Here's a rare occurrence: - a Route-2 ship (the 'Cowichan) sailing between Keats Island and Bowen Island, on her 5:00pm sailing from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay; January 6, 2014.

I have been on the Cowichan once when she went that exact same way. It was during the summer I think though!

Here's a rare occurrence: - a Route-2 ship (the 'Cowichan) sailing between Keats Island and Bowen Island, on her 5:00pm sailing from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay; January 6, 2014. The departures page shows that she left Horseshoe Bay at 5, and arrived at Departure Bay at 6:46. Odd that the detour all around the north side of Bowen would only have added six minutes to the crossing.

The sailing I was on I thought took around 2 hours to sail around the island on route to Nanaimo!

I was on that sailing this evening. It was a moderate load on board so the Cowichan was able to go close to 22 knots! When the captain announced that we were taking the alternate routing, he gave us an ETA of 1850, so our arrival was ahead of schedule. Another thing to note is that while sailing between Keats and Bowen Islands, the ship switched to mode two briefly.

Did they opt to go a different way in order to familiarize themselves with alternate routes to use in case of bad weather? It seems pretty unique to go to the north of Bowen Island, especially if this detour requires the ship to switch to mode 2.

I posted the following comment on the WCFF Facebook page:
Does anyone know for sure exactly what conditions would justify a decision to use that route which requres increased travel time and a significantly higher fuel burn (and resulting costs)?

Not at all silly, but definitely rather strange, from the Bowen Island forum..
I can't seem to copy the exact thread, so scroll down to "BC Ferries are acting like dangerous clowns"

Not silly, but it might seem strange that the Q'Chilliwack is a 2-time winner of the BCF Engineering award. Maybe it's because the engineering dept did such a good job just keeping her running (a huge challenge) 20150807_093333 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr ...No winners since 2011. Maybe they forgot about it? - this plaque is on display in the NorEx
