Photo set of the Carrier Princess including full interior. I always wondered what this ship looked like in the passenger area after such a short stint in the public ferry realm. Looks like a walk back in time to BC Ferries of the era. Understandably doesn't look like much was done over the years other than the removal of seating. www.facebook.com/groups/BCNauticalHistory/permalink/2163621233849231/Hopefully you don't need Facebook to see them.

Seaspan's Duke Point Terminal with Carrier Princess still tied up there, her future unknown. Arctic Hooper also tied up waiting for her next sailing.

Seaspan Reliant at speed, en route to Swartz Bay with afternoon sailing from Tilbury on the mainland - 6 September 2018

Seaspan Swift en route to Tilbury with a morning sailing from Swartz Bay. This was taken back on the 6th of September when smoke from forest fires all 'over hell's half acre' was still hampering viability, though not nearly as bad as it had been a week or two earlier.

Found (and saved) those Carrier Princess pix. I'm wondering how feasible it would be for BCF to buy her, add vehicle gallery decks and Coastalize her. Her exterior passenger decks along each side could be enclosed to provide more interior passenger space, with a new exterior passenger area added immediately aft of the cafeteria, for instance. Seems she would be well suited for relief duties on many routes, especially with her overheight capacity. I'd add the pix of her interior, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do that here.

Since you're wondering, I'll wonder why anyone would wonder about the possibilities of spending mega-bucks in renewing a worn-out 45 year old truck ferry.

They could probably get her for a song, and she's right here in local waters. Probably more reliable than the Polish boats have turned out to be.

I have always had a bit of a soft spot for the Carrier Princess. As truck/rail ferries go, its an attractive vessel. But at 45 years of age I think it does not have a future with BC Ferries. Maybe in Fiji?
An enlarged & updated version of the Carrier Princess design might make a good truck optimized 'night boat' vessel for Route 30, able to carry a limited number of passengers & their cars, plus a lot of commercial traffic. I think I have just described the Queen of Alberni in its original form.

How much did BCF dump into QoNW in 2008, when she was 44 years of age? Call me delusional, but I see a very unique and cost effective opportunity in Carrier Princess. I may be way off in my estimate, but I'd say for around $20 million, BCF could have a fully refurbished and modified vessel that would be a perfect supplementary/relief ship for all major routes. I wonder what her new name would be?

Before 'princessofvanfan' is thrown under the hull of an aging Seaspan freight ferry for a suggestion that 'maybe' BCFS could invest a few bucks in a top to bottom marine survey and possibly unearth a cost effective project to increase fleet capacity that is required in the short-term whilst we await the delivery of the slew of foreign built vessels a few years down the road. The 'Queen of New Westminster' was well passed her 'best before date' when BCFS poured millions of dollars into the incarnation we see today. The 'Q of NW' isn't the only vessel that received a 'second-coming' from BCFS as witnessed by the lolly spent on the 'Queen of Chilliwack', only to be peddled off less than 5 years later. Hopefully warranties on the 3 Coastal class vessels and the new Polish-built Salish trio have enabled BCFS to recover costs of working out all the bugs that have come to light since all those vessels entered service. To add an additional dash of unforeseen renovation dollars, we have the on-going saga of the 'Northern Sea Junk' which has cost BCFS millions of dollars to bring her up to T.C. specs and wiping out the entire re-introductory season of service to the B.C. mid-coast. The 'Carrier Princess' is laid up in our own back yard and with no overseas travel required BCFS could send a busload of inspectors to carry out at least a cursory inspection of this aging Seaspan dowager, who 'might' just be a diamond in the rough. I'm with 'princessofvanfan' on this one. It wouldn't cost a ton of money to have a look. BCFS has put millions down the scuppers for other dubious projects.

I do not wish to see this forum degrading to Facebook sort of comments such as this here. It is fair game to respond to the content of what another poster has written, but it is not okay to respond in the manner that you see here. We need to always show respect for the views of others. Edit: Mike pointed out to me (see below) that the original poster ( princessofvanfan) said "call me delusional" ... In light of that the response made by Mayne is not unreasonable. Just to be clear on the subject of BC Ferries acquiring the Carrier Princess, it is extremely unlikely, but it is nice to dream.

So it catches my attention when I see one poster saying that another poster is 'delusional'. In this case the first poster sort of opened the door, however ... I wish to keep this place from Facebook degradation.

For the record, I do, at times, tend to be somewhat delusional, especially when it comes to our local ferries. For instance, I've always wondered how feasible a Spirit class ship would be on the Campbell River - Quathiaski Cove route.

For the record, I do, at times, tend to be somewhat delusional, especially when it comes to our local ferries. For instance, I've always wondered how feasible a Spirit class ship would be on the Campbell River - Quathiaski Cove route. I get it. We all have areas of 'wondering' where we come up with notions that percolate in an active imagination. Some things you share, some things you don't. Some of those things, if you put them out for feedback... are going to get shot down, because they might be just really bizarre, and I'm not sure, that in the interest of niceness, everything should be entertained with polite decorum. There used to be room in this forum for a zinger in reply to something that was really off the wall. We can't do that anymore? The Carrier Princess is an old, worn out truck ferry that BC Ferries would be insane to consider. However... I'll admit, it positively makes sense to consider it, compared to having a Spirit at Quathiaski. 'princessofvanfan' deserves credit for recognizing the depth of his delusions.
