Here's a rare one with a B.C. Connection. For some reason WSF chose the then 28 year old Klahowya to represent them at the Washington State Pavilion at Expo. Nice shot of her though.

M/V Klahowya taken this evening... Look carefully at the stack. Notice a colored stripe just below the black stripe? It's the 50-year gold stripe. A close-up look...

Just realized that not only did they rather randomly choose the Klahowya for that postcard, the photo was old enough that it didn't even sport what was then the current paint scheme! It kind of amuses me to discover that the rainbow racing stripes are fast fading out of my memory.

It's been over a year since the last Klahowya post, so I'll help the old girl out. I took a trip from Southworth to Fauntleroy this afternoon. The Klahowya is at the top of my personal favorite boats. I probably wouldn't be so happy if there was a big crowd onboard, but it is usually quiet and peaceful in the cabin on the F/V/S route (well, except a few commuter trips). She has the DOT logo now, which partially covers the gold stripes >( I have noticed that every time I see her, she seems to have one less blue tinted window. It is extraordinarily obvious when there is a blue and clear window right next to each other. Does anybody have/know of older photos of the Klahowya's car deck? I have had a question that I've never asked about it. Along the stairwell path, there are three welded spots that are the same shape and size as the windows that are at the base of the stairwells. Just wondering if anybody knows if she had three more at one point or another. Click on the photo and look at the note that says "note" for the exact area in question. And why did the Tillikum or Evergreen State get windows along the stairwells? IMG_3595 by zargoman, on Flickr

It kind of amuses me to discover that the rainbow racing stripes are fast fading out of my memory. Why did the state start to do away with them? I always loved how the ferries looked with them and I notice that they still seem to use them on their on-board television shorts you see in the passenger cabins (it's in the WSF logo graphic on the trash cans aboard the vessels, too)... Personally *(and I know this is a longshot)*, I think they should bring them back.

The state did away with them in about 1996-1997, I think. They were mostly (if not completely) gone by the time I went to work for WSF. They were done away with because it added to the cost of painting (the two extra stripes were labor-intensive to apply). That was also when the pilothouse visors and the deck railings and screens went back to green.

They were welded over when the vessels went in for their rebuilds. The current ones on the Klahowya were added during her rebuilt. Why the Klahowya has them on the bottom of the stairwells and not the other vessels I have no clue.

Every once in a while one of those random questions pops up in my head. Strange that covering up the windows was part of the rebuild though. The Issaquah boats had theirs left as-is (except for the Chelan) when the second car deck went in and the first stairway was pushed back. Then there is the Issaquah, which like the Klahowya, is the only boat in her class to have a stairwell window at the base of the first stairs.

I love being on a boat at Vashon when the sun is shining at the right angle and the Klahowya or Tillikum is departing. The sunlight shines down at an angle that makes the propeller revolutions visible. It is a very awesome sight and I was finally able to capture a photo of it. It's not perfect, but the revolutions from the prop are visible And then, I caught her and her reflection as she departed towards Southworth.

The Klahowya's servicing has been extended by two weeks. Looks like the Kitsap stays at Southworth and Chelan at Bremerton for another week.

As of now, the Klahowya is a month overdue...anybody heard what's up? Haven't heard anything. According to the latest maintenance schedule (updated 02/22), she is supposed to be back next week.

Looks to be another month from the Moseley update... as I was half-suspecting, the Klahowya is having issues with a drive motor. (I'd figured by the repeated extensions that it was either a drive motor or a main engine crankshaft.)

So apparently one of the drive motors on the Klahowya is bad and the E-State will be transfered down from the Islands beginning on Monday, March 5th. She will be assigned for approximately one month. The E-State will replace the Kitsap. The Salish will replace the E-State as the Inter-Island vessel.

Didn't it take over a year for the Elwha's drive motor? It's been a long time since the Evergreen was at S/V/F.

Didn't it take over a year for the Elwha's drive motor? F F-. I would guess it is not as major as the 2006 malfunction of the Elwha's drive motor. If it is, this could be interesting. And disliked by all else. But I do NOT like the Klahowya.

Good thing that have a spare boat around for the Inter-Island route other than the Hiyu.
