Vehicle ferry service at San Diego ended in 1969 when the bridge was opened. Tour vessels have been providing passenger-only runs between San Diego and Coronado these recent years.

Here's a neat video for you to look at. Found it on YouTube in a search.
I would be riding on the deck and in the small cabin aboard one of these on the run to and from Columbia Beach for at least ten years after this was done.
Watch in BIG SCREEN.
ENJOY!
... And, another one.

Here's a photo of the SAN DIEGO on a crossing to her namesake city from Coronado. Photo taken on 16 APR 1965 by LL Bonney. A closer look showing a classic transit bus on her car deck. The deckhands would be lowering the bar barrier any moment from when this photo was taken. As said before, this ferry had a few design similarities the Steel Electrics had. She was built at the same yard the ILLAHEE (LAKE TAHOE) and QUINAULT (REDWOOD EMPIRE) were built. I had a good privilege in seeing this ferry in person at Keystone in the early 1970s just after she came up here to Puget Sound. She had the same sounding whistles the KDT ferries do today!
