Those pictures remind me of the soon-to-be good old days--reliable transportation across north Admiralty Inlet. I'll hate to see her go away next week.
That Steilacoom II has sure been a hard working little ferry, I'll forgive her a little rust.

Some more photos of St-II on the Admiralty Inlet route, from the afternoon on Oct.27, 2010. - vantage point is the beach at Hudson Point in Port Townsend. ---------------- St-II photos with these mountains will soon be a rare opportunity: I like how the ship looks different in these next 2 photos, based on how the background camouflages the masts, or not.

She reminds me of the Cumberland. Was not Mr Horn interested in riding the St-II???

She reminds me of the Cumberland. Was not Mr Horn interested in riding the St-II??? Oh I was interested, and briefly considered doing an over-and-back footie trip on the evening when I was staying at Port Townsend. But with 5 ships in 3 days already, I wanted some time to relax with my wife and enjoy the downtown in Port Townsend.

If (just a speculation) the new Chetzemoka has some sort of issue requiring a removal-from-service for repair / warranty work sometime before MV Salish is ready, do you think that Steilacoom-II could be brought-back for a short encore?
What would happen on Coupstone-Pt.Townsend route for say a 1 week service disruption sometime in the next 9 months?

Her departure could have been sooner, though. We have a bit of a wind with choppy waters. People who drive up to the dock here would think: "Oh no, not again! The Keystone run is out of service." I think you're really giving the average commuter more credit for observation than they really have. I once wore green-and-grays to work about twelve years ago for Halloween, and someone actually said to me, "you know, I think that's the first time I've noticed you guys didn't wear those any more." And the old uniforms disappeared around 1985.

I took the next to the last run of the StII from PT last night. The crew was rushing sround pulling down all the WSF notices, the two I talked to say they will miss it. One said yeaterday was only the second time in its tenure there that the Passenger Cabin was full, that, due to the Chtez's ceremony, also that the Passegers are going to get lost in the new space.
The StII is going directly to Todd for a complete overhaul, part of the deal with Pierce is that the boat will be returned in the same condition the State received it in. I don't think they (Pierce) will likely be too open for any additional State Leases, they are looking forward to its return.

The ST2 is due to check into an awarded harbor ("harbour" for you Canadians) hospital on November 22 and should come out January 14 of next year. Among work to be done besides all the outside work and mechanical as well, her seat cushions are due to be replaced as well as new flooring for the passenger cabin and bridge.

.... part of the deal with Pierce is that the boat will be returned in the same condition the State received it in. .... Gee, if the State did that, then it would be the same POS as when the State got it. Some vital improvements were made to that boat, and Pierce County and Hornblower should be thankful.

An update on the MV STEILACOOM II:
She passed Kingston at about 1800PST continuing her southbound journey, as seen on a ship tracking site.
I took the CHETZEMOKA's 1415PST sailing from PT this afternoon to have lunch at the Keystone Cafe. I watched the move crew drive their cars aboard the ST2 from the deck aboard the CHETZY. She left Port Townsend sometime after that time and I saw her at a distance while I was eating at Keystone.

Here are some photos of the STEILACOOM II's ferrywell from Port Townsend on Monday: CHETZEMOKA and STEILACOOM II swap docks. Early morning closeup. From the deck of the CHETZEMOKA on her maiden voyage to Keystone. Later in the day. The two ferries side-by-side. Pierce County is getting their flagship back again, soon. But, not before she visits a harbor hospital to be fixed like new. The move crew drive their cars aboard the departing ferry. Taken from the deck of the CHETZEMOKA on her 1415PST sailing. Ferrywell, STEILACOOM II! STEILACOOM II passing Keystone at a distance. And, finally, the STEILACOOM II made it into Eagle Harbor as captured by this webcam. And, on a night that would feature a big storm. The STEILACOOM II has served her purpose on the Port Townsend to Keystone Harbor at Coupeville run. It's time that the citizens of Pierce County get their ferry back. FERRYWELL, STEILACOOM II! FERRY WELL!!

It looks like Port Townsend and Keystone may be seeing an encore appearance of the STEILACOOM II. Most likely a couple of pass-byes only, though.
Looking at WSF's contracts section, only one bidder has come forth to do the restoration of the mighty mite. This is from Dakota Creek Industries of Anacortes.

Nice photos. Here's one I snapped of her from my iPhone in Eagle Harbor Monday afternoon at the start of what turned out to be the commute from hell. In this photo, we have Walla Walla, Hiyu, and Steilacoom II

Great photos of the STEILACOOM II, fellows!
That Pierce County ferry finds herself in the strangest of places!
She looks small in that slip at Anacortes.
I remember seeing the VASHON for the first time in my lifetime. This was in the spring of 1973. She was in that tie-up slip there. She looked rather small there. I watched the big new WALLA WALLA making her approach to the dock there at that same time. My family and I were going to Whidbey via Deception Pass.
Sooner than we expected, the VASHON was on the Columbia Beach run by the summer of 1973 and was replacing the OLYMPIC. She worked with the RHODODENDRON and KULSHAN then. The Big W replaced the VASHON in the San Juans and ran alongside the EVERGREEN STATE, KLICKITAT, and NISQUALLY. Before, the ES was the big ferry up there.

It looks like a pretty round bottom, for certain. If you take a look at the KdT's, the underwater pofile is almost identical, almost, the difference is the KdT's have those rolling chocks, the STII needs them too, this is how you get a very shallow draft vessel.
The last picture shows how they could protect the props and rudders of the KdT's, pretty simple. I do imagine there would be some loss of efficiency, but I'd rather not have bent components in event of a grounding.
Thanks for the Pics.

I was aboard the CHETZEMOKA when that daylight video of the STEILACOOM II was taken. The Open Ship aboard the CHETZY hadn't been concluded yet. Here's my photo of the ST2 of that very sailing.

I would think she would of wanted to go into Keystone Harbor one last time before she spends the rest of her service life doing the same old boring run.
The boat and the WSF crews did a very good job in a trying situation. Of course, the WSF sailors never get any kudos for a job well done, but they should.

The boat and the WSF crews did a very good job in a trying situation. Of course, the WSF sailors never get any kudos for a job well done, but they should. I say amen to this! The STEILACOOM II and her WSF crews braved the storms the best they could on the tough Port Townsend run, despite the many cancellations they shouldn't be blamed for. Meanwhile, the ship trackers showed her making a stop at Colman Dock in Seattle before continuing south through Colvos Passage. She should be in Steilacoom sometime this evening. Using my cell phone cam, I captured the STEILACOOM II as she passed Kingston from the Edmonds side. Passing Kingston with the SPOKANE coming out of her slip and bound for Edmonds. The STEILACOOM II is seen from the Space Needle cam departing Elliott Bay for the south. I guess we can now say: HAPPY HOMECOMING, STEILACOOM II!We salute the STEILACOOM II for her faithful service she rendered to the citizens of Jefferson and Island counties during the time of need there. Thanks, Pierce County, for the loan.
Added note: The ship trackers show her arrival at Steilacoom at 1845PST.
