Well see, if you had a thread: 'The Best Photos for B.C. Ferries to Use'; this would not be a problem. At least it was not this: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8094420.stm

Oh, and a NOTE TO BC FERRIES: I give you permission to use any of MY pictures, as long as there is an easily legible (at least 11pt. font size) photo credit going to "Luke Tengs". This credit must be close enough to the picture to allow for seeing the photo and the photo credit on a smaller sized computer monitor WITHOUT scrolling. Preferably less than 2 centimeters from the photo on the screen. Also, please DO notify me prior to your using of any of my photos. Thank you, and have a good day ha ha ha, and what was it that you told BC Ferries to do to themselves, back in the summer, when the Queen of Alberni was full? Right, and now they're going to be extra-careful for you with font-size and proximity? Too funny. ;D I'm doin' it for the people Mike. Think of the people. They want pretty pictures of pretty ships, and I've got just that, and so do you and most other forumers. I may be a self-diagnosed minor bi-polariac, but I'm not doing it solely for the ferry company. Well okay, maybe not only for the people... there's a bit of glorification in having my photo featured on BCF's site....

Somewhat similar, but with a different ending, was Homer Simpson's run-in with Mr. Sparkle.

Well see, if you had a thread: 'The Best Photos for B.C. Ferries to Use'; this would not be a problem. At least it was not this: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8094420.stmAt a recent digital marketing conference some comments were made that were shocking. The fragulent use of photos by individuals is huge. Some of the dating sites and "meeting" sites were cited and the estimated numbers of people either impersonating someone, using photos of other people including celebrities and models, and other even worse criminal uses is bigger than people realize. If you put it on the web assume it will be hijacked at some point unless you take steps to secure the photo. As far as companies go, it is far easier to steal an image then rent one from one of the bureaus. The photo bureaus want to know how you are using the photo, the size, the subscription number or print run, or how many people will see the photo (or impressions). They then come up with a price for the use. While the net has dropped prices, it can still add up to thousands of dollars in some cases. Sometimes it is just easier to hire a photographer and stage a shot then rent. Easiest yet is to steal. And even worse is when someone then turns around and claims a rental fee for a photograph and pockets the money. Companies most times don't have a clue what is going on behind the scenes when they use a bunch of different graphic artists. The best solution is to develop a long term relationship with a quality graphic artist. Instead of constantly looking for a cheaper alternative, develop a volume pricing scheme and ensure standards are set and met such as a use of photo policy.

An update:
I received an email on Sept.30th from a person at BC Ferries showing me screen-shots of their marketing wall that now include a photo-credit for myself.
-----------
I'm still curious about who the company/individual is who stole our photos from these forum pages and then sold them to BC Ferries. I wonder if that thief is still viewing this forum these days.... I'd love to see some corporate shaming for that thief. ;D

I personally have no problem with people borrowing my photos, however it is a common courtesy to ask before borrowing. I like to know when and where my photos are being used.
If the folks that used our photos for the Media Wall had asked to borrow them, then I'm sure this wouldn't have been an issue.

I'm looking into hotel bookings in Victoria for a weekend in May. One angle I'm looking at is possibly making a booking thru the BC Ferries Vacations site. I received a quote from them, and it appears that the package basically throws the round trip ferry cost (car + 2 people) in for free.
The quotation mentions the following terms: -Ferry route is not interchangeable. If you choose Route 2, you can't go on Route 1 or 30. $50 change fee applies if you change anything after booking. -Cancellation fee of $50 applies if cancel more than 30 days before trip -No refunds within 14 days of trip
The cancellation policy is a tough deal, considering booking directly thru hotel you can cancel 24-48 hours in advance without penalty.
I'm having a tough time determining if booking thru BCFV is really worth it, considering I'll be bound into the booking and the specific ferry route on each particular day.
My question to yonder forum panel is I'm wondering if anyone has made a booking thru BCFV, and if so, what is your overall opinion of it? Are there any 'extras' that you encounter at the hotel, or other items that are worth flagging to others? I'm keen to hear what others might have to say.
Thanks!

I book a lot of hotels, more or less exclusively for my use. Being in the CF training system I've moved around more than many Canadians will in a lifetime (2010 was in every Prov except Manitoba, and missed two of the territories)...
So, I am not an expert, but I feel like I have become skilled at identifying low cost travel.
For any "good deal" you're going to have cancelation policies just like that. In fact most really low cost options are even less flexible; Hotwire, Travelocity, Hotels.ca. Most people should be able to plan their lives sufficiently for this not to be unreasonable. Obviously there is something make you uneasy about this - whether its work, family, or what not.
But, BC Ferries Vacations typically has offered really good deals. I have bought through them eight times (always for other people though) and had no issues. Costs were always comparable to Travelocity, the big difference being that the accomodations were generally 'nicer,' for the same price, with the ferry thrown in for good measure.

I found and took a copy of the 2011 "BCFerries Vacations" glossy book, today while on the Queen of Burnaby. - the glossy book has nice photos of ships and hotels and eco-tourism things. No forum-member photos, as far as I could tell.
It seems that the market for this glossy-booklet is the lower mainland crowd, as most items were Vancouver Island destinations. But there was a good Northern-BC section too.
I'll post photos in a few days, including a nice quote about the "front row seats" on the Northern Adventure.

Glossy advert for 2011 vacation travel. BCFerries knows that printing information and making it available in printed form is good marketing. Even if the information is only applicable for 1 year. It's good to know that truth is still a mainstay of advertising.

I got one in the mail... not sure when I signed up for it;) Maybe when I ordered a Sailpass? Just an update to this. My wife reminded me that I received this BC Ferries Vacations booklet in the mail enclosed with my West World magazine, which is for BCAA members (maybe CAA?). That's probably a good way to advertise, but all the extra copies and multiple smaller versions all over the ferries and terminals instead of the schedules is overkill and a mistake, in my opinion. And now that I take a closer look, the version I received in the mail and picked up on the ferry have a different cover than Flugel Horn's. Not sure if his is an older version or a different version?

I've just double-checked mine, looking for any clues whether I've got the 2010 version or the 2011 version. - I finally found the fine-print (near the end) that says "prices are in effect from May 2010 to March 2011" So I do have last-year's book, available on the Queen of Burnaby last weekend. great marketing. And another gem: - I noticed an item about "Little Qualicum Falls National Park"

Here's an interesting perspective on the BC Ferries travel operation, from the viewpoint of a smaller resort owner who alleges that BC Ferries is distorting the travel market in favor of the larger resorts. She also claims that pressure from BC Ferries for operators to offer cut rate services is in fact a sneaky way to get businesses to mitigate high fares. www2.canada.com/oceansidestar/story.html?id=d055083a-afe4-40f1-979f-7704e47d83a3&p=1
