After vigerious debate on new ferries, vessel configurations, engines, routing, it comes down to the last remaining subject that hasn't been debated in passionate detail: Sunshine Breakfasts.. Paul: will you be posting a chart of the path that the Sunshine Breakfast takes, as it passes through someone's digestive system? ;D Actually, we all know that Sunshine Breakfasts disappeared from the BCF menu a long time ago. They live on in our memories and in those people that choose to believe that they still exist.

OK, since Mrs K asked me just what a Sunshine Breakfast consisted of, and since I embarrassingly could not answer, could someone cast some, um, sunshine on the matter?
Thanks....

The Sunshine Breakfast was basically BC Ferries version of Eggs Benny, although instead of English muffin, they used brown toast. Then it was topped with Ham, BC Ferries' bucket eggs and a rather lemony tasting hollandaise sauce.
It was a heart attack on a plate but it tasted really good. ;D

Fish and Chips were introduced a couple weeks ago on the major routes... This fish is a huge improvment over the one that used to be served a few years back. It is an actual fillet of cod, not pieces of fish pressed into a mould and battered. It comes in its own paper container with wax paper liner printed to look like newspaper. It includes a slice of lemon and a generous portion of tartar sauce, as well.

I actually had the Fish and Chips the last time I was on the Renaissance when she was on route 1! It was actually pretty good and the amount seemed to be just right!

Looks OK but I would rather it be served on proper plates. I realize that serving the Asian noodle dishes in boxes, and the fish and chips in newspaper, is a major part of the marketing strategy (also saves labour when it comes to dishwashing) but I just don't find it appetizing. I alwats request that my noodle "boxes" be served in ceramic dishware (never been a problem) and I will do the same when I order fish and chips. I'm just funny that way...I'm also one of those people that eats a slice of pizza with a knife and fork

The Coastal-class ships now have a menu video board, to give a tantalizing show of the food that is literally "just around the corner". Here are video clips so that you can taste the experience too. ======== Breakfast, including "Fruity Goodness" www.facebook.com/v/460319108646Dinner: "the need for the cola" www.facebook.com/v/460322643646-------------- Here is my favourite: And related to food, here is a sign at Tsawwassen, promoting the T-Quay:

The Spirits have this video-menu board too, now. Not right in the cafeteria ordering area, but in the cafeteria seating area.

You get a free small fountain drink with quite a few of the Coastal Café entrées. I've found that this is all of the Triple-O's (White Spot) items, and a few others. The chicken strips meal is a notable combo that does not include a drink.

I always find it quite funny that the announcement mentions the roasted chicken in the Coastal Cafe, as if is some sort of specialty... ooooo.... roasted chicken.

My friend came over from Nanaimo for the weekend....rode the Coquitlam over and the Oak Bay on the way back. He also works for the ferries but hasn't got any work since Thanksgiving. Anyway he reports that pizza has been dropped from the menu...on both ships the pizza ovens and warmers have been removed. As well, the recently-introduced fish and chips are also gone. But he says we can now buy poutine....so much for healthy choices I will miss the pizza....I always thought the vegetarian option with its whole wheat crust was a less unhealthy choice and I found it quite filling for a reasonable price.

I've been taking some pictures of ferry food over the past year or two, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. So here's a thread dedicated to photos, and photos only, of food on ferries. I might move some of my older posts of food here, if it's not done by a moderator with nothing else to do... ;D So, on route 3, they now have holiday-themed eggnog cheesecakes. They're really, really good I recommend trying it. EDIT: my other food photos: The Queen of Alberni's galley: Lunch aboard the SoVI: Lunch aboard the Frances Barkley:

:)what a contrast to the white linen meal served on the WAC Bennett dogwood fleet of the 1960's, for $3.50, albeit those were those 60's dollars!mrdot.

I was on the 11am SOVI this morning and they had all the lunch menu items plus one breakfast item up. I dident think they served breakfast on the 11am unless they just forgot to take the sign down.

I don't know how things work on the SOVI, but on the SOBC's 11am, most breakfast items are not served. Only scrambled eggs and toast, and maybe waffles are served, but everything else isn't, and lunch items are mainly served on that sailing. In the Pacific Buffet, they try to make it brunch, by keeping a few breakfast items out, while trying to balance out lunch items at the same time. When the Spirits dock after their 9am sailings, the front line will change the signs into the lunch menus, and usually dont keep breakfast items on there. However, they will still serve limited breakfast foods on request. I remember being the Queen of New West on a 10am sailing from Swartz Bay a while ago, and just after we got out of Active Pass, they made an announcement for last calls for breakfast, as they will be changing the menu to lunch shortly. Sure enough, when I checked the Coastal Cafe, everything was lunch.

They might of just forgot to take it down cause now there is an empty space seeing there is no more Fish and Chips. Be nice if they did serve breakfast on the 11am sailings. I know I usually dont want to eat lunch at 11am, lol! Unless I had an early breakfast.

That was probably the case. Well, if you go to the Buffet, you can make your own complete breakfast with oatmeal, fruit, cornbeef hash, scrambled eggs, toast and muffins. Occasionally, if the crew makes too much food from the previous sailings, they will put it out in both the Coastal Cafe and Pacific Buffet. So if you get lucky, you could still get a decent breakfast on the 11am.

Something new in the Coastal Cafe... Blueberry tarts drizzled with a lemon-mint glaze. I bought one of these in the Sitka Coffee Place on the CI last weekend. They're quite good! BTW my friend who is Chief Cook on rt2 says the Butter Chicken might be making a comeback.

BTW my friend who is Chief Cook on rt2 says the Butter Chicken might be making a comeback. That would be great if that did come back. I've found the Coastal Cafe menu has shrunk as of late. There hasn't been anything new and exciting added to menu lately either...
