Yeah, I feel like that would be useful. I mean, the KDT’s are kind of limited as far as what routes they can sufficiently serve, but something slightly bigger than those would be cool. Hopefully the Tillikum will stick around for a while....as fast as the boats are being retired, there’s hardly enough new ones coming in. The Klahowya certainly had a quiet ending....

Here is a video I made from my last trip to Friday Harbor onboard the Tillikum coming back from Friday Harbor to Anacortes. Hope you enjoy, it gets wild right off the bat . (the fun starts around 20 seconds)

Well that was really sad to see! The seaplane is supposed to stay clear of all and not impede. If the seaplane had taken off with out delay it would have been a non issue! The Tillikum being the stand on vessel should have realized that Risk of Collision existed early on and taken early and substantial action to avoid a collision. Once you start sounding the ships whistle you should be reducing speed and or putting the brakes on to avoid a collision. I didn't see any reduction of speed or white water off the bow (brakes) off the Tillikum. The seaplane pilot could have some mechanical issues or medical distress or just not paying attention or just not very clever. Not good, definitely a near miss ! I sure like the sound of the Tillikums' Whistle though!!!

When is tillikum going to be assigned to a place other than SJ? Why would you assume it's going to be assigned somewhere else? Tillikum is due to be retired in a few years. It is likely it will finish out its career on the inter island route, or as a reserve vessel if and when Sealth takes over inter island duties.

Luckily, the Tillikum will finish out up at Anacortes with the exception of a drydock work this summer and various inspections. I wouldn't expect to see her anywhere else until retirement as far as revenue service goes.

Tillikum is much more likely to end her career as the interisland boat than a reservist. If there were a breakdown with the Tillikum as the reserve boat, the first move would always be to send her to the islands to relieve the Sealth, a similar size but much faster. Why not just skip a step and leave the Sealth in reserve?

It finally happened. With all our talk about cancelled sailings due to crew shortages across both BCF and WSF, I finally got caught in that last Saturday while heading to Orcas; more on that later. The upside to cancelled sailings is I got to ride on Tillikum from Anacortes to Orcas, a vessel I hadn't been on in several years. It was a fun experience riding on WSF's oldest vessel and I gotta say, the interior is much cleaner and less worn than some of the other ships in the fleet; looking at you, Kaleetan and Yakima. To be fair, Tillikum pulls pretty light duty compared to other vessels, so reduced wear and tear seems to be a natural byproduct of her assignment. I didn't take very many photos, but here are a couple of Tilly's clean cabin And one outside on the picklefork with her 60 years of service banner Now then, on to the events of last Saturday which led to my unexpected trip on Tillikum. We had planned to go to Orcas that weekend and had reservations on the 10:35am MV Yakima sailing to Lopez, Shaw, and Orcas. Woke up early to make the drive north to Anacortes and then checked the ferry alerts to read that Samish's sailings were cancelled due to lack of crew. OK, I thought. that's ok. Yakima is still sailing. WRONG! Next alert came in a few minutes later saying Yakima's sailings were also cancelled due to crewing issues. So, that left Chelan and Tillikum as the only operating vessels Saturday morning. After pondering what to do for a few minutes, we decided to drive up to Anacortes anyway and see if we could board a vessel as walk-ons. That meant removing all of the "project stuff" from our car we were planning on taking up for some work projects we wanted to do at the house. That's ok, I thought. We'll just make this a visiting trip, not a project weekend. So, we drove up and got to Anacortes a little after 8:00. Luck was on our side as we actually got a parking spot in the lower lot near the terminal. At this point, all four vessels were docked at Anacortes. Chelan was in the process of loading traffic to Lopez and Friday Harbor, and left a little after 8:30am I think. Shortly after that, an announcement was made that the late 7:30am sailing to Shaw and Orcas would be boarding, and that's how we got on Tillikum. It had sailed over from Friday Harbor and Lopez. So, double-luck as we ended up getting to Orcas earlier than originally scheduled, even if we didn't have our car. Fortunately, we have family there who could pick us up. Sunday's return trip was much less eventful, and the boats were running, and mostly on time. At least Yakima's 12:25pm departure from Orcas was largely on time. Now then, the story I heard about why there were two boats down on Saturday is that Friday's fog got the boats so far behind schedule, the crews timed out on overtime, and couldn't work Saturday morning's shifts. And, things being as they are, there were no back up crews. Now, I can't confirm this, but that was the rumor.

Always fun to take the Tillikum whenever possible, especially on Anacortes trips. Did one back in May to Anacortes and all-stops back westbound due to a Chelan cancellation, so that was cool too! She'll be out for a bit in November, subbing by the Sealth, and back again for the winter too which is nice.

To be fair, Tillikum pulls pretty light duty compared to other vessels, so reduced wear and tear seems to be a natural byproduct of her assignment. Plus the Tilly's cabin refurb was completed with much more durable materials. The vinyl upholstery is smooth versus the textured stuff on the Supers, which has a bajillion little dirt traps in it; the floor coverings on the Supers are much more porous, too. Stuff just settle into it and won't come out.

Oh and when is it going to be retired it’s the end of 2022 its probably not going to be retired until a we get more boats, so at least 3 years probably longer From the Service Restoration Plan Document:...Hopefully there is room for reconsideration in this- a 20-boat fleet would be very difficult to operate full service with, but the Tillikum is 64 years old and nothing lasts forever, especially in a perpetual salt-water bath...

From what was mentioned over in the Ferries of the Salish Sea group on Facebook, the Tillikum is scheduled to remain in service through at least 2025 and is scheduled to go into drydock in Summer 2023.
