Something that's going to slowly become more rare as the very open deck boats become just open 'to the sky' deck boats, hanging out the side 'windows' over the water. It seems silly but I'm going to miss how close to the water the midship sag of the NIP can get you. Leaning out off the NIP by KC, on Flickr

Might be a bit premature to sound the alarm on this one... the new 'island class' boats may well have car deck portals that allow close to the waterline viewing. There's no question though, these boats, with their high bulwarks, are going to have really impaired sightlines from the car deck. We might be thankful for that in winter storms, but for most of the year, it will be a negative feature.

Mainland mountains viewed from aboard the Quinitsa en route from Crofton to Vesuvius, Saltspring Island. Those mountains must be on the Sunshine Coast, I think ... 22 December 2019

The power of the zoom lens! I have a photo of Mt. Baker and The Twins from West Vancouver that makes them look like they are only a few miles away. What was your focal length?

From earlier this month, heading to a shoot on Bowen Island aboard the Bowen Queen. I actually prefer her to the Capilano, but she doesn't have the vehicle space unfortunately.

Yes indeed, the power of zoom and clean, crisp air & good lighting. This was taken with my new 'birding' lens, a Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS, at its maximum reach. All the EXIF data is available if you view the photo on Flickr.

The trifecta! Was heading home Saturday morning on the Coastal Celebration, and while waiting to depart, the Seaspan Swift, Skeena Queen, and scruffy looking Mayne Queen were at berth.

Entering Snug Cove! I know... it's a sign of age when you grouse about how much things have changed... but now there are boats docked and anchored right out to the entrance to Snug Cove. Bowen was so much simpler when I started going there as a little kid, and the issue was, were you on the Cy Peck, or the Bainbridge? Probably, most of the 4000 or so people who live there year round will say it's better now.

Bowen was so much simpler when I started going there as a little kid, and the issue was, were you on the Cy Peck, or the Bainbridge? Probably, most of the 4000 or so people who live there year round will say it's better now. The population jumped 15% in five years, but not sure if ti is better. The general store is there, and a Whole Foods wannabe in The Ruddy Potato. There is a hardware/lumber chain store there. There is a gas station of sorts, but not in town. In summer, the island is underserved for ferry traffic and it is not unusual for it to be 30 to 45 minutes late. In Horseshoe Bay, the Cap is treated like the red-headed stepchild. Teh Cumberland is going to be the fill-in ship starting on the 12th, and the auxiliary car ramps are not going to be used, meaning capacity will be less, but they were always unhappy when the Bowen Queen was the relief ship. There are now two fire halls that I have seen, and they are building a community health centre. I recently shot a house that I could live in, but the rest of what is there does not interest me. In the summer of 2021 a car hit a power pole just past the school. Everything west of there was without power for more than twelve hours. All that being said, on a calm day, there is nothing better than a ride on the ferry!
