Here are some pictures at Earls Cove from yesterday. I'm not really sure why, but Berth 1 was in use. All Photos are © CS16 Photography and may only be used with Permission from the Owner. There doesn't appear to be any maintenance around Berth 2. I'm sure we would have heard something there was. Except you didn't get off to get pictures of the actual ship in the berth . I'm sure they would have let you back on. Those crews should all know you by now. It would be interesting to see if they do that when we will be there on Sunday.

I was in the middle of Filming a Video Tour when this was taking place. I expected they were going to dock at Berth 2 like normal it was a surprise to me that we went into Berth 1. (As you'll see in the video whenever I get around to uploading it) So by the time I realized it was too late to Disembark.

Saltery Bay, seen from the west approach of an alternate-service ferry. - I'm on the Island Sky, arriving from Comox. Morning of March 9, 2014. It is interesting how the bay holds the low cloud. Also notice the light beacon on the hill, above the terminal parking lot. Or maybe it's just part of the hydro station.

Earls Cove on a busy summer afternoon. Here's one place where the service cuts can most definitely be felt. On the current schedule, there are no sailings between 12:55 and 17:35. That's a 4hr-40min gap in the middle of the day. Only on Saturdays, Sundays, and certain holidays do they have a mid afternoon sailing at 15:15. On the day we were there, that pinch could most certainly be felt, and there were some locals in line who were grumbling about it. We arrived in line a little after 15:00 and made the 17:35 sailing without any problems, but there were plenty of cars behind us which had to wait for the 19:40 departure. And, this was on a Wednesday. I can only imagine what Fridays must be like. Anyway, on with the pics: a very full marshaling area Thankfully, The Cove is there which is a good place for a snack and a cool place to sit while you wait for the ferry. On warm summer days like this one, sitting out on their patio under the protecting branches of the Weeping Willow tree was a much cooler place to be than in your car baking in the sun. Loading Island Sky at Earls Cove. Quite a few cars were left behind. Of course, there were a significant amount of oversize vehicles on this sailing - a healthy mix of commercial rigs and recreational vehicles I know cuts had to be made, but turning the mid afternoon 15:15 departure back to a daily sailing during the peak summer season seems like a prudent thing to do. It very much reminds me of Orcas. On the Fall and Spring schedules, there is a +/- 5hr gap in the afternoon every day except Sundays. But, in the summer, that mid afternoon sailing returns to being daily.

But, in the summer, that mid afternoon sailing returns to being daily. Seeing as how BC Ferries spent a small fortune rebuilding the docking facilities at both Westview and Little River, someone obviously forgot to get a memo to the 'schedule cutters' that during the peak of the Summer schedule, perhaps it was not a prudent time to cut sailings? BC Ferry marketing plans seem to entail: Raising fares, reducing sailings in peak periods, thus further alienating those travellers who ARE the statistics when it comes to reviewing route travel volumes. Downward spiral negative marketing 101?

And another random photo taken in the vehicle holding compound at Earls Cove, while we all waited for the I'Sky to arrive. This vehicle, I gather, normally can be found on Texada roads, and sometimes on the NIP... Apparently, this new colour scheme (livery) will be adopted by BC Ferries. The first ships to get this will be the three Polish vessels currently under construction. 15 March 2015 © WCK/JST by JST, on Flickr

Have to disagree on one point; I thought the sky during that time was more orange than brown, and with the diminished sunlight through the haze, I thought it was about as close as I'll ever get to experiencing mid day on Mars.
One other thing- it's Earls Cove, no apostrophe. Plural, referring to several batches of the resident Earl family.

Although if I'm not correct, it used to be "Earl's Cove", no? Such as Hudson's Bay, etc.

Although if I'm not correct, it used to be "Earl's Cove", no? Such as Hudson's Bay, etc. I think we had this discussion here before... Many Canadian place names used to have apostrophes in them. The apostrophes were however 'dropped' by an international decision made many decades ago. So in most cases a place like Earls Cove was presumably Earl's Cove. However, there is evidence that Earls Cove is likely an exception, being named for not just one Mr. Earl, but apparently a brother too. So, I guess that in might have been properly Earls' Cove. Neil, I believe, knows the history. Swartz Bay was apparently named fro a Mr. Swart, so the place was presumably Swart's Bay once upon a time. Somehow it became Swartz? One BC place that rejected the decree was the little northern town named Hudson's Hope. The town has doggedly kept the apostrophe in the name although the local post office (a federal government institution) goes by Hudson Hope ... apps.gov.bc.ca/pub/bcgnws/names/34710.html (recommended link) books.google.ca/books?id=AVQ5RZeAFCkC&pg=PR18&lpg=PR18&dq=apostrophes+in+place+names+canada&source=bl&ots=RuKKIQ1Tvs&sig=nzaKrPUNfg4a3VxUdrOPZu7YtFg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiOmf__2aPLAhWF74MKHXkzCRwQ6AEIMjAE#v=onepage&q=apostrophes%20in%20place%20names%20canada&f=falsecontrarian.ca/2015/01/23/the-criminal-elimination-of-apostrophes-in-place-names/

Earls Cove terminal has been selected for update within 25 years with the two berth terminal going down to a single double lane berth with two options for the holding lanes area layout. BC Ferries is also putting a bus bay for 1 large buses or two small community shuttle for future transit route. www.bcferriesprojects.ca/earlscove
