When did they expose the ceiling and change the lighting layout? I know it's been quite a number of years ago.

When she got the original SOLAS upgrades for the Sidney run back in 2001 I believe?

When she got the original SOLAS upgrades for the Sidney run back in 2001 I believe? It was done back in 1988 after it was discovered that the combination of lifting (to fix the inadequate overhead clearance issue) and plating over the girders on the texas/hurricane deck created a top heavy problem and it was decided that anything in the passenger cabin that wasn't needed had to go. Some of the modifications made after 1988 (elevator added in 1992, sprinkler system in the passenger cabin, and the duty-free shop (I don't recall seeing it when I was on her back in 1989) ) probably negated some of the "if it isn't necessary it has to go" changes.

MV Evergreen State makes a scheduled late evening run from Anacortes to Friday Harbor on Thursdays. Her trip from Friday Harbor to Anacortes is not listed on the schedule. Seems like she would leave Friday Harbor around 8:30 or so that evening for Anacortes.
Does anyone know if she takes foot passengers for the FH to Anacortes run? Would like to know as I will be in Friday Harbor and would luv to leave for Anacortes about that time!!

I don't believe they do. At least, as far as I know it's a deadhead trip (positioning cruise if you must). I think it has something to do with time constraints in getting the boat back to Friday Harbor (the crew must be off the boat and all secure in order for the shift to not be considered a graveyard, and taking traffic would likely obstruct that plan).

I noticed that MV Evergreen State is scheduled for at least a month of "dockside work" during the winter season. Any idea as to what type of work is needed?

I see that the E-state will be on standby after her upgrades. The Hiyu is scheduled to still be on the Inter-island run after the E-state is finished. Can the Hiyu handle the Inter-island run, even with the reduced winter travel? Is this a budget cut or saving the equipment decision?
P.S. EGFleet, your signature pic is probably my alltime favorite postcard. I think it is from 1957 as the dock has not been modified to two slips.

I don't know what the logic is behind it... the Hiyu can't really handle that interisland commercial traffic. I suspect it's a budget decision.

Probably a couple of things...one, as we all know, that layup/maintenance schedule is always "subject to change" and two, they probably want to leave themselves plenty of room in case the project runs long...I guess these security upgrades have all been taking somewhat longer than they have originally anticipated. Imagine that. ;D

Security cameras/system to be installed. Is this work/upgrade being scheduled for all vessels or just for those assigned to the Islands? For all vessels. It looks like some security upgrades were done on the Evergreen State earlier this year (those cages on each end of the boat on the texas/hurricane deck). The Spokane and Hiyu have yet to get security upgrades and the Puyallup is getting upgrades as part of the dockside work. All other vessels have received the upgrades.

The dockside work for the Evergreen State has been rescheduled. It's now scheduled for 04/27 - 06/19. After that she's schedule to be at Eagle Harbor from 06/20 - 07/03 (annual maintenance/inspection).
Additionally, she will not be replacing the Rhody when she goes in for work for the 1'st 1 1/2 months of next year. Originally she was scheduled to fill in for the 1'st few weeks (prior to dockside work per original schedule) with the Sealth filling in for the remainer of the time. Then it was changed to having the Evergreen down there the entire time. Now the Hiyu will be replacing the Rhody and the Evergreen will stay up in the San Juans through at least the end of March.

Woo hoo! The Hiyu isn't big enough for inter-island traffic anymore, even in the winter.

Would these changes depend to a large degree on yard schedules? Seemed like that was a major issue this year. Would most of this scheduled work/upgrade of Evergreen take place at a commercial yard or at Eagle Harbor?

At a commercial yard. Why it was rescheduled I have no clue.
On a side note, whatever major work that was going to be done to the Klahowya has been postponed (the latest lay-up schedule doesn't show any commercial yard work planned for her).

Think outside the box... factor in Pierce County. Hiyu's #2 backup for Anderson Island.

It's always good to see the Evergreen back to work even if it's at Vashon

She will be repainted as part of the dockside work. I'm assuming the exterior side walls will be done at a later time. The last time she was repainted was 14 years ago according to this

I wonder why they can't open the galley on the Evergreen when she is assigned to the Vashon/Southworth run? I know she had a nice galley as I have enjoyed a burger, etc. there many times. Does this mean that several galley workers are "on the beach" when Evergreen is working this route? That would be a bummer too.

I think a lot of it has to do with the equipment. I've heard vague rumors of the concesionaires getting a better deal on their medical insurance if the cooks etc. don't have to cope with grills and fryers. Not to mention the maintenance on the ventilation hoods for same is a royal pain.
There's also the angle of 'we don't know how long the boat's going to be here.' I'm not necessarily buying it, but I've heard it trotted out before.
