Another person jumped overboard on the Puyallup, that is the second one this week, except this time it was at Colman dock.

What is the purpose of the Express Bars on the Jumbo Mark II's. Every time I ride on a Mark II, they are never open.

What is the purpose of the Express Bars on the Jumbo Mark II's. Every time I ride on a Mark II, they are never open. They haven't been open since about 2001. The contractor at the time determined they were not moneymakers, and decided to quit staffing them. They are primarily still there because it's cheaper than removing them.

So they were originally red and white? The Tacoma has green benches inside the shelter deck and around the perimeter of the sun deck. The Wenatchee and Puyallup have green benches in the shelter deck an white benches around the Sun Deck.

The Hyak was bad for a long time. Glad they finally got rid of that problem...and the rust. Here's the Puyallup in slip 1 at Bainbridge yesterday.

The Tacoma is scheduled to be on dry dock for painting through mid-September, then the Wenatchee is heading for dry dock after that which will keep the Puyallup at Bainbridge and the Walla Walla at Kingston.

Considering the Puyallup's recent engine troubles, I'd suspect that the next time the Walla Walla heads south, it will be to the Bainbridge run, not Bremerton.

Tokitae? That would likely cause the least amount of impact. You can shift Tilikum to the triangle, pull Cathlamet to Mukilteo and Tokitae to Edmonds Kingston and pull in Evergreen State supplementary.

And it looks like that is what will happen next week! Puyallup is scheduled to be out for repairs, Tillikum to North Vashon, Cathlamet to Mukilteo, Tokitae to Kingston, Walla Walla to Bainbridge. No Evergreen State though. (Normal Vessel Maintenance disclaimers apply.)

That would help having her as a third vessel at Kingston.

That would help having her as a third vessel at Kingston. I think the only way you'll get a third ferry at Kingston is by the use of a KDT. Anything bigger and you'll have ferries delayed landing at a one-slip terminal (Edmonds). I watched the performance of the SALISH on the Kingston run during the Sunday Keystone was closed and she performed well. Vessels waiting to land at Edmonds (waiting for the SALISH to leave) were not delayed beyond reasonable timings. You would have to stop loading the ES (or bigger) before she could be filled to capacity just to keep the scheduled ferries on time. At two-slip Kingston, on the other hand, a Jumbo left the east slip while the SALISH landed at the west slip. When the SALISH left the west slip, another Jumbo arrived in the east slip. No vessel delays there. I think the only way you'll get a substantial sized third ferry on the Kingston run is adding another slip at Edmonds. Also, a terminal should be designed so that arriving ferries can unload cars while docked ferries can load at the same time. Put the ES at Tahlequah and send the CHETZEMOKA to Kingston during this downsizing. A third ferry on the Kingston run has to be small, just like it was during the three-vessel service operations at Columbia Beach prior to 1982. Scoot in and out quickly to keep the main ferries on schedule. TOKITAE + CHETZEMOKA (144 + 64) = 208 cars SPOKANE = 188 cars PUYALLUP = 202 cars

TOKITAE + CHETZEMOKA (144 + 64) = 208 cars SPOKANE = 188 cars PUYALLUP = 202 cars I'd say the third boat "problem" is more about speed than size. The Evergreen State would have to sail empty in the light-traffic direction to have any chance at all to keep up with the other two boats. I wasn't at Kingston the last time we ran three-boat service, so I can't attest to that, but when we did it in 1998 the Tillikum and Klickitat were paddling like mad to keep out of the way of the Hyak. But it was a blast to work the Klickitat for that week.

I would really like to see the change happen on Tuesday, as many people will still be returning from the weekend on Monday; From what I've heard, the swap may happen on Sunday night. Based on the past changes, the Spokane will probably be the #1 boat and Tokitae #2. I remember the Quinault, Walla Walla and Evergreen State/Chelan at Kingston when the Hood Canal Bridge was shut down in '06 or '07. Can't remember how the scheduling worked out though. A couple pics: Anyways, the repairs to the Puyallup are not able to be done while in service as previously reported. Not sure what work is required, but she has to go out of service for them to take place. I hope this is the only hiccup for the Jumbo Mk IIs for the summer.

Too bad the fourth Mark II wasn't in the budget. It would really come in handy right now and last summer with the Tacoma.
