So I got a ride on my favorite ferry once again, but for the first time it wasn't sunny when I did. But still much enjoyable! Here you see the Walla Walla just arriving at Edmonds from the small hill above the BNSF tracks. Mount Constance it peeking out of the clouds, but its summit would soon dissapear and has not been viewed again from this spot since then (scary, huh?). MV Walla Walla at Edmonds - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr The cabin all fitted out with the wideness of the fisheye lens: Cabin, MV Walla Walla - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr The Nameplate, lamp and bridge. With the fisheye I could get it entirely in one picture from the middle of the passenger walkway there, but I decided against posting that photo, because we have a good example of it that I took when she came back in service. Nameplate and Bridge, MV Walla Walla - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr This one you'll be unable to get without a wide-angle lens. The bridge and the whole pickleforks, all in one frame, with CAs included if you look at the full-size version of it (I sound like I complain a lot, but that's actually the only actual flaw that I found for the fisheye). More here. Bridge and Pickleforks, MV Walla Walla - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr This was my best shot of all day, brought to you by WSF being nice and getting one more car on the boat, requiring the ropes to be set back. And thanks to a shallow aperture everything is in focus, with minimal distortion. Finally got that shot after a total of 6 crossings on the Walla Walla, so I was extremely happy! Bulwark Name, MV Walla Walla - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr At Kingston, an excellent shot for sure! MV Walla Walla at Slip 1, Kingston - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr From the hill on Washington Blvd, which I barely got enough time to climb before the ferry was departing. MV Walla Walla en-route to Edmonds - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr With her other Jumbo-Spaulding sister and Winslow running mate, the Spokane: MV Walla Walla en-route to Edmonds and MV Spokane en-route to Kingston - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr From the Spokane, when she was back en-route to Kingston. Notice a small Cathlamet arriving at Mukilteo in the background. MV Walla Walla en-route to Kingston - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr
Now flashback to a year ago. It was way more sunny, it was a Friday and that year we actually had that end-of-the-quarter break, so I went ferry riding with a friend. Similarly the Sealth was at Bremerton, the stupidest WSF move ever. But at the same time that I was on the Walla Walla this year, I was seeing her at Eagle Harbor already liking her much. Later that day the bad news of the engine failure was released. Now this a picture from that time last year. This one was actually taken two hours before I was on the Walla Walla this year, but I came back to Winslow two hours later on the other boat, so it still counts. I love the shot from the foot passenger walkway. That's a cool photo. I never usually stop and take photos from the walkway. Would be sure nice to get on those boats one day.

I love this photo because it shows they can still run together.

I love this photo because it shows they can still run together. You mean they get along nicely without fighting over who will be the #1 boat today?

This actually happens all the time on the Jumbos, whether there's wind or not. It was probably intensified in this shot but I've got some on nice days with the same thing:

SolDuc: That picture doesn't show the worst of the waves. I have a video that shows waves crashing up against the bow that I'll upload as soon as I get it edited.

I love this photo because it shows they can still run together. I love this photo simply because they are together. Back in my high school days, running around on buses and ferries for fun, these two were the "brand new" ferries that everybody was excited about. Sure, I still liked the older ones for sure. But there was something romantic about these two. Though I wouldn't have used that word at the time. That, and I like the "layers of activity going on here: Two working ferries, sharing the sea with the playtime sailboat, with the people of town going on about their lives in the background. And all in focus. Well, that, and that ever since I learned that I live exactly due North of the radio tower there, I'm always trying to line it all up from that angle. But I have a question: I know you have really good lenses, but I can't figure out the angle. Too high to be from the beach. Probably not from a boat (again, the angle). Is it from up the hill in Kingston? Just wondering.

So last Monday I took a ride on the Walla Walla from Seattle to Bremerton. No, no photos yet, but I got to shoot a bit of video of her arriving at Colman Dock, unloading, reloading and departing, as well as of the Bremerton departure. Here's the result when sped up 8 times: And sped up 16 times: But I have a question: I know you have really good lenses, but I can't figure out the angle. Too high to be from the beach. Probably not from a boat (again, the angle). Is it from up the hill in Kingston? Just wondering. Woops, I totally forgot to answer that. Must've been busy then! This photo was taken from the hill at Kingston, on Washington St just before 4th St. I used the 70-300mm lens for this one.

Some pictures of the Walla Walla running Seattle-Bremerton on December 30th. First, a couple shots from the Spirit of Kingston. We departed Seattle at about the same time and each ferry then went its way: MV Walla Walla en-route to Bremerton - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr With the Melissa Ann, inbound from Vashon: MV Walla Walla en-route to Bremerton and MV Melissa Ann en-route to Seattle - Washington State Ferries and King County Ferry District by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr Thru shot when approaching Seattle, with seagulls around the ferry: MV Walla Walla approaching Seattle - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr Arriving at Seattle: MV Walla Walla arriving at Slip 1, Seattle - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr Panorama from down low on the rocks at Bremerton: MV Walla Walla at Slip 1, Bremerton - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr In Rich Passage en-route back to Bremerton: MV Walla Walla en-route to Bremerton - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr MV Walla Walla en-route to Bremerton - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr

Fail! At least it won't put her out of service for the next six months. But really, when is it ever a good idea to drill a hole in the bottom of a boat on the water?

They weren't drilling in the water; they were in the boat. The water was outside. Or at least, it used to be. The ship will return to service once the bondo sets.

This isn't as bad as the drive motor incident, but both could have been prevented by being a little more cautious. The maintenance workers need to be more careful about what they do to this boat! And, maybe next time use some buckets and sponges to soak up the water instead of drilling holes.

Hehe. As someone who works in quality and thus deals with failure for a living I'd have loved to be a fly on the wall for that "oh #*(@!" moment... :-)

The Kitsap Sun said they were drilling holes in the Bilge to drain all of the water out, one made into the bilge, the otrher made to the bilge and pentrated the hull. Now she is on the Bremerton run.

Here's the best sounding horn in the entire WSF Fleet (plus it's echo off the islands of Puget Sound as an added bonus), as recorded by yours truly last Sunday (3/23). The horn was blown on request when approaching Bremerton.

The Walla Walla, my favorite ferry, had the chance of being the second ferry to test out my new camera and lens. On my favorite route. During fantastic weather. So yes, needless to say, this post is Photo Heavy!Arriving at Seattle: Wake a bit after we departed, with the Seattle skyline visible in the background: The Cabin: The wake, with the Seattle skyline off in the distance: The nameplate: The bridge: Even more of the bridge, this time with a very nice sunstar: The lifering on the car deck, with a sunstar as well: Arriving in Bremerton: At Bremerton, shooting in the sun with very nice sunstars. Both shots are HDR. Boarding her in Bremerton: New perspectives, with the safety nets and a escape hatch from below decks: Looking up to the bridge from the car deck: A Sun deck lifering: The Sun Deck: To end this post, the bridge and a nice sunstar:

The neighbors at Ship Harbor will attest.

So a week ago on the Walla Walla I did not only take pictures or record a horn, I also shot some video. Here's a video made of small bits taken thoughout the crossing. It includes music and the ferry's horn.
And here's a ferry tour. Please excuse the shakiness in small parts of the video as well as the uncontrolled brightness. Those were my first videos taken with the D7000.

cool tour of the Walla Walla. I am always amazed by how much space are on the WSF inside and out. The Sun Deck on the Walla Walla looks really spacious. Even the inside too. Are the Wheelhouses only accessed from outside??? I really like that class of ship even though I have never set foot on that class of WSF but the remind me of our C class ships. I really hope to get on the Bremerton run some day. It looks like a nice trip!

At the end of each solarium, there's a staircase going down to the main cabin and a door on the side leading to the bridge. The ones on the bridge wings are very rarely used. To move between ends, the crew can either walk along the sun deck or get down to the passenger cabin and back up at the other side, not even getting outisde.
