I checked out the site, and I like it. I read the Mission-Statement, which was pretty clear and well stated.
I agree that the website is an important tool to use in the political process of lobbying for a change in legislation.
Regardless of how anyone feels about this particular issue, I think people will agree that "Lobbying" is a reality in influencing any desired change in a Government decision, and websites are a great way to do that.
The "year of election" also makes change that much more possible....

But they don't list one advantage of being private.... How do we rely on an old & outdated ferry fleet??? Makes no sense.

I have no problem with the site - it has some very good comments and views. I have said in the past - I am concerned about the lack of neutral professional journalism in BC. They seem to report their personal views and not just report the facts - nor do any type of very basic simple research on a story - to either confirm or surport the data.
Someone mention about the ownership of the press / media - on this board - but still the general public - people of BC do deserve a lot better than they are getting - no matter who is in power.

Some might say that British Columbians deserve better, but not I. Sure, they would change into better informed voters, and end up making informed choices, if they *got* 'better'; and yes, they *should* get 'better,' in order to change them into better members of a demoracy; but *no*, I do *not* think they *deserve* better. voters in this province are the most uninformed, flip-floppyist, selfish (...etc...) voters that I've ever known. So yes, they should recieve better (un-biased media, honest polititians, etc...), but in no way do they *deserve* better (as a whole, that is; I'm not talking about you folks on this forum, I'm addressing those bad apples that spoil the bunch) Anyway... that's my last political comment for a while... I too would like to keep this forum about the ferries, not the politics.

People on these boards talk like the private BCF is responsible for new ships. You're wrong. They actually cancelled an oredr for 1, and set the planning stage for 4 Super Cs back by about 1 year. The midlfe's are also being done on BCF (Public) specs. Notice the similarities in many respects between the desing of the Cats and the new "West Coast" styling?

Hello, My name is Gregg, and I have been coming to your site for some time as lurker, but have decided to become a member. I live on Salt Spring Island and also work for BC Ferries on the Queen of Nanaimo, in the Catering Department. Now the important part, I am the lead spokesperson for the Save Our Ferries Campaign, and at this time working on the new Save Our Ferries web site. The site goes live on Jan 28th, with informative information concerning the Coastal Ferry Act and the impact it will have on future ferry service on the coast. What I would like from all of you is your permission to use your photos on this site, or your related sites like Sean's. Please send me an email with links and your permission. saveourferriescontact@gmail.com Look for our web site on Jan 28th. www.saveourferries.comThank you, Gregg =========== (moderator edit: to change thread title)

Just so you all know. I do not know Gregg or have any connection in anyway to Gregg. Looking at his post it does look like we have the same beliefs. My connection on the Queen of Nanaimo is somebody else. Seeing that we do have someone from aboard that vessel on the forum now I will be careful as to what I post from my connection as to not identify this person.

Gregg: a few questions about the S.O.F. (the ferry thing, not the Pattison grocery store.... ;D): - Is this an initiative of the BCFMWU, or just something closely related? - Is this new website hoped to be something to educate the voting-public of BC, so that the complaining-ferry-travelers will realise that the answer to their complaints is to vote in the next provincial election? - How often will the site be updated? What things on the site will be changing from time to time? ----------------- and a few "Gregg questions" for you: - what do you do on the Nanny? - what do you like about your Nanny job? - what are some memorable / unusual / fun moments in your career at BC Ferries? - what is your opinion on the various ferry-buff photographers (such as those who show their work on this forum)? Are security rules that might limit the style of ferry-photography needed, or just silly rules? - Are ferry crew aware of the existence of the "ferry nerd", and are we as misunderstood by the ferry-crew as we are by the rest of the planet? Gregg, good to have you signed up. ps: What ship do you think will be filling-in for the Nanny, after the Q-Tsawwassen is retired?

Gregg, welcome to the forum. I look forward to seeing your new website up and running. I'm sure we'll get lots of answers when your site is up, but if you have time...
What is the goal of the "campaign"?
Save Our Ferries has been around for a while; has something changed recently to breath life into it? I'd be interested to hear a little about the history of the "movement" or whatever it is.
And Flugel Horn has already sort of asked this but, who are you? Is this a union initiative? A community project? A political project? All of the above?
You'll find various opinions on this board.. some pro-private, some pro-public... probably most somewhere in the middle. We're glad you've joined on.
As for photographs, I'd recommend asking the photographers individually. All the photos should be "linked" back to personal photo collections or personal websites, so it shouldn't be too hard to find the owners of the materials on this forum. Thanks for asking though... we've found some people use our photos without permission.

I would have been on earlier, but I have been so busy getting the new site ready, it has been taking up all of my time.
Yes, Save Our Ferries was formed 5 years ago by the BCFMWU.
Oh yes...we have taken 5 years worth of information, including the Coastal Ferry Act, Service Contract, Prospectus, Bond Issues and other documents and put into an easy format for people to understand. Also we have some amazing surprises in store that we will be releasing over time.
We will be updating the site all of the time, we have lots of content that we need to added, once the lawyers give me the OK.
My base position is Catering Service Worker, but I have worked in a lot of different jobs in my career with BC Ferries. Including a year in management, I was part of the team that created Route 9a.
Look at my office, it changes every day. Beautiful sunrises, sunsets, whales and you get to meet a lot of nice and interesting people.
I'm going to write a book, I have a lot of funny, sad, scary and unusual moments to share one day.
I think your photos are great, but I do know that there will be changes with the new regulations under domestic ferry security that are coming soon. It will change how much access the public will have on the vessels.
Yes...there are a lot of ferry crew lurkers on this site, as a matter of fact I was talking about this site the other day at the Union's Provincial Executive meeting. No you are not misunderstood.
Our sister ship the Burnaby. Also the Tsawwassen will be around a little longer, she is off for a mini refit. Prior to her going off of the run on Route 9 we had a heli-logging operation looking at her to see if they could turn it into a logging camp. Which would be better then her being cut up in Turkey.
That BC Ferries becomes part of the Provincial Highway System and is funded as such.
Research, research and more research. We've been working behind the scenes and doing some consultation work but nothing in the limelight. Something has changed, the people that called me a fear monger on our first tour four years ago, started contacting me to ask how the Coastal Ferry Act works. So yes we will be going on tour again, this Spring.
All of the above. I live on Salt Spring Island. I work for BC Ferries, I'm also a Union member. My family and friends all use the ferries, it is there lifeline, they have invested in homes, and created businesses. They've invested there future here, and now they could lose all of that they have worked so hard for, and I have an avenue to try to stop it.
When I was four growing up in Vesuvius, and my mom would take my brother and I to the corner store, once in awhile a nice gentleman would be in there buying a newspaper. If he was in there when we came in he would buy us an ice cream, turns out that man was W.A.C Bennett. So now I'm trying to save his navy for buying me ice cream.
I hope this answers your questions and will try to come back as much as possible.
Gregg

Thanks, the site should be up late tomorrow afternoon. This is a picture taken from the aft of the Nanaimo as tug boats were pushing us into our berth. We had just spent the whole night heading from Long Harbour to Deas Dock, while waiting for the right tide conditions to head up the river. During that time we were part of the crew preparing the Nanaimo for its life extension refit, I had three catering with me, and Deas had about 30. By time we got to Deas, all the chairs, tables and carpeting were on the outside decks. All of the life jackets were on the cardeck on wooden pallets, the list goes on. I have more photo's somewhere, and will post them sometime. Gregg

No problem, I will try to confirm as many questions as possible. If I can't do it, I will have one of my team join the forum to answer your questions.
The Save Our Ferries team: Two Captains, an engineer, a Powell River Raging Granny and myself.

SAVE OUR FERRIES WEB SITE UPDATE
Due to a tech problem the launch has been delayed, so my on time performance is now shot. Will have it live as soon as possible, most likely tomorrow night.
