A few shots from mid November 2014, when I took the Denman Island route. On the west shore of Denman Island - Here's a dusk shot of the work then in progress at the Metcalf Bay Ferry District: - Straight ahead for the new berth, curve to right for the current berth And earlier that day, when I was waiting in line at Buckley Bay. - with the very old narrow ramp

The cable ferry docks at Buckley Bay and Denman West appear to be finished. There is no construction equipment at Buckley Bay. For some reason, I didn't notice that the plans eliminated any berth structures... no wingwalls, no dolphins. Looks like the new barge will simply butt up against bumpers, and be held in place by the cables. Might be interesting in thirty knot winds, but of course, BC Ferries' tank tests took care of that... right?

Looks like the new barge will simply butt up against bumpers, and be held in place by the cables. Might be interesting in thirty knot winds, but of course, BC Ferries' tank tests took care of that... right? Thanks for those photos. I also was surprised by the lack of familiar berth structures. But then I realized that this cable-ferry concept is a whole different game from what is done everywhere else on the coast. So of course there are no wing-walls or dolphins, because why would a barge that is cable-secured in its lane require anything else to stay in place. There is no excessive drifting, only the wobbling allowed by whatever slack the guide cables allow. And of course all the security of the barge depends on the reliability of those two guide cables. Take a risk and ride the ship in the weeks before the guide-cables are due for replacement. On a sort of related note, my video "Cable Ferry 101" has been getting consistent multiple views each week, in recent months. The content in the video is relevant or interesting to some people, perhaps in context to this Denman Island experiment. Here it is again:

Here is BCFS's new webpage for the Sointula berth upgrade project: HEREThere are 2 drawings on the page. Things that I found interesting about this: - the ferry is coming from the wrong direction in one of the diagrams - a diagram has a nice CG rendering of the Co-op grocery store and the Malcolm Island Inn, both show their distinctive looks. - completion by Summer 2015 (before, middle or end ?) - the result will be a combination of old and new. Old trestle from the roadway, with the new ferry berth being the only destination on the trestle, and it being perpendicular to the shoreline. The old situation was a ferry berth and a jetty platform sharing the trestle, with the berth at an angle to the shore. Project scope: Minimum disruption to service is expected:

The water view of the new berth on the Denman Island side of Baynes Sound. - May 14, 2015 Old and new Old and new. Tried and untried by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr ------------ Yes, the cable casing is blue. Corporate blue. (the white slugs were too small to see) Are the guide cables alone going to be enough to keep the ferry square with that berth?

A new video from my recent trip to BCFerries Land; a video shot aboard the Tachek of a sailing from Heriot Bay-Whaletown, sped up 10X Well done ! I enjoyed that. But too bad for you that you had a poor weather day, but you can't control that. We're you able to stay at Quadra or Cortes for a night or two? What is the closest WSF comparison to this route, regarding the type of crowd and the type of island atmosphere? just curious. Thanks for sharing this.

I think by comparison, the WSF equivalent of BCFerries' Route 24 is either Point Defiance - Tahlequah or Vashon - Southworth.

Thank you for your positive feedback I spent the night on Quadra, however, I did not explore the island at all. (except for the ferry terminals. I explored those quite extensively.) What is the closest WSF Comparison? It's really hard to say. No WSF route really parallels route 24. However, if I had to pick the one WSF route that is most similar to 24, I would say Point Defiance.

Here are some views of the new berth at Sointula, built in summer 2015: - seen by me in early January 2016. re Sointula's new ferry berth: One of the best features for people like me, is the photo-op location on the outside of the passenger waiting room. The outdoor area around the back of the waiting room is a non-smoking, outside area, and it gives nice views of the berth and ship: - you can see the area here in this photo, with the yellow rail on on the side of the waiting room building . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr ------------ The view: . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr DSC09612 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr --------------------- A view inside, at some of the cheese-grater seats: . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr

BC Ferries has stated that the old berth will be left in place for five years. This new structure will be on the south side of the cable ferry dock.
