Ouch! $3 million on repairs. She's really buggered.

I my have missed something. What exactly are the Surrey's problems?

From the News Release:
On May 4, the Queen of Surrey suffered a crankshaft failure which caused one of the two main engines to seize. The vessel was removed from service for repairs and another C-Class ship has been servicing the Langdale route since that time. The Queen of Surrey was originally expected to return to service by the end of June, however it has been determined that a major engine component, a bed plate, cannot be repaired and requires replacement.

Ouch! That's a very interesting modified schedule for those routes. I sure don't want to be travelling to Langdale on a Friday afternoon, considering the 2nd boat doesn't do its first run until 550pm! Moreover, Friday afternoons to Nanaimo won't be any better without a 3rd boat between 310pm and 8pm. I can see the sailing waits piling up.

So I could buy myself a ticket from Horseshoe to Langdale, then from Langdale to Departure Bay? Will this be on BCF's ticket-buying site?

I like how detailed the report is. Theirs actually some credible information in there. Very cool, and very smart for BCF to release the real reason for a problem like this. Instead of the usual "mechanical difficulties" crap they try and feed us.
Cheers,

So I could buy myself a ticket from Horseshoe to Langdale, then from Langdale to Departure Bay? Will this be on BCF's ticket-buying site? I seriously doubt it. It's not like they're doing a direct sailing from Langdale to Departure Bay. As a walk-on boarding at Langdale, you might be able to purchase a HSB-Nanaimo ticket on board the vessel if you knew it was going to proceed to Nanaimo on its next sailing out of HSB. It would allow you to stay on the ship at the Horseshoe Bay end, but it doesn't seem like the sort of thing BC Ferries would advertise, since that isn't the purpose of this shared vessel arrangement.

And according to RBI, the Oak Bay is doing a trip to Langdale Fridays at 2330! Quite a variety of ships on Rt3 in July for sure!

Hopefully all the other Cs stay in service.
I would think this could put a bit more pressure on route #30

I would think this could put a bit more pressure on route #30 If another Major Vessel Bites the Dust, The New West will probably be off Route 1 in a heart beat so the CI can replace the Downed Vessel. I'm almost surprised that BC Ferries didn't suggest taking route 30.

I'm almost surprised that BC Ferries didn't suggest taking route 30. Say the Queen of Oak Bay decided to go kerflump. Could they move the 'inspiration to where she rte. 2, then bring down the QoBurnaby to sail with the 'Alberni, have the QoChilliwack sail Comox-Powell River, then just get the Nimpkish or something else small to do the Discovery Coast route? If BCF had one of the Albion Ferries, they could have it replace the Nicola, then both Nicola AND Nimpkish could work the Discovery Coast passage... Would that be to much of a disturbance? Probably, but I think it could work. Oh wait! Would the Queen of Prince Rupert still be legally allowed to sail? If so, she could replace the Queen of Chilliwack on the Discovery Coast..... hm?

What does this have to do with the topic at discussion? Look two posts above mine. I was thinking about what would be done if that happened..... EDIT: There. I put a 'quote' in the aforementioned post.

I'm on the Queen of Coquitlam on route 3 as I write this.
Anyways discussing with my friend there were some renovations done to the berths at Horseshoe Bay. Were any of these relating to accommodating the super-Cs?
Langdale has a more open berth design so I assume even though the Super-Cs are wider (Yes it's not much) there aren't any issues?

All of the major terminals (Swartz, Tsawwassen, Duke, Dep. Bay, Horseshoe Bay, Langdale) were renovated prior to the Super C's delivery to allow them to use at least one berth.

Copy that then. I don't recall any major renovations but I imagine it wasn't too much work at Langdale. Not to mention the Super Cs arrived a little while ago now and my memory isn't the greatest.

Is the Queen of Surrey still returning this coming Thursday in time for the long weekend?

My sources tell me she should be moving to Langdale on Sunday for sea trials and storing. So all going well, she'll be back in service Thursday morning.

SiiTech is now showing the Surrey back home at Langdale. The final Sunday of the revised rt3 schedule has had some changes. The Coquitlam is running almost 1 hour behind so the CR's last scheduled trip to Langdale has been cancelled with the Coq doing it instead. And it looks like the Capilano will sail the Coq's 2235 sailing from HSB and the 2340 sailing back.
I'm glad I had a chance to ride 2 of the Renaissance's 3 round trips to Langdale in July!

Yikes...I guess there were too many cars left behind at Langdale for the Capilano to handle because she is staying in dock at HSB, and the Renaissance's 2330 sailing to Nanaimo is cancelled... she's now heading to Langdale instead. So the Cowichan will take back to DB the traffic that would have otherwise been on the Ren. As of 0010 SiiTech is still showing the CR in dock at Langdale. Talk about a late night for the Nanaimo crews. I wonder if Miss Surrey knows how much trouble she's caused!

I usually travel back and forth to the Coast a number of times a month.
Fortunately my schedule somehow aligned such that I didn't have to endure the down-a-ferry summer schedule this July. Heading up on Thursday so hopefully I'll be on the Queen of Surrey. Then I'm doing 2 or 3 trips in the next two weeks.

Queen of Surrey spotted on sea trials in Howe Sound today: QoS was spottted making 19 knots heading south between Bowyer island and the mainland. Nanaimo crews will very likely appreciate Surrey's return to service: CR and Cowitchan didn't tie up until 3am this morning after last night's SNAFU.
