Happy New Year, everybody! To round off the year, lets do a quick survey of this year's ferry memories: - How many times did you ride a ferry this year?
(Note that this is individual ferry rides, so if you did a round trip on rte. 1, then that's TWO trips, not one)
- What was your favorite ferry ride this year, and why?
- What was the weirdest thing you can remark about a ferry ride you took this year?
- What ferry-related occurrence surprised you most this year?
- What was your favorite ferry-related news event to follow this year?
- What was your least-favorite ferry-related occurrence from this year?
- Predictions for next year?
I'll answer first: 1) I did 34 ferry trips this year, NOT including the numerous Seabus trips, which would be at least 18, probably more 2) My favorite ride of them all would be back in November when I experienced the huge rainbow and epic sunset on a route 1 Coastal Celebration trip from TSA to SWB. I think it was the 6pm sailing? 3) I didn't come across much weirdness in 2010. At the time that it actually happened, I think the Spirit belching smoke would have to be it. I thought there was something wrong in the engine room, when really, it was just the ship starting up. ;D 4) Queen of Nanaimo's crash into the Village Bay berth. 5) The ongoing construction of the Kwa-Di-Tabil class ferries. 6) The announcement that BCF will be retiring the MV Mill Bay. Overall, 2010 was a great year of ferry-riding for me.

1. Ferry trips... For BC Ferries specifically, it was approximately 50 individual sailings. 2. Favorite sailing... Spending the day aboard the Coastal Renaissance while it did its Olympic duties. Departure Bay --> Langdale --> Horseshoe Bay --> Downtown Vancouver --> Departure Bay. 3. Weirdest... Being aboard the Kahloke when it decided to play pinball at the berth at Shingle Spit. We sailed into the port wingwall which deflected the ship, causing the bow to be aimed towards the starboard wingwall. If I didn't duck and brace myself against the bulkhead, I would have gone flying... 4. Surprising... Being confronted by a terminal attendant after taking photos of the Burnaby from the patio at Tsawwassen's Berth 2. He told me "photography is not permitted due to Transport Canada regulations". 5. News related... BC Ferries FOI. 6. Least favorite... Queen of Burnaby's continual lack of proper maintenance. On behalf of the staff here at WCFF, we would like to wish everyone all the best in the coming year!

1. Amount of trips: I'd guess somewhere around 40 personal trips. Living on a small Island makes them add up quick
2. Favourite Sailing: Working aboard Queen of Nanaimo as she sailed from Long Harbour to Esquimalt shipyards in October on a beautiful sunny afternoon
3. Weirdest sailing: Standing at the bow of the Queen of Burnaby heading Southbound through Active Pass in the middle of the night, pointed directly into gale/storm force winds and listening to the bell ring itself. "CLANG........CLANG.............CLANG"
4. Surprised occurance: Being aboard the Queen of Nanaimo the day she landed hard at Village Bay.
5. Favourite news to follow: Watching WSF contend with a lack of vessels
6. Least favourite occurance: Seeing photos of the Queen of Vancouver with gaping holes in her superstructure

1. Number of Trips: I'm gonna take a wild guess that I did approximately 40 single trips.
2. Best Trip: Probably the Voyager's Remembrance Day Trip. Definitely a day I won't soon forget. Coming a close 2nd was another voyager trip in October which was the first time I set foot on Galiano Island.
3. Weirdest Moment: Probably goes back to the CirclePac Trip in September. This didn't happen on a ferry but it was during the trip... Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip. Uh-Huh, Uh-Huh!
4. Biggest Surprise: The FOI Request on Vessel Replacement and what would replace them. (Made me realize that our Venerable Vessels aren't long for this World)
5. Most Followed News: Seeing updates on the Chetzemoka.
6. Least Favorite Moment: Probably when the Burnaby wouldn't sail last week in the days before Christmas because of rough weather. (Which was probably because of the "Slow Boat to Little River Incident" on the Chilliwack a few weeks before)

Happy New Year, everybody! To round off 2010, lets do a quick survey of your 2010 ferry memories: [/li][li]How many times did you ride a ferry in 2010? (Note that this is individual ferry rides, so if you did a round trip on rte. 1, then that's TWO trips, not one)
Way too many trips to count. After all, when one commutes to and from work on a ferry, it becomes an every day event. Outside of my regular commute, I rode on other WSF vessels and routes quite a number of times. I did not keep count there, either. I also rode on Christine Anderson for the first time this year between Steilacoom and Anderson Island. My BC Ferries trips were down in 2010; only 8 single voyages on a BC Ferry.[/li][li]What was your favorite 2010 ferry ride, and why?
That would have to be the evening sailing on Coastal Inspiration from Tsawwassen to Duke Point that I did with my girlfriend back in August. It was a beautiful evening, and everything was just right. As it turns out, it was the same day as Queen of Nanaimo's fateful incident at Village Bay. We did not know about that until later in the evening.[/li][li]What was the weirdest thing you can remark about a 2010 ferry ride?
Nothing is coming to mind here. I guess 2010 was a pretty normal year for me, at least in terms of ferry experiences.[/li][li]What ferry-related occurrence surprised you most in 2010?
I don't know if it surprised me the most, but on the Saturday of Labour Day weekend, I was heading to Orcas on a mid-morning sailing, which I expected to be very full. The surprise to me was that they did not fill the ferry, MV Yakima, on what is usually a very busy holiday weekend. The bigger surprise was that Yakima departed on time.[/li][li]What was your favorite 2010 ferry-related news event to follow?
The on-going development, sea trials, and deployment of MV Chetzemoka, Washington's first new-build in ten+ years. I even enjoyed the bantering back and forth here on this forum as it related to Chetzemoka's issues.[/li][li]What was your least-favorite ferry-related occurrence of 2010?
It's not so much a specific occurrence, but more of an on-going issue, and that would be the lack of stable funding for Washington State Ferries. This crisis has been plaguing us since the passage of Initiative 695 +/- 10 years ago, and it seems to be getting worse.

1) BC Ferries, I have made 55 individual/personal sailings. Seabus, I have done 6 round trips, so 12 sailings total. other ferries (WSF, Victoria Clipper, Coho etc.) I have taken 5 trips this year.
2) A round trip in late August aboard the Queen of New Westminster, for yet another bridge tour, making food in the galley, and watching the deckhands unload/load vehicles in the UCD, it was definately fun to watch.
3) After the 6pm sailing on the QNW, since there was no 8pm sailing, the crew had a potluck, and the crew stayed on the ship till 11:30pm doing nothing but sitting in the cafeteria for extra pay. It was strange being on a ship for 4 hours at night doing nothing with just the crew.
4) Three occurrences, the Queen of Nanaimo crashing into Village Bay, Mayne Island. The MV Quinsam crashing into the promenade in Nanaimo, just before the Nanaimo Harbour terminal. The Coastal Renaissance NOT sailing during the Christmas break.
5) BC Ferries FOI.
6) Using the Queen of Chilliwack on Route 17, and I say this because I was on her one day during a storm over a week ago, and it was not fun AT ALL.

[/li][li]How many times did you ride a ferry in 2010? (Note that this is individual ferry rides, so if you did a round trip on rte. 1, then that's TWO trips, not one)
I rode 21 trips. It's an odd number, because I'm on the Island presently;)
[/li][li]What was your favorite 2010 ferry ride, and why?
Favorite ride was probably April 30th evening... dinner on the Coastal Celebration, killer whales, sunset.
[/li][li]What was the weirdest thing you can remark about a 2010 ferry ride?
Probably the 30? minute docking proceedure at Langdale on the Coastal Renaissance at night.
[/li][li]What ferry-related occurrence surprised you most in 2010?
Fish and chips on the ferry! That was this year wasn't it?
[/li][li]What was your favorite 2010 ferry-related news event to follow?
Probably the stuff around the 50th anniversary of BC Ferries.
[/li][li]What was your least-favorite ferry-related occurrence of 2010? More fare-hikes.

By my count I have done 18 ferry trips this year which is no where near the number that some of you have done. If I added up the hours, however, I just might be competitive.
I did long trips on the NorEx, as well as the AMHS vessels Malaspina & Matanuska. I also did puddle jumps at the other end of the spectrum such as Vancouver's new Pacific Breeze seabus, and a round trip on the Usk reaction ferry. I also was able to sail aboard the I-Sky for my first trip on that particular newbie.
Between those extremes I was able to ride on and/or photograph many others. All in all, a good year.
A high light for me would be the Remembrance Day voyageur trip with my brother and meeting many of you, some for the first time.
I would regard the way in which BCFS went about celebrating their 50th as a 'low light' for the year. They really do seem to have a lack of pride in their pre-Hahnian history. More later!
Happy New Year to one & all!

How many times did you ride a ferry in 2010? (Note that this is individual ferry rides, so if you did a round trip on rte. 1, then that's TWO trips, not one) MV QUEEN OF COWICHAN - 2 times (HSB-DPB, DPB-HSB). MV QUEEN OF COQUITLAM - 2 times (HSB-LAN, LAN-HSB). SeaBus (Can't remember how many sailings, though). MV WENATCHEE - 2 times (SEA-BAI, BAI-SEA). MV PUYALLUP - 2 times (EDM-KIN, KIN-EDM). MV STEILACOOM II - 3 times (KHC-PTD, PTD-KHC, KHC-PTD). New MV CHETZEMOKA - 5 times (PTD-KHC, KHC-PTD, PTD-KHC, KHC-PTD, PTD-KHC). I-130 - A few times to Columbia Beach and back.
What was your favorite 2010 ferry ride, and why? My first ride aboard the new MV CHETZEMOKA on her 0630 sailing from Port Townsend to Keystone on November 15. To be a part of an historic occasion. Her first public sailing.
What was the weirdest thing you can remark about a 2010 ferry ride? Riding a ferry without cars. This happened on the 0800 sailing from Port Townsend to Keystone on November 14. WSF wanted to keep as many passenger spaces available aboard the little STEILACOOM II for the passengers going over to Keystone for the CHETZEMOKA's Inaugural Sailing from Keystone to Port Townsend.
What ferry-related occurrence surprised you most in 2010? Watching people trying to realize that there is galley service available again on the Port Townsend run. The new CHETZEMOKA has a galley. The STEILACOOM II did not. Not even a single vending machine. A drinking fountain was the only beverage service aboard that interim ferry on the Port Townsend run.
What was your favorite 2010 ferry-related news event to follow? The building of the new CHETZEMOKA, SALISH, and KENNEWICK.
What was your least-favorite ferry-related occurrence of 2010? Riding the BURRARD PACIFIC BREEZE and seeing waves crash onto the end windows. Not very good photo opportunities of Vancouver and the North Shore on that one. The BURRARD OTTER and BURRARD BEAVER are much better and are still the best in the SeaBus fleet.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!

1) 657. Oh, wait, each direction separately? 1,314. 2) The Edmonds-Kingston rides, because I wasn't working. 3) That day back in March when the wind was blowing out of the west all stinkin' day. 4) Drive motor failure on the Hyak. 5) The ongoing success of the Kwa-Di-Tabil class ferries in operation, thus squelching many of the naysayers. 6) Drive motor failure on the Hyak, clutch failure on the Sealth, broken drive shaft on the Sealth... I spent more days sitting on a broken-down boat (okay, catching up on administrative work and safety drills, but you know what I mean) this past year than in any other three years of my career combined.

During 2010, I took 61 ferry trips. My seasonal breakdown is: - Winter: 10 - Spring: 4 - Summer: 25 - Autumn: 22
This breakdown makes sense, because my work is seasonal (busy in spring, slower in autumn).
---------------
My favourite 2010 ferry ride was on July 8th when I took the Northern Adventure from Prince Rupert to Skidegate on a daylight trip. - favourite because it was my first trip to Haida Gwaii, and both the journey and destination were much-anticipated by me, and I remember the thrill of my first sight of land on Haida Gwaii (in the distance) from the middle of Hecate Strait. - the 7 hour trip (8 if you count the hour on-board before we left the berth) was perfect for exploring the ship and getting familiar with it. --------------
The weirdest thing? - the BC Ferries Vacation-Centre media wall, where BCFS supposedly purchased a batch of photos that included many items belonging to forum-members (including some by me) that someone had poached from our forum and passed-off as his/her own work.
-----------------
Surprise: - That something as simple as a forum "Ferry-Name-Game" could be so difficult to navigate. ;D
---------------
Favourite news item: The release by BCFS in late-October of the Performance Term #3 preliminary submission report and efficiencies report. - this ended lots of idle-speculation about issues and gave a good indication of what the company has planned for the next 4-year period. So it gave us real issues to discuss and ponder, for those of us who read the reports.
----------------
Least favourite occurrence: - Being told by a Tsawwassen terminal employee that photography at the terminal is not allowed, according to Transport Canada Regulations, and then not having time to pursue the matter with the terminal security manager (I had a ferry to catch, and I didn't have time to defend my rights).

- What was your least-favorite ferry-related occurrence of 2010?
- I rode a ferry about a dozen times this year. All on Route 3 commuting to or from my summer cottage on the Sunshine Coast at various times during the year. - My favorite ferry ride would have to be from Langdale to Horseshoe Bay on a beautiful July afternoon aboard the Queen of Coquitlam. Why? It was perfect weather to enjoy the sun deck, and there were only a few smokers, who were downwind of me. - Weirdest thing would have to be hearing the captain of the Queen of Coquitlam apologize for how loud the horn is. Then apologizing for having to sound it again to get some boater to get out the way. ;D - Most surprising was the Queen of Surrey deciding she was going to take most of the summer off. (Much to the chagrin of BC Ferries) ;D - My favourite news item would have to be the BC Ferries FOI requests. - Least favorite ferry-related occurrence of 2010 is: - The announcement of the planned retirement of the Mill Bay next spring. (I'm going to try and do a round trip aboard her in February.) Not specific to 2010: - How BCF seems content to let the Queen of Burnaby slowly fall apart from lack of proper maintenance.

I'll reawaken this thread and answer last year's questions again this year, and I invite others to do so too.
38 rides in total, up from last year's total of 34. As always, this doesn't include SeaBus or Granville Island Water Taxi trips)
Either my solo Gulf Islands trip last July or the Galiano forum trip. Maybe the trip on the MS Stavangerfjord in Norway, since it was such a different experience.
Ernie's Hour. Period. ;D
Either the QPR's sale and trip to Fiji, the Queen of Esquimalt's sad demise, or Commodore Hahn's hasty retreat from his high-chair... I was thinking of saying the Albion Ferries being sold, but that was likely to happen at some time. The odd part is the condition of sale, what with the owner having no plans for them and such.
The Queen of Lomaiviti's goings-on.
Either the Mill Bay's retirement or the Esquimalt's scrapping.
I think the Saanich will end up being scrapped, sadly, and maybe the Vancouver too. The Kalakala will either sink or have some last-second evasive action taken to have her restored. BC Ferries will do something about their recent hard landings, likely set some new protocols to follow, and maybe do a maintenance check on some vessels. I think there may be some talk about the replacements for the Burnaby and Nanaimo, and I wouldn't be surprised if some Northern Discovery discussion get thrown around too.
Happy New Year!
