M/V Tillikum during her recent stint on the Edmonds-Kingston route. You know, I didn't even think about the nostalgia value until just now.

It's been days since the last post on this board. Anyways, here are a few Tillikum pics I got during her stint at Ed-King. Here she is at Kingston The ropes were set back, allowing me to get this shot of the bulwark name. Inside the Passenger Cabin Getting ready to Leave Kingston Later that day, I got this pic of the Tillikum and Evergreen. And here she is departing Edmonds.

Couldn't waste the beautiful evening tonight, so I decided to take a little time for myself and drive over to Point Defiance to catch Tillikum in action there. It's not the first time Tilly's been on this route, and may not be the last, but it's kind of a treat to see a non-Kwi-di-Tabil vessel there. I must admit though, I still miss seeing Rhody going back and forth on this crossing. Tillikum at Point Defiance Under way to Tahlequah

I know this post is long overdue because I have been on vacation and elsewhere very busy, but I present to you ferrynut peeps a very unique video that I had to get! So nice to have a non-KDT at Point Defiance for the first time in 4 and a half years. Enjoy the video! My flickr Photos: www.flickr.com/photos/124789317@N05/ Cool video and perspective of these vessels at Pt.Defiance. Thanks for posting 😄

The TILLIKUM has "seen" two ferries named CHETZEMOKA in her lifetime. The first was the 1927 Wooden-Electric. Today, she "sees" the 2010 KDT version. Both with similar sounding whistles with nearly the same tone (My then young ears heard the old CHETZY's whistle in person back in the 1960s to 1972 on the Columbia Beach run). I miss the original interiors of the ES-Class with green tiles on the interior decking, green benches and chairs, and wooden window sills. Too bad they're "clowned" now. Thankfully, the KDT ferries have similar green decor with a nice touch of wood (simulated) paneling on the Saloon Deck (go to the Mezzanine Deck to get a feel of what the ES-Class had with the white bulkheads). The OLYMPIC had green interior tile decking and stained wood trim in her white-painted cabin before these were ruined in her later years.

So I see that the Tilly has left the Islands and has headed south, likely on her way to Eagle Harbor. The maintenance schedule that was posted a few months ago, didn't list her as going in for maintenance for quite a while. Any information on why she is headed south?

She was actually supposed to get a week's vacation in August but the boat shortage postponed that. I suspect she won't be out for long, though.

With all of the talk about the Hyak possibly retiring soon, does anyone know anything about the Tillikum’s future? Hopefully she is not about to be decommissioned too, but I am really not sure at this point. I know she turns 60 next year too....it’s great to see her still fully active, at least in the islands.
Anyway, I haven’t heard anything and was just curious...does anyone know anything about this?

Anyway, I haven’t heard anything and was just curious...does anyone know anything about this? Looking at the fiscal 2018-2019 maintenance schedule posted on this forum, the Tillikum appears to become a standby/ fill in vessel once the Sealth replaces her on the inter island route, after the Kitsap replaces the Sealth at FVS. Not sure how long WSF plans on keeping her after that though, but since she has been so reliable, I don’t think it would be a bad idea for WSF to keep her around for another decade or so as a “last resort” standby in the event of a major meltdown like we saw last summer.

As we all have seen , these schedules change quite alot. The Tillikum is assigned to the FVS route from Jan, 2019 to early Apr. then again for a two week stint at FVS in late May. We shall see. Also every Issy class boat is scheduled for duty at FVS between 2018 & 2019. Never happened before. I hope that they keep the Tillikum in reserve but I think she will be decommissioned in the summer of 2019. WSF hasn't kept a vessel in reserve status since the late 60's. Someone once commented on this forum that a vessel has an assigned crew and they will not do that on a vessel that does not see regular service. I might be incorrect on this though....

Hopefully they can retire it within the next five to seven years. The Supers are really in need of replacing within the next five years. They already have tens of millions of dollars in maintenance backlogs per vessel. So, let's hope that we can get four more Olympic class vessels built in the next five years. But this seems pretty unlikely, though, given the very slow pace at which the first four Olympics were built and the fact that the legislature hasn't budgeted money for four additional boats. Also, I wonder if it's totally okay to have a situation where we only have one vessel left in the fleet--the Sealth-- that carries ~100 cars. Does anyone think it would be a good idea for WSF to build an additional vessel that carries around 100 cars to replace the Tillikum?
