Captain Lloyd announced this morning that BC Ferries will be designating each end of The Queen of Surrey's outside decks as either smoking or non-smoking.
For The Surrey in particular, the number 2 end, which is the Horseshoe Bay end will be for smoking so the number 1 end will designated non-smoking. Apparently, this will apply to the passenger deck outside sections (Deck 5) as well as the sun deck and solarium (Deck 6).
She said that this is for all the C-Class vessels and in fact will be fleet-wide. She said she will be putting up signage today, so I'm guessing this will take effect immediately.

Is Captain Lloyd the "lady captain" (as opposed to a man captain, I guess) who has a crazy sense of humour that sometimes manifests itself in her PA-system addresses onboard the Surrey or Esquimalt?
I was on Esquimalt in May, and the lady on the PA-system was joking that "this wasn't a cruise ship."
sounds like a Sunshine Coast character.......

Is Captain Lloyd the "lady captain" (as opposed to a man captain, I guess)... As my mom might have jokingly questioned such a statement in the past - " Is it so inconveivable that there's more than one female captain on the route?" ...I was on Esquimalt in May, and the lady on the PA-system was joking that "this wasn't a cruise ship." sounds like a Sunshine Coast character....... That was a fun time aboard the Queen of Esquimalt with Karl, Scott, and myself (And others that I'm forgetting? There have been so many trips to Langdale over the past year that I can't seem to remember if anyone else was there that time) all attending.

It's the one and only Captain Janice Lloyd. I think she's still the only female captain in BC Ferries. Not only does she give us the ETA (with anticipatory log-tow delays) but she also loves to give traffic / road and weather reports too!

Wow, that's awesome!
Captain Lloyd was the Captain who I was keeping in touch with, via email, as she was going to give me work experience on board the Coquitlam (at the time) while I was still in High School. But now I'm under the impression that it all fell through, once the 'North went down. Really nice Lady though.

Thats Great! Everyone can breathe a little easier now that it's limited on the outside decks. Although it would be hard to light up with the wind blowing in your face on deck 6 at the no. 2 end headed to Horseshoe Bay

it's getting easier to breathe in a lot of places. Smoking isn't even allowed on Grouse except for on the decks of Altitudes bistro. At Cap College smoking is not allowed near doorways.

At Cap College smoking is not allowed near doorways. At your campus it isn't allowed, but it is at mine! That suprises me, as my campus acts like it's right beside the North Van campus, and has North Vancouver phone books at the pay phones, and we only get the Northshore News for local newspapers.

That's good. I look forward to the fresh air on the outside decks, but too often it's ruined by the stench of cigarettes.. or weed.

Here back before they banned smoking completely from WSF, they had smoking on the dock facing end of the vessel so that the stench went out for a small portion of the vessel instead of a huge chunk.

Last night on my way home, I searched for the signs our Captain spoke of but I couldn't see any yet.
She didn't say when this would all take effect, but I hope its soon. The solariums are the only sheltered spots on the sun deck and it would be really nice to have at least one end smoke-free.

I didn't see the signs up on the Queen of Surrey, but they're well displayed on The Coquitlam.

Good for them. It's nice to see some improvement... so is this becoming established on the other C class boats, or what?

Now this is a step forward, now to do an ALL OUT BAN

An all-out ban also makes the boats much cleaner... nobody grinding their butts out on the deck (and leaving them).

I agree with the above two postings on this thread.
Riding a WSF is much better these days. No second hand smoke to put up with. It was horrible to pass through the amidships lounges on the Steel-Electrics in the 1970s and 1980s as these were smoking areas.
Would you think that our voter-passed law applies to several minutes of the TSA - Active Pass routes as this crosses into the northwest corner of our state?

So you can't even smoke on the outside decks in Washington?
I'm glad there will finally be a solarium on board where you don't have to smell the stench of second hand smoke. However, I have my doubts that some smokers will care what the signs say.

Even though I do not smoke, I do not think "Smoking areas" or banning smoking is going to do any good. People will just ignore the signs anyway.
After all There is hardly a summer evening that you can walk around the Sundeck of a ferry without walking past a person "Toking one up", Let alone trying to enforce a Smoking policy.

However, I have my doubts that some smokers will care what the signs say. You can't smoke in any public buildings or any state owned property in Washington. You can't smoke in bars, restaurants, or bowling alleys, unless you're outside and 25 feet away from any entrance. This is the second year for the ban in the State and I've really not noticed too much of a problem on the boats. There are some stricken looks on the faces of some people on the Sidney run when I inform them that for the next 2.5 to 3 hours they won't be able to smoke, but most people handle it pretty well.

Customers still smoke in their vehicles in the holding lanes waiting to board but I agree with Evergreen. 99% of the smokers behave well onboard and smoking inside the terminal buildings has been prohibited for years.
I remember the days of smokiing the the cabins on the boats and now wonder how that was ever okay! A lot less garbage can fires now...
With the new law the tribal casinos have a booming business in their lounges on the weekends now. No smoking laws do not apply on tribal land.
