This is a nice new thread. Good start, so far. July 17th, 1979: "Washington finds BC Ferry to be too Expensive"This might be moved to an appropriate thread. But, a thought has come across my mind on this headline of headaches in our WSF fleet here in 1979. It would have been better if WSF did get the SUNSHINE COAST QUEEN, despite the cost. She would have really helped us out on our routes during that trying year of 1979 when the Hood Canal Bridge went down. I would have placed her on the Fauntleroy to Southworth run, easing the strain of traffic the HYAK and YAKIMA had to endure on the Bremerton run as many travelers chose to drive around the south end of Hood Canal to get to their Olympic Peninsula destinations. Place the KLAHOWYA on the Fauntleroy to Vashon run. I would have then sent the NISQUALLY and QUINAULT north from Vashon to join the ILLAHEE at Columbia Beach. Then, send the KULSHAN to Tahlequah and the HIYU to a shuttle service between Vashon and Southworth. Finally, I would have sent the OLYMPIC up to Keystone to join the RHODODENDRON there (the OLY would have had to make fast at Union Wharf at Port Townsend as there were no extra slips there at that time). Improvements to four routes would have occurred here. The SCQ could have saved the first two letters of her name and be renamed SUQUAMISH. My thoughts of solutions to this whole mess we had here in 1979. It's all past tense by more than thirty years, though (before many of my forum mates here were born and placed on the face of this often hectic planet of ours!).
