We continue to work diligently to make sure this beautiful gal gets at least another 70 years of useful life/service. She came to me in excellent condition....I am in debt to those that took such took great care of her before my arrival. Our team members are World Class Professionals and we are executing on our plans for a fulfilling, equitable and, sustainable maritime future. The Port of Olympia has been an incredible group to work with. Stay tunedšš There's a slightly better history stateside regarding preserving retired car ferries than here in British Columbia. Still, the failures outnumber the successes, and seem to be based mainly on people having no idea how much is involved, and nowhere near the funds required. I really hope your venture is successful. Definitely... keep us posted, and welcome to the Forum.

***sigh*** ...as well as the more general saga of individual buyers, with very few exceptions, being totally clueless about what owning an old ferry really involves.

Poor 'ol Evergreen. The history of old ferry preservation has tended to sway more towards scrapping, either right away, or eventually, as in the case of Kalakala. I hope Evergreen has a kinder fate, but I'm not holding my breath.

Here's a screen shot of the image from the above mentioned webcam. EDIT: A message from the Port sent to me this morning says "The portion you circled is actually the skeletal remains of the old wharf/Hein Marine dock." It's not part of the ES as I thought it was.

06OCT2021 UPDATE ON THE MV EVERGREEN STATE www.theolympian.com/news/local/article254805882.htmlThe story tells us that the ES is in Langley for about three months for work being performed by Nichols Brothers at their outfitting dock there. Then, on to a drydock in Everett for more work. For her to be in Langley, I kinda figured NB would be doing something on the ES before that latest story came out. I guess we'll learn what would be done aboard the ES on a later date. I think the Whidbey Island news sites might be writing a story, or some, in the coming days.

From aboard the Evergreen State:
Ok, I know the questions abound....
Bottom line....The Evergreen State will soon be the first boat of this size, outside of Europe, to become fully electric. We will be installing a 2.2 megaWatt battery array that will give us 6-8 hours of runtime at 7-8 knots. These battery packs will be in a couple 20ā shipping containers and will be placed on the car deck.
The name of our Venture is āThe Evergreen Sustainability Initiativeā and our goal is to have her running on 100% renewable energy ASAP. We will have both a for profit and a non-profit aspect of our business and our goal is to help to create a critical path for a sustainable world that will ultimately help and support all those things in life that we know and love.
Sustainability of jobs and a solid economy Sustainability of the Environment and ecosystems Sustainability of family/friends/society Sustainability of fuels, propulsion...
Aka.....Sustainability of all the we need, want and Love in our lifetimes and beyond.
The Evergreen Sustainability Initiative and the Evergreen State will provide a platform for āthankingā those groups and individuals that are truly making a difference for our children, loved ones and our descendants. Our sources of energy will come from floating solar panels, launched from the boat, and floated next to the boat in calm waters. Tidal generation and wind power. Think of it as the worlds largest āwind up toyā.
The battery packs will be similar to the batteries used by the Aurora and the Tycho Brahe ferries that transit 46 times per day from Norway to Sweden on electric. The batteries packs are being assembled in Germany and will go onto the Evergreen in later December/early January.
The boat is nearly 100% operational however we have not got our Certificate of Inspection from the US Coast Guard, therefore the recent tow from Olympia to Langley.
At just shy of 1/2 acre of car deck space for a floating silent cruising venue we will be able to turn one end into a smaller concert venue capable of seating up to 1200 people for concerts, plays or various assemblies. We will ultimately have full ārockstar penthousesā up top that will house top name musicians that support our cause and they will be given free use of this amazing vessel in trade for a concert or two. Concert goers will also be able to purchase āupstage passesā to hang out with their favorite musicians in the musicians private āpenthouse suiteā accessible by elevator from the former car deck.
The other end of the boat will ultimately have a massive solarium that will have dining, a park like setting, tropical plants, small waterfalls, pathways and bridges over the lower areas that will grow indoor food crops for our food services.
Food services and fine dining Pools and massage Tender boats and excursions Various ports of call within the protected inland waters
From the 4 DC electric drives built as early as 1931 into a future that will nurture, support and help heal a world that is sorely in need of some good news.
Bottom line: We are in the early phases of a Renewable Energy Renaissance The future looks bright...

That is, without question, the most ambitious plan I've ever heard of for a retired car ferry. Sounds incredibly expensive. I imagine she's had her hull checked out and everything is sound. Transitioning from her traditional propulsion system to electric would seem to be quite a transformation, aside from everything else mentioned. There have been a lot of efforts with retired car ferries, with varying degrees of success, but certainly nothing like this. Thanks for giving us the overview... Good luck.

Dunno why, or even from where (been kinda out of touch with the status of the E.S. lately), but heard through the Bellingham grapevine (aka Reddit) that we had a mystery visitor to the Fairhaven Shipyard pier and I definitely had to go check her out, and indeed.... the Evergreen State makes a re-appearance, the first time for me since 2014. This was extremely unexpected (she was towed here, not under power) and not sure how long she'll stick around but glad to get reacquainted with the old gal'.

I may have to take a trip down to get reacquainted with her again as well as do a Trader Joe's run!

This showed up in my Facebook memories this morning! Did a random with a buddy of mine to primarily ride on the Evergreen State nine years ago. I met members Kahloke and Northwesterner on that trip by chance. Enjoy!

what about Orcas Island? Evergreen's final day (29-June-2014): Final visit to Shaw Island at 12:40 The San Juan County Sheriff's boat escorted Evergreen on her final inter-island trip and up to Rosario Strait on the final voyage back to Anacortes Last time in Friday Harbor Interim WSF Chief: Captain George Capacci on the Apron in Friday Harbor. He was on board for the final inter island sailing and final voyage back to Anacortes. It was great meeting him and talking with him. Water cannon salute as Evergreen left Friday Harbor for the very last time In addition to San Juan County Sheriff, we had a Coast Guard escort as well, along with a flotilla of pleasure boats tagging along At Lopez, the last stop on Evergreen's final voyage, we were treated to a bagpipe serenade which included a rendition of Amazing Grace when we departed They packed 'em in tight on Evergreen's final sailing Finally, Evergreen's last ever docking at Anacortes, with Klahowya, her replacement, in Slip #2, ready to take over inter-island duties. so long Evergreen. You will be greatly missed
