It's great to see the MV Hiyu back and doing a good day's work. Many thanks to SS San Mateo for the lovely photos! Just wondering when WSF added the "crash" boat to the upper passenger deck? Welcome back MV Hiyu!

Any idea what the plans are for the Hiyu once she is done her current service? Seems like WSF has had to invest a lot of cash into the Hiyu and Nisqually to save themselves lately!

What edition of the long-range plan was that? The last one I saw that mentioned was in 1999, well before the tax evaders of Washington state (I refuse to call them taxpayers; they want it all for free) revolted. Even if the Vashon-Southworth shuttle were an operational consideration, the Hiyu was considered to be operationally inadequate for the shuttle by most of the people who work the run by 2002.

Hey found this link of a personal website someone has set up. There are some pics of a couple WSF ferries and one of Hiyu I thought you might be interested in taking peak at. www.mitchwild.com/seattle0403.htm

A long range plan that came out a year or two ago did mention the Hiyu being used on the Vashon-Southworth route. As for the Hiyu being inadequate by 2002, that was probably based on the number of people coming over from Kitsap County to work at K2 (which offshored much of their manufacturing in the early part of the decade and moved the rest of their operations off island a year or two ago).

It's been mentioned that she can't be used on routes that cross major shipping lanes. I looked at the COI on Saturday and didn't see any mention of restrictions like what is mentioned in the COI for the Rhody. Did the USCG forget to include the restrictions or can she be used on any route?

I won't be quoted one way or the other on that until I can review the COI for myself. I'm not sure if she has any such restrictions or not; I do know that any route that does cross shipping lanes would have large enough quantities of traffic that using the Hiyu would be like bailing out the rowboat with a thimble... ;D

[glow=red,2,300]HERE COMES THE MV HIYU[/glow]
With the Rhody broken down this morning, welcome back MV Hiyu. I wonder of WSF ever thought that this vessel would ever come back to life? It's good to see this "little giant" back as an active member of the fleet!

I can honestly say that after 2001 I never thought the Hiyu'd be back on the run. As it is, it's still kind of like trying to fill a bucket with a teaspoon. But when the spoon is all you have to drink with, you'll take it.

With the way things are going with the steel-electrics, she'll probably be in service more often very soon.
