I was wondering if this is taken near Langdale, and if so did Langdale ever operate without the added land into Howe Sound, or is this land just out of sight in this postcard? There is one aerial photo of Langdale from about the same time (1963) that is hiding in the BC Archives... it's kind of small, but you can see that they berthed the ships straight in and there haldn't been any fill-in work. www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/www2i/.visual/img_med/dir_155/i_50903.gifwow, great find, Mill Bay; thanks! After looking through that great archive numerous times I had yet to find that image; goes to show that you can always find something new if you look hard enough. - - - - Here's an aerial view of Saltery Bay, btw, from that great series " Pacific Yachting's Cruising Guide to British Columbia Vol. III - Sunshine Coast: Fraser Estuary and Vancouver to Jervis Inlet" Saltery Bay - Pender Queen at original Black Ball berth 2Found on Page 212 Photograph and volume by Bill Wolferstan

That horseshoe shaped concrete float is a fairly unique dock configuration. It looks like to me that the float holds the two wingwalls, so they can ride up and down with the dramatic tide changes in Jervis Inlet. Also notice that there is floating dolphins in place to ride up and down with the tides. That's because if they put in the fixed wingwall/dolphin type of dock (which is what you see at all of the other terminals), the walls would have to be pretty tall in order to accomadate the rubbing strake on the ship on a really low tide. Also probably cheaper in the longrun with keeping the "bumpers" out of the water so there's no underwater growth on them, and they won't have to replace them nearly as often as the ones that are partly submerged.
Saltery Bay however has the fixed wingwall/dolphin configuration, but am surprised they don't have a similar setup over there. They just require an extra long bridge for a gradual descent down to the ship during the low tides.

The surplus berth at Saltery Bay looks like it's falling apart a bit. Would that loose board affect a ships' docking there?

Why was the secondary berth in use?

I actually haven't the faintest idea of why. I'm guessing the Primary Berth must of had a minor malfunction that couldn't be fixed immediately.

I actually haven't the faintest idea of why. I'm guessing the Primary Berth must of had a minor malfunction that couldn't be fixed immediately. Occasional berth maintenance or structure replacement requires that the secondary berth be used. This occurs usually once every 2-3 years. This is similar to the Langdale case, where berth maintenance there would require that Berth 2 be used (with the interior ramps on the C-Class vessels).

The berths at Earls Cove. - seen September 18, 2012. Earls Cove is not a very photo-easy place. Trees and bushes in the way of photos of approaching ferries, and no access to the beach. A fence keeps you well back of the shore, on the far outer fringe of the picnic table area. One of the few long views The old bridge on berth-1

The nice thing about the fence at Earls is that it's not 10 feet high with barbed wire!
