I like the auto deck on the Kitsap because the angle of the ramps is less. The slope starts a little farther back then it does on the Kittitas, making it slightly less steep. It's still steep, but a little better. Huh, I'd never noticed a difference. I missed riding on Kitsap @ Whidbey on Saturday too by about 30 seconds, but that means I got to goto Ivar's. ;-) Are there any differences on the ramps between Kit and Cat that you (or anyone else) has noticed. What about between the other boats?

Why do all Issaquahs rev up before leaving the dock? When I am on the Kitsap or other Issaquah ferry they do that. All the other diesel ferries don't do that.

They're direct drive diesels with controllable-pitch propellers. The mere fact that they're direct drive will affect the noise levels (diesel-electrics seem to be quieter), and the pitch of the propeller blades as they attack the water to move it, will make it seem that they're revving up. And by the way, welcome to our humble forum!

The other day when I was about to board the Yakima to Bremerton, I heard the Kitsap pull in from Mukilteo. They where cleaning windows, the crews cars were on board, and the boat was so lightweight the prop and rudder space was showing.

But I think the super-c class (coastals) win the award for prop showing.

That time the prop was clearly visible.

That time the prop was clearly visible. That's an inherent design characteristic of an Issaquah-class ferry. Sometimes their props can be lifted out of the water. I have photos of the Kitsap's taken in early 2011 showing it, as it was leaving the Bremerton dock. *EDIT* MV Kitsap throwing wake by Loowit Imaging - Steve Rosenow, Photographer, on Flickr That was taken in January of 2011. The propeller blade is concealed behind the prop wash. I'll have to locate the master file directory from the SD card that these were shot on.

Why don't they allow anyone on the top deck of the Issaquah class? I checked the other pages and I can't find it.

Why don't they allow anyone on the top deck of the Issaquah class? I checked the other pages and I can't find it. Apparently for security purposes. I do know that the security gates and cages at the stairwells were not original to them, though. I remember going up there on the Chelan and Sealth with some friends when I was in grade school back in the 1980s. Back then it was just a chain going across the staircase railings and a sign posted saying "CREW ONLY" on the top step. Never stopped anyone, though. One day my classmates and I from the elementary school I went to were on a return crossing out of Seattle back in 1987 (long story, we went on a field trip to the Pacific Science Center and Pike Place Market). Took the Sealth across, and we went topside. A friend of mine ended up losing his hat as we were entering Rich Passage. Personally (and I've voiced this before, to the disagreement by some), I believe that they should open up the top decks on them.

Man, seeing pics of the Kitsap bring back memories back in the summer of 99. I just got out high school and got the opportunity to go work with the engine room crew for a week. What an awesome experience it was. I helped out with a fuel injector swap on the #1 GE main engine. Rebuild and replace a potable water pump. Cleaning one of the centrifugal fuel filter, and many other just day to day stuff.
It was cool to see the Issaquah's when underway only power one propeller (bow propeller set to full feather and just allowed to free wheel) vs. the diesel electrics that have the bow pulling the ship at partial power.
There are days I regret not pursing a career in Marine Engineering and ship propulsion. That still fascinates me to this very day.

From last Friday: MV Kitsap - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr The original car deck configuration is still visible to this day: Today the Kitsap left 13 cars behind at colman dock on the 4:20. A super/olympic would've taken care of it with an extra few spaces to spare. Interestingly they had done loading the car deck ~8min before departure. They could've used that extra time to load the boat more carefully and to get two or three more cars on.

A video of the Kitsap's passenger plant lowering earlier at colman dock: Regular speed:
And Sped up 2x. This one provides a good example of the floating dolphin "swinging" at Colman Dock.

Another video of the Kitsap from yesterday. I filmed the whole sailing. Sped up 10x. Notice how the rocks when she puts into Bremerton:
And sped up 25x:
