holey crabapple! I did not see this coming! Did the props fail to go into reverse then, or was it a crew error? I wonder if she has a big dent on her like in the case of the Queen of Surrey (or was it the Alberni?) way back when?
Good thing this didn't happen on the long weekend! That would've been pure hell for travelers. It probably still will be, because many are taking extended long weekends, ie. taking a vacation day from work on the tuesday.
Why aren't they running the Bowen Queen from Tsawwassen like they usually do in the summer?

Here's the official BCF news release about the incident:
Immediate Release 10-040 August 3, 2010 QUEEN OF NANAIMO EXPERIENCES HARD LANDING VICTORIA – The Queen of Nanaimo, which services BC Ferries’ Tsawwassen – Southern Gulf Islands route, experienced a hard landing at the Village Bay terminal on Mayne Island at approximately 7:30 am this morning. Four passengers and one crew member were injured as a result of the incident and are being attended to by emergency medical personnel. The vessel sustained damage to the rubbing strake and bow door frame. The terminal sustained damage to the wingwalls, which are part of the berthing structure, as well as to the ramp apron. Village Bay has two berths, so the terminal remains operational. While the Queen of Nanaimo undergoes inspections and repairs, the vessel will remain temporarily out of service for at least the remainder of the day. Customers travelling between Tsawwassen and the Southern Gulf Islands are being re-routed via Swartz Bay. BC Ferries is not speculating on the cause of this incident and the Company will conduct an investigation into the hard landing. BC Ferries will issue an update about service to the Southern Gulf Islands when more information is available.

Why aren't they running the Bowen Queen from Tsawwassen like they usually do in the summer? Because there is only a crew on the Bowen Queen from Thursday thru Monday. Couldn't they get them out there, at least for tomorrow? Oh no, I feel a furious rant coming on... please ignore all of the following, unless you are part of BC Ferries' senior management: Well, BC Ferries, you know what I'm going to say to this: Why didn't you keep a surplus V-class ferry, huh? We've already come across incidents god knows how many times this year where it would've come in handy yet NO, you dump them all off to fishing canneries and Chinese do-nothing companies who buy a ship then leave it to rot back here in Canada where it's not their problem!... (no racism intended to the Asian population). Back in the '90s, there was usually a surplus ship on hand, that being the Queen of Esquimalt, if I'm correct. I guess since BCF was turned into a company, you guys decided you didn't want to pay to maintain a surplus ship. I hope that incidents like these will finally teach you a lesson, and get your filthy little feet back on track. furious rant status: over.

I can see the Bowen being rushed into service asap to relieve any traffic. I can also see a minor vessel possibly being deployed if repairs take longer. Is the Tachek available yet? Or is the Nimpkish around?

I'm done my ranting, so now I will start asking more questions:
Is the Queen of Nanaimo going to be brought to Deas Dock?

We all have access to the same news release. ======= Also, regarding your rant post: Are you expecting some debate on your points, our should we all just "bite our tongues" and let you have your rant moment. ....just trying to keep this thread productive.

Sure hope our Forum mate (we all know who he is) wasn't aboard the QUEEN OF NANAIMO on a watch this morning. Spilled coffee and maybe some fender benders (that's why they ask motorists to set their parking brakes). Hope the injured are OK up there. This is definitely not a way to start a morning.

One little mistake by Global News: They reported that the Queen of Nanaimo came from Swartz Bay, when actually it obviously came from Long Harbour.

According to CTV, BC Ferries is now classing this accident as "severe." Also, it was reported that the Queen of Nanaimo crashed at 5 knots, and that there was a problem with the propeller. Some of the injuries included a woman, who is a ferry employee at Village Bay, was standing on the ramp, and she was sent flying backwards. Another woman in the cafeteria had a skull fracture, after she slammed her head into a pole upon impact. The rest of the injuries were believed to be foot passengers standing at the bow of the ship on the vehicle deck. They were sent flying off their feet. Finally, a man on the phone with CTV also said that the ship bounced off the dock three time before coming to a final stop at the dock.
All these facts courtesy of a witness reporting on CTV.

Preliminary cause identifed in ferry crash
MAYNE ISLAND/CKNW(AM980) Marcella Bernardo | Email news tips to Marcella 8/3/2010
This morning's hard landing by a BC Ferry at Mayne Island may have been caused by ropes getting caught in the propeller.
Chief Operating Officer Mike Corrigan says the suspected cause has been found, "He couldn't reverse the engines to slow the engines down and we believe the reason was there was a significant amount of rope in the propellers --most likely crab rope or prawn rope trapped. The propeller wouldn't be able to obviously to rotate if there was a number --a bunch of rope in the propellers, so we believe we found the reason, but we have to continue to do some further checks before we're 100 per cent sure."
In all, six people were hurt... including one person who suffered a head injury.
Corrigan says the Queen of Nanaimo may be out of commission for at least a week.
