I took a quick spin on the Evergreen State when she was the 3rd boat at Kingston a few weeks back. I was very impressed with the timing, the Evergreen State wasn't getting in the way of the number 1 and 2 boats. (Spokane and Tillikum.) Anyways, here's a few pics: Here she's coming into Edmonds after waiting for the Tillikum to clear the dock: Docked in Edmonds. It's hard to believe the not to long ago a similar sized ferry (Chelan to be exact) was one of the main ferries on the route! This was my first and very likely my last time boarding the Evergreen from an overhead loading ramp: They did a pretty good job packing the cars in: Not surprisingly the ropes were set back, allowing me to get this shot of the bulkward name: Here we're docking in Slip 2. From what I heard the reason we docked in Slip 2 was because they couldn't lower the overhead loading ramp onto the Evergreen and Tillikum in Slip 1 because the rescue boats got in the way. One of her black benches in the solarium: It's always interesting to see how crews arrange these chairs. They were arranged differently from when I rode her at Vashon: Another shot of the cabin: Coming back into Edmonds: Thanks for another great trip, Evergreen!

Seriously, did the Chelan ever return to Edmonds after 1990? I know summer of '90 was the Hyak and Yakima...

I couldn't go to Edmonds that time but I love these photos.

The latest maintenance schedule has the Evergreen State listed as "decommissioned" effective this week. Interesting, but I'll believe it when I see it. They've staggered down this road before. "We're retiring the Evergreen...whoops, just kidding! I guess we still need her." Lately, I kind of figured Evergreen wouldn't be retired until Chimacum enters service, but perhaps WSF has decided they no longer need her. As for the rest of the Evergreens, I expect Klahowya to be retired after the 4th OC comes online, but I hope they keep Tillikum around until the next flight of new-builds. It would still be useful to have a vessel of that size to fill in for Sealth on the SJI Inter-island route, or as a backup at F-V-S if needed.

The state has been spending the last few weeks stripping the Evergreen out.

I imagine they're taking out all of the useful items - radars, navigation equipment, life-saving equipment, etc. They did the same thing when they retired the Steel Electrics, and most likely with Rhododendron, too.

Exactly why is the Evergreen retired just now? If theres any boat that should be retired now it should be Hiyu.

Not knowing anything about the situation, I'm going to take a stab in the dark and guess it may have something to do with WSF's fiscal year, and not wanting Evergreen on the asset books for 2016. We are rapidly approaching the end of 2015, so that's my reasoning. Whether it's true or not, I haven't a clue.

I agree. If it's for the sake of Pierce County, then the HIYU should be given or sold to PC as their third vessel (ultimate backup) with all maintenance, operations, and staffing shifted to them along with berthing at Steilacoom. Hopefully, we'll get an official statement on the ES's status this Friday in the WSF Weekly News.

As it looks like the Evergreen is actually going to be retired this time, I put together a little tribute for the old E-State, featuring clips from Vashon Island and the Inter-Island route. Enjoy! -Please excuse some of the shaky clips, the camera that I used didn't have the best stabilization and I'm not that great at holding a camera steady.

I can only hope that the venerable Evergreen State has a better fate than her BC counterpart, the Queen of Sidney, both vessels being the first built for their new at the time, publicly owned ferry companies. One doesn't even like to think about the 'Sidney these days.
Every WSF vessel built since '54 has followed roughly the same physical template as the E State, a testament to her efficient design. I only rode her once, a couple of years ago, and aesthetically at least, she did not look her age. Her time has come, but what an admirable record of service.
Here's hoping her retirement is dignified, or, failing that, short.

I anticipate the latter, TBH. I think I'd prefer the scrappers to the Sidney situation... to say nothing of the San Mateo.

Hopefully, we'll get an official statement on the ES's status this Friday in the WSF Weekly News. Nothing about Evergreen was mentioned in this week's Weekly Update, which I just received, so maybe they will mention it in a future update, or maybe not at all. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
