:)I am afraid thats why so many cruise lines are omitting the Cdn. part of the inside passage, as they do the outside route rite up to dixon enterance, the fast & cheap way to Alaskan waters, then the heart of the cruise itenery rite up to hubbard glacer or beyond, boycottoing the need of cdn.pilots till back to Victoria then on to Seattle. :)mrdot.

Maybe ,but The main cruiselines operate out of both Seattle & Vancouver. Having the Vancouver Cruises using the Inside Passage and Seattle Cruises not ,creates a different product for them to sell. Vancouver offers a different porduct than Seattle for the most part the one way( open Jawed) cruises also offer Cruise tours generate a fair amount of revenue for the operators.
Could a cruiseship sail up Princess Royal Passage?
The Sapphire Princess was brought back to Vancouver for 2012 because Princess needed more capacity on it's primary Aaska Itinerary. the Voyage of the Glaciers.

When we did our Alaska Cruise in 2009 on the Norwegian Sun roundtrip out of Vancouver we sailed the Northern part of the Inside Passage then came out into the strait around Prince Rupert. Coming south we came right down the strait to about Milbank Sound and followed the BC Ferry route from there and then south from Port Hardy. We never went on the outside of Vancouver Island. Photos can be seen on my Facebook page under my Alaska Cruise Album. I remember a year before our cruise I saw the Norwegian Sun from the Nor Ad as we sailed to Prince Rupert. We actually had the Nor Ex and the smaller Holland America ship behind us on that Alaska Cruise as we sailed the Northern Inside Passage!

:)yes the onslaught of mega sized ships, often precludes using Princess Royal and Grenvelle channells as only the old size ships could enjoy these splendid waterways, and they save money going strait down the outside, at least to Johnstone strait. I wonder if it's not politically correct to call this all the Salish Sea? :)mrdot.

I don't know that 'political correctness' has anything to do with it, but for people who choose to use the term Salish Sea, I think it refers to the approximate homeland of the family of first nations generally refered to as the Coast Salish, which I believe extends from the north end of Georgia Strait, to the southern end of Puget Sound, and out to the end of Juan de Fuca. So, I guess Johnstone Strait would not count. Salish Sea, if applied to Georgia Strait, is at least a definite improvement over its first name, 'Gran Canal de Nuestra Señora del Rosario la Marinera'.

:)after last nite waxing prosaic on the old 'V' class washrooms, I guess I should be more careful on my nautical geography and the new nomenclature of the first nations! I am learning as I go, not bad for an old bugger, and I ask forgiveness for my limited 'E' skills on my nitely ramblings! the routeing of the Alaska cruises is very much in flux, as the cruise operaters look for savings on different iteneries, worldwide. :)mrdot.

Radiance will sail from Esquimalt on Thurday evening, between 20:00-22:00 is the plan. She will conduct some trials once clear of the harbour, will reset all the compasses out in the Royal Roads anchorage area, and then head over to Vancouver. The pod issue was completed last week, and several extended run up occured while along side, and all is well. All the interior work went well too, according to those down at the dry dock. She is ready for Alaska, and also her deployment to Australian waters this winter.

The work one at the Esquimalt gravng Dock seem to be interior related, Can Structural work ( such as adding balcanys be done there as well? this type of work seems to be done by European yards?

Indeed structural work can be done. In fact several of the Holland American vessels have had significant additions added to the top decks. Princess has had two major renovations done here too, with lots of major steel work undertaken both internally and externally. This fall Disney is headed in for a drydocking, as is Oosterdam. In January Sapphire Princess is in more reconstruction work lasting over a month.

According to Siitech, there's 4 ships in Seymour Narrows right now. Coral Princess and Norwegian Star enroute to Vancouver, Zuiderdam's destination is shown as "Triple Island" (though preumably heading to Victoria first), and the Oosterdam is also enroute to Victoria

The Zuiderdam is enroute to Vanccouver, than most likely on her trans - canal repositioning cruise to her Forida Homeport for the winter.

Statendam arrives Sunday night in Victoria at 9pm and departs at 11am Monday and the Oosterdam arrives also at 9pm and departs at 6am Monday. This is the first time I have seen ships here overnight as the Statendam is enroute from Vancouver to San Diego but the Oosterdam shows nothing of where is going or came from. Maybe a quick drydock? Anyone heard anything? The Oosterdam is also the last to leave Victoria in the begining of Oct.

The Oosterdam is due in Vancouver Tues OCT4. I think she is the final departure of the year. Until then she is in Esquimalt
