pure sugar, and they simply make one's teeth hurt to eat them, and then if the ship rolls a little bit, we start re-dying the carpets. Sales of very sugary items are down and more healthful "sounding" goods are on the upswing. I say "sounding" because in many cases they are as bad for you just disguised better. Put a granola topping on something with just as much fat and sugar and people think it is good for you . I wonder what the shortage is? The recipes for Nanaimo Bars I know are all basic items. But then commercial kitchens always have some unusual items - often to extend shelf life. Maybe trans fat is getting harder to come by . Krispy Cream donuts are an example of changing consumer tastes and softer sales. I haven't checked their stock lately but it is no longer the darling it once was. Timmies still brings out the gooey and sweet but notice how many fewer inches of shelf that donuts occupy. Sales of bagels has dramatically increased and whole grain muffins are now stocked (still have as much sugar as a piece of cake ). The Clam Chowder isn't as good as it once was but as long as they don't mess with that....

One thing I know for a fact that is gone is the classic Cinnamon Buns. They've changed it to the Bread Garden Cinnamon Knot, which are on display in the glass case with all the other Bread Garden Gas Station food garbage. Of course I've tested it out..........exact same as the ones you find at Chevron....Boooooo

I guess for the Cinnamon Bun ceremony to be still enacted, it would BYOB. Bring Your Own Bun. Yuck for the prepackaged stuff.

My brother, Mr. DOT, has lent me copies of the menus used in the upper deck restaurants aboard the Queen of Esquimalt & the Q of Victoria. I have scanned the front and inside pages of the Esquimalt menu which dates form when she was first stretched in 1969. I will show you the Q Victoria menu cover later... front cover inside #1 The choices - inside #2 The back cover featured profiles of marine traffic that one might pass while dining aboard a BCF vessel, flags of Canada, BC & the BCF house flag. There are also coats-of arms, and the insignia of officers aboard the ferries (i.e. how to tell the Captain apart from the chief engineer). Lastly, at the bottom is a sentence advising that "A souvenir copy of this menu may be obtained from the cashier at a cost of $1.00".

I mentioned it to my Mom and she remembered she would always order one or the other. There always was Salmon also available or sometimes Halibut, but maybe that was a special. Dessert of the day was 90% of the time some sort of pie. Thanks for posting that.

Not to get anyone's hopes up or anything, but..... I was on the Queen of Nanaimo yesterday and the Second Steward was in the cafeteria straightening the desserts in the cooler. I commented on the absence of Nanaimo Bars throughout the fleet, and she told be that she received a memo earlier in the week which indicated that Nanaimo Bars would be back in the near future! Now we wait.........

Come to think about it, did they have trans fats in them to where they had to rework the making of them in order to comply with new BC Health codes for 0 trans fats?
