From the RCMP bc.rcmp.ca/ViewPage.action?siteNodeId=50&languageId=1&contentId=16448Investigating Thefts from Sept 4 and Need Public Assistance Share | File # 2010-7115 2010-09-08 12:34 PDT
In the early hours of September 4th, 2010 an unknown suspect or suspects entered the Queen of Surrey which was moored for the night at the Langdale BC Ferries dock. The suspect(s) removed an ATM from the passenger level and attempted to load it onto a waiting boat. The ATM broke loose, fell into the water and the suspect(s) fled the area in a small zodiac style boat. The ATM was located and recovered later that same day.
The Sunshine Coast RCMP are also investigating a theft of zodiac from the Smith Road area of Langdale that occurred overnight on the same date. It is believed that these incidents are related.
The public's assistance is being sought in identifying any person(s) that may have been in the areas noted above during the hours of 0100hrs - 0330hrs on September 4th, 2010. This request for assistance would include any boating activity observed in the entire Gibsons/Langdale areas during the hours in question.
If anyone has information on these investigations please contact either Cst. MARTIN or Cst. MYLYMOK at (604)885-2266 and quote file 2010-7115. Information can also be supplied on this and/or any other criminal activity through Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

I kinda wonder: Why doesn't BC Ferries lock the exterior doors to the Queen of Surrey during the night?

This shows that BCF lacks in nighttime security, but seriously, whatever next?! Does BC Ferries need to hire Night Watchmen for their major vessels? Perhaps they'll have to assign a crew to Night Watch.

Perhaps they'll have to assign a crew to Night Watch. We had to do that when the 'Swift was anchored. A couple times, a speed boat would come up alongside and take pictures, but that's the most of it. Why they were out in the middle of the night, I do not know...

The ships just aren't left siting there with the keys in ignition. There's probably night shift engineers, cleaners and other folks on board. That's why the doors aren't locked. These guys must of either planned this out quite well and still failed or were just really lucky not to get caught before they got as far as they did.
I don't think BCF has to necessarily change their policy regarding vessel security. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone breaking into a ship and stealing anything before. I think these guys were just lucky.
Cheers,

If they had been successful in loading it into the boat/zodiac, then, maybe, they would have gotten away with whatever cash was in the machine.

It kind of strikes you a bit like Laurel and Hardy time. I would think the ATM might be a bit heavy. Even if they hadn't dropped it, perhaps they might have tipped the Zodiak over if the they didn't load it exactly right. I would be surprized if the ATM didn't have some type of tracking device inside anyways.

I know, it's not funny. But it kinda is. Sure wish we had the "drop" on film...
